THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our first ever Sky Bet Sunday Series raceday. We have seven fantastic races for you today in what is the second of an exciting three-fixture trial for British racing taking place across the course of the summer. We would like to thank our sponsors Sky Bet for their generous support of today’s card and welcome the team at ITV Racing who will be out and about across the course of today’s fixture looking to bring it to life for those who are not lucky enough to be with us on site today. We are delighted to be able to welcome spectators here without restrictions on capacity, but we would ask all attendees to read the advice later in this racecard, which explains what we can all do to follow the current government guidance whilst on course. Looking beyond today we have much to look forward to including another first for Sandown Park, Breeders' Day on Wednesday 15 September. This will be the first raceday that showcases the integral part that racehorse breeders play in the sport as a whole, and I would urge you to join us for what should be a fascinating and enjoyable day. We wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck today and hope that you have a wonderful time with us here at Sandown Park. PHIL WHITE London Region Director, The Jockey Club

Cases can be made for many, but preference is for David Elsworth’s GLENCORA, who went down by the narrowest of margins back on firmer ground at Leicester last month and is clearly still on a handy mark. Athmad proved at least as good as ever when scoring at Newcastle on reappearance so he’s feared most, ahead of Fairmac and David O’Meara’s French-recruit Tiger Touch.

80s DAY

FEATURING THE SEPTEMBER STAKES AFTER PARTY HOSTED BY MARTIN KEMP SATURDAY 4 SEPTEMBER TICKETS FROM £20

WHERE ARE THEY NOW Sire De Grugy

One of the standout two-mile chasers of the past decade, Sire De Grugy made his racecourse debut at Sandown Park before going onto win 17 of his 42 career starts, including the two Tingle Creek Chases and two Celebration Chases. Trainer Gary Moore originally purchased Sire De Grugy, but it was the friends of owner Steve Preston who clubbed together to fund the purchase as a present for Steve’s 50th birthday, with Gary retaining a share and Jamie Moore, Gary’s son, going on to partner Sire De Grugy in all but two of his races. When Sire De Grugy, now known just as Sire, retired from racing in 2017, it was Jamie’s wife Lucie who took over the reins. Following his retirement Sire De Grugy spent time in RoR’s flagship yard at the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket where hundreds of the museum’s visitors got to meet him. Nowadays, Lucie enjoys her morning rides on Sire and often finds herself heading up the gallops with the string, but it is Sire’s relationship with Jamie and Lucie’s young children that would surprise many. Lola, the eldest of the Moore children, can often be found riding the former stable star in the schooling ring and on the gallops. “Sire just seems to know that they are only little and he is so kind with all the children” shares Lucie. Sire De Grugy has enjoyed many outings since retirement, including crosscountry schooling, showjumping, and in January 2020 he returned to Sandown Park where he paraded in front of the racing crowd and lapped up the attention. Although Lucie says she has no grand plans, she would like to continue to compete him in the future. For now, he will continue to enjoy his Sunday hacks with Jamie and the children, adventures up the gallops and the occasional session in the school with Lola.

Most horses retiring from racing are eminently suitable for a further career in one of the sport horse disciplines or simply as a hack. In the fifteen years since RoR started staging competitions exclusively for former racehorses, annual participation has increased significantly. During non-Covid affected times, RoR annually stages 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The RoR Showing and Dressage Series are the most popular amongst RoR members, however, Eventing, Horseball and Polocrosse are all on the rise, highlighting the many different disciplines that RoR has to offer. To provide a comparison and some perspective, in 2019 more thoroughbreds took part in RoR dressage competitions than ran in steeplechases (4,148 vs 2,965). Most racehorse trainers have now established their own networks for finding second careers for horses in their care but owners wishing to learn more can ring the RoR helpline for advice on 01488 648998, there is also a directory of retrainers on the RoR website, as well as RoR’s own Source A Horse site, an online facility through which former racehorses can either be sold or loaned. PLAY SMARTER

The obvious one here is PRAIANO who should have more to offer on the back of his Leicester handicap debut success and can make light of a 3lb rise with the step up to 1 3/4m promising to suit. Vis A Vis shaped as if retaining ability on his reappearance and is very well treated on his form of a couple of years back so he’s feared most ahead of Ravens Ark and Glen Again.

PLAY SMARTER

STRAWBERRI did well to come from an unpromising spot to score at Beverley last month and Jack Mitchell should have her nicely positioned from stall 2, so she’s fancied to land the hat-trick at the likely expense of Golden Melody, who also arrives on the back of a double. Crema Inglesa could make her presence felt if the race pans out ideally.

GLOBAL SPIRIT is on an appealing mark and was finishing well when third to Give It Some Teddy at Redcar last time. The former is fancied to turn the tables and makes plenty of appeal in an open race, while Coase is another one to note following an encouraging fourth (caught wide) at Musselburgh earlier in the month.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
