WELCOME TO SALISBURY RACECOURSE Welcome to Salisbury for one of the feature days of our entire season. It is a raceday we all greatly look forward to. Lovely horses, excellent sponsors, enthusiastic and knowledgeable racegoers, and leading industry people. Our thanks to Irish Thoroughbred Marketing for sponsoring the Group 3 race, and to our other sponsors and supporters – the European Breeders’ Fund, Jeanette McCreery, European Bloodstock News, Byerley Stud and Molson Coors. Their contribution to the prize money is greatly appreciated. This meeting took place behind closed doors, in wet conditions last year. At the time of writing this message, the forecast looks dry, which is good news. The best horse we saw that day in 2020 was Alcohol Free who has subsequently won three Group 1 races. We race just twice more – next Friday and on Thursday 30th – a raceday we can sometimes see as many as fifty or more two-year-olds! Enjoy the racing and we hope to welcome you again before too long. Best wishes, Jeremy Martin Executive Director & Clerk of the Course STATISTICS FOR SALISBURY AFTER 13 RACE MEETINGS IN 2021:

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance. OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S TIPS DID YOU KNOW: William Haggas boasts a respectable 25% strike rate (+£7.04 level stakes profit) with his juvenile runners at Salisbury. The Newmarket handler saddles Persist (2.00) and Perfect News (2.35) today. RACE ONE POINT LOUISE has been holding her form well this season and could have more to offer in this grade, now dropping back in distance and receiving the weight-for-age allowance. Rectory Road is likely be the chief threat after his latest victory at Bath, while Winnetka needs to prove his stamina at this distance. Any market support for the returning Piselli Molli could be worth noting. WIN: POINT LOUISE DANGER: RECTORY ROAD RACE TWO Point Lynas sets the standard in this contest with plenty of experience under his belt. However, a chance is taken on OUTBREAK, who created a strong impression when posting a second-placed effort at Chelmsford on his racecourse debut last month. Old Harrovian, Surac and Thermometer look to be the pick of the newcomers in this line-up, all of whom hail from powerful stables. WIN: OUTBREAK DANGER: POINT LYNAS RACE THREE PERSIST has an attractive pedigree and shaped with plenty of promise on her racecourse debut when posting a fourth-placed effort at Newbury. The selection finished behind Hamseh on that occasion but gets the vote to reverse the form here. Aunt Bethany hinted at ability at Yarmouth and could take a step forward in this field. Australian Angel, Equal Share and Good American are newcomers to keep an eye on. WIN: PERSIST DANGER: HAMSEH RACE FOUR PEARL GLORY might have only won by a head at this venue on her latest start but she did beat a colt that had run well in a Group 2, with the pair drawing six and a half lengths clear of the rest. She gets the vote, while Dubai Jewel’s win at Newbury could be strong form and she looks the type capable of performing well at this level. Intelligentsia was impressive when winning on debut and she may also be involved. WIN: PEARL GLORY DANGER: DUBAI JEWEL RACE FIVE Quickstep Lady bounced back to form at Windsor last time, edging out a subsequent easy winner, while Crazy Luck was beaten a neck by the progressive Mitrosonfire at Ascot and she is likely to give another good account. However, IMPROVISED has shown that she has plenty of ability and there may be more to come, so she looks the one to beat. WIN: IMPROVISED DANGER: CRAZY LUCK RACE SIX NEENEE’S CHOICE showed all of his battling qualities when winning a strong-looking race at Newbury last time and he might improve again for this step up in trip. He looks a leading contender, while Zuhair may also appreciate stretching out in distance and has shown that he has plenty of ability, so he also looks a big player. Fierospeed has run well in two Racing League contests recently and could have his say. WIN: NEENEE’S CHOICE DANGER: ZUHAIR toteplacepot suggestions: (1) 10 & 1 (2) 4 & 5 (3) 9 & 6 (4) 7 & 3 (5) 3 & 6 (6) 4 & 3

THE BYERLEY STUD RACING EXCELLENCE APPRENTICE SERIES AT SALISBURY The five race Racing Excellence Apprentice Series at Salisbury is generously sponsored by Byerley Stud. It is specifically designed to assist the education and training of new and inexperienced jockeys. Additional points are awarded by the jockeys’ coach for presentation, professionalism, course familiarisation walk and riding ability. Initially set up by The British Racing School as ‘Support for Young Jockeys’ in 2006, the BHA rebranded the scheme in 2010 as ‘Racing Excellence’. In February 2014 The British Racing School took over the management of Racing Excellence and The JCP. The latter gives all Apprentices and Conditionals the opportunity to have a coach. All coaches who are all ex Jockeys can be on hand to help with fitness, riding technique, nutrition and race reviews. A coach will attend every Racing Excellence race to conduct the pre-race course walk and then will also debrief afterwards.

ob McCreery was twice Champion Amateur rider with many notable winners on the flat and over jumps. He later became a highly successful breeder and owner and it is appropriate that the Bob McCreery Memorial Stakes is run today at Salisbury exactly four years after Anna Nerium, sporting his colours, burst through the field to land the Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes under Tom Marquand.

McCreery soon became highly influential in the bloodstock world with the formation of the Injured Jockeys Fund, the European Breeders’ Fund (with the help of Peter Willett, Vincent O’Brien and Alec Head) and was a key Chairman of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. Always approachable and friendly, he helped and encouraged many young people looking for a career in the racing and breeding industries. He developed the Moreton Paddox Stud in Warwickshire before moving to Stowell Hill in

Somerset, not far from Wincanton racecourse.

His early winners

as a breeder included High Top (2,000 Guineas), Old Vic (Irish Derby & French Derby), Anshan, Electric and Gale Force Ten, who all became successful stallions.

Princess Elizabeth Stakes, Epsom). All these have been trained by Richard Hannon Snr & Jnr, leading trainers at Salisbury. The EBF has raised many millions to boost prize money and Goodwood have featured the Peter Willett Stakes for several years.

TODAY’S HEADLINES RACING REVIEW

POWER JUST PERFECT IN PRIX MORNY

Overbury Stud’s first-crop sire Ardad celebrated his first Gr.1 victory yesterday when Perfect Power blasted home to triumph in the Prix Morny at Deauville. Richard Fahey’s charge became the first Group winner by his sire when winning the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, having broken his maiden earlier in June on his second start. Racing over 1200m yesterday, the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes winner Quick Suzy (Profitable) was first to show, racing on the stands-side rail as Solotov (Invincible Spirit) came to take over at the head of affairs on the far side of the pack. As Khunan (Twilight Son) threw down his challenge with Have A Good Day (Adaay), Asymmetric (Showcasing) and Trident (Wootton Bassett) swooped to lead, but Perfect Power stormed through the pack in the final 200m under Christophe Soumillon to win by a length and a quarter. Trident took second, half a length in front of the Gr.2 Richmond Stakes winner Asymmetric.

Race Summary: The most appealing of these is NEENEE’S CHOICE, who took another step forward when making a winning handicap bow over a mile at Newbury and he probably has more to offer now faced with a stiffer test. Fierospeed is starting to look a shade exposed, but he has acquitted himself well in Class 3 handicaps the last twice and gets the nod ahead of Lady Reset for forecast purposes.
