THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

It is a great pleasure to welcome you all to Sandown Park this afternoon for seven compelling races at what is our penultimate flat meeting of the season. Our first race is run in memory of Paul Ferguson, a well-respected member of the raceday veterinary team, who played an integral role in equine welfare at Sandown Park, as well as Epsom Downs and Kempton Park, and sadly passed away in April 2020. Paul is greatly missed by all those who knew and worked with him. Alongside the Paul Ferguson Memorial EBF Maiden Stakes we also have a novice contest for two-year-old fillies and five competitive handicaps for you to solve, the highlight of which is the Follow #Raceday On Instagram Handicap, a seven furlong Class 2 contest for horses with an official BHA rating of 0-100. We would like to thank 1Account, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing and Racing TV for their generous sponsorship of this afternoon's races. If you are looking for something to eat with friends and family, the Surrey Hall on the ground floor of our main grandstand provides a wide range of bars and food outlets to suit all tastes. We ask all attendees to read the advice later in this racecard, which explains what we can all do to follow the current government guidance and keep each other safe whilst on course. I wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck today and hope that you all have a wonderful time with us here at Sandown Park. PHIL WHITE London Region Director, The Jockey Club

Some well-bred newcomers on show but it could pay to side with POET. Roger Varian’s charge disappointed when only sixth at Salisbury last month but he’s worth another chance to confirm his debut promise here. Level Up could provide the main threat sporting first-time blinkers, while Taaqat, Infrared and Desert Team look likely sorts on paper and any market support may prove significant.

Paul was born in Portadown, Northern Ireland. He was the only and much-loved son of Margaret Ann (Nan) and Samuel Crozier Ferguson. Paul had a very special relationship with his 103-year-old mother, who still lives in Portadown, ringing her every day of his life. After being head boy and a keen sportsman at school in Portadown, he studied a veterinary degree at Glasgow University. Work in veterinary practices in Liverpool and Newmarket followed, before he spent seven years in Australia as a partner in Scone Equine Hospital. He returned as a partner in 1994 to Ridgeway Veterinary Hospital in Lambourn. In 1995 Paul married Jackie, with whom they have two children, Sam (20) and Katy (17). Paul loved to play tennis and was a big part of Ramsbury Tennis Club. He was one of the first Mamil’s (Middle Aged Man in Lycra)! For many years he would go off on travel adventures with his bike. On one of these trips, he fell in love with Brazil, returning regularly with his family of which they have very special and treasured memories. Many debates on world affairs etc, was had around the family supper table and at supper with friends. Paul was a doting Dad who adored his children. He spent may happy years on the side lines of football and rugby pitches, supporting Sam with such pride. Paul always enjoyed taking Katy to work with him, sharing with her their love of horses. Sam and Katy will always remember the family camping trips with other families, with the campfire, galley kitchen, bike rides with tagalongs and trailer rides. How everyone survived those trips was amazing! Paul was always the brilliant chef, who would even take a whisk for the Irish coffees! Paul was a highly regarded and respected equine practitioner both in the Lambourn area and as an integral member of the racecourse veterinary team at Sandown Park, Kempton, Epsom, and Royal Ascot. One of Paul’s many outstanding qualities was his public speaking. His turn of phrase, choice of content and wit always had everyone in stiches. Paul was witty, fun, hardworking, kind, honorable and generous. He is sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to meet him. We all treasure our precious memories.

The Gosden team have bagged this novice for three of the past four years and have another very strong candidate here in the shape of Frankel-filly NATASHA, who strolled home at Kempton three weeks ago and looks a highly promising recruit. River of Stars catches the eye on pedigree so Ralph Beckett’s debutante could be the one to chase her home, ahead of fellow-newcomer Maggie And Me.

PLAY SMARTER

SKY POWER is lightly raced for a 4-y-o and consequently has the potential to rate higher, so he receives the vote following a promising stable debut a fortnight ago. This slight drop in trip will suit Roscioli and he is feared, along with Lady Reset.
