WELCOME TO SALISBURY RACECOURSE Welcome to Salisbury for our September evening meeting. Last year we saw the soft ground specialist Trueshan win the featured ‘Persian Punch’ Conditions Stakes. Trueshan has since been successful in both a Group 2 and Group 1 race – the latter being the Goodwood Cup. We last raced eight days ago when 28-1 chance Romantic Time provided trainer William Stone with his first Group winner, in the Dick Poole Stakes. It was a cracking finish, and Hollie Doyle gave the horse a great ride to pass her rivals up the far side rail, in the last half furlong. Outbreak and Good American also looked two nice winning 2 year olds. In September 2019 a horse called Emaraaty Ana won a Conditions race at Salisbury over 6 furlongs. He was described by trainer Kevin Ryan, as ‘as good a horse I have ever trained’ after his win last Saturday in the Group 1 sprint at Haydock Park. The track gets a bit of a break now until the ‘season finale’ on Thursday 30th September, a day we traditionally see lots of 2 year olds. Thank you for joining us this evening and we look forward to seeing you later this month, or if not, next year. The fixture dates for 2022 will appear on our website just as soon as they are confirmed. Best wishes, Jeremy Martin Executive Director & Clerk of the Course

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance. OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S TIPS DID YOU KNOW: RICHARD HANNON SADDLED THE WINNER OF THE 7F NURSERY ON THIS CARD LAST YEAR AND THE LOCALLY-BASED TRAINER IS DOUBLE-HANDED IN THIS YEAR’S RENEWAL AT 4.45 COURTESY OF AMIGA MEU AND DARK TULIP. RACE ONE Island Bandit has to be respected following his victory at Newbury a month ago but he could be vulnerable under a 5lb penalty today. With that in mind, preference is for WIND YOUR NECK IN, who displayed plenty of promise on his debut over C&D earlier in the month. David Evans’ colt should only benefit from that experience and he may be hard to stop as a result. Internal Conflict is closely related to plenty of winners and any market support for him would have to be noted. WIN: WIND YOUR NECK IN; DANGER: ISLAND BANDIT RACE TWO MY LITTLE TIP met with plenty of trouble in running when finishing third on his nursery debut at Epsom late last month and he makes plenty of appeal off a 1lb lower mark today. Amiga Meu got off the mark at Wolverhampton a couple of weeks ago and she may have more to offer, while Codify and Lucrosa are others who merit a place on the shortlist. WIN: MY LITTLE TIP; DANGER: AMIGA MEU RACE THREE BANANA has shown ability in competitive races this year and she put in a career-best effort on her return from a break when finishing third at Chester three weeks ago. An opening mark of 82 appears to be fair and she may have more to offer today. Rosa Mystica has to be of some interest following her narrow defeat last time and Amber Dew should not be underestimated. WIN: BANANA; DANGER: ROSA MYSTICA RACE FOUR Clive Cox won this race in 2019 and looks to repeat the dose today with Pinball Wizard, who made all the running to score by a length at Kempton last month. However, he does have an added 6lb from the handicapper and may struggle to hold off CAPLA DREAM. A winner on his first start for new connections in a better race at Nottingham in May, that was his first outing in five months and he is entitled to improve. Aviary drops back in trip and could surprise a few. WIN: CAPLA DREAM; DANGER: PINBALL WIZARD RACE FIVE It is hard to oppose BERKSHIRE ROCCO with the 2020 St Leger second only seen the once this season when a staying-on second over a mile and a half in Doha in February. He is the class act here but his long absence has to be of some concern, with Quickthorn perhaps his biggest danger. A winner twice this season, he was only beaten a head at York in a competitive handicap last month and he can mount a strong challenge, leaving Goodwood handicap winner Calling The Wind the likeliest candidate for third place. WIN: BERKSHIRE ROCCO; DANGER: QUICKTHORN RACE SIX Tres Speciale has finished second on both her starts, including at odds-on at Carlisle last month when beaten over three lengths and may do better if she settles here, but it seems unlikely she can improve past EIKONIX. A debut second was followed by an easy win at Wolverhampton, despite being hampered shortly after the start, and with an added furlong and a half here, he may improve again for his in-form stable. Sayf Al Dawla is another to consider now upped in trip and returning to the turf with every chance of further improvement. WIN: EIKONIX; DANGER: SAYF AL DAWLA TOTEPLACEPOT SUGGESTIONS: (1) 1 & 7 (2) 3 & 7 (3) 1 & 4 (4) 2 & 3 (5) 2 & 3 (6) 3 & 7

A N DY H A R DWI C K M EM O R IA L NURSERY HANDICAP

When Andy was a young lad his father helped him place his first bet on the Grand National then after that the rest was history, Andy was hooked. Racing was in the family’s blood, Andy’s grandfather was a jockey and his father used to groom horses. Whatever Andy did in his life, he put 100% into it. He was a dedicated family man to his wife Sally and his two daughters Kelly and Sammy and he was a huge follower of horse racing, with Salisbury being his local racecourse. He loved days out at the races with his friends and had a great knowledge of the horse racing industry which often gave him the upper hand with the ‘old enemy’ - the bookmakers! When he wasn’t thinking about horses he spent most of his adult life involved in local football and dedicated much of his time as Secretary of Bemerton Heath Harlequins. He did this for over 30 years firstly involved with the Youth section of the club, and then with the Adult teams. He had a wicked sense of humour and, as the photo shows, always had a grin on his face. He sadly lost his battle with his short illness and was taken from us all far too soon.
