Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Bank Holiday Family Day at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse. We are renowned for our fantastic family days and it’s great to be able to stage our first in two years this afternoon. We have lots of free fun for kids in the Course Enclosure with face painting, inflatables, Cub Karts, Barrel Train, National Festival Circus, Punch N Judy and Magic show with Professor Dan and Sand and Slime modelling with Angels and Butterflies. On the track we have a great afternoon of racing in store, featuring the British Stallion Studs EBF Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy at 3.05, a 6f Listed contest with £42,500 in prize money up for grabs. We are excited not only to see who adds their name to the roll of honour this afternoon but also how the careers of all of the contenders progress. We welcome ‘Wooden Spoon’ back for their 26th annual charity raceday! The charity is dedicated to helping disadvantaged children through sport and we are delighted to support them. Thanks also to our sponsors this afternoon Castlehouse Construction, NE-Bet, Titanium Racing and Examworks UK. Their support is very much appreciated. It’s amazing how quickly time flies by, it seems like just yesterday we were planning for our first meeting of the season ‘Behind Closed Doors’ and after today we have just two fixtures remaining. We race again tomorrow with the first race at 1pm and then we have a wait until the 25th September for our season finale. Wishing you a great afternoon and we hope to see you again soon. JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director

TODAY’S TIPS RACE

1

SUNDAY JUSTICE went into plenty of notebooks after an eye-catching debut at Beverley earlier in the month, where he was caught for room before keeping on all the way to the line. With the step up in trip expected to suit, he can break his maiden tag at the expense of Thirsk winner Maybe Even Never, who carries a 7lb penalty. Bollin May could also be in the mix, along with newcomer Summer Secrets.

WIN: SUNDAY JUSTICE

RACE

2

A chance is taken on MAC AILEY, whose only career success came over this trip back in October 2019. Currently only 1lb higher, Tim Easterby’s gelding has been performing respectably of late and he went close when last tried over 10 furlongs on good ground. Renbawi may pose the biggest threat, while Thriller’s Moon is also respected. Former course-and-distance winner Wildcitydiva completes the shortlist.

WIN: MAC AILEY

RACE

3

4

5

6 7

DANGER: GARDEN OASIS

The Chris Wall-trained MANGO BOY bumped into a couple of useful types when finishing third at Kempton on his latest start and, with the step up in trip potentially set to suit, he may prove good enough to get off the mark. Pride Of Priory also finished behind some above-average performers at the same track on his latest outing and is feared, while National Treasure has experience on her side and is also worthy of respect.

WIN: MANGO BOY

RACE

DANGER: ATOMIC LADY

KETTLE HILL was beaten a head into second by Garden Oasis over this trip at York when last seen in July, but the unexposed four-year-old can reverse that form today on 4lb better terms. The aforementioned Garden Oasis has subsequently won over C&D and he should not be underestimated, while Challet also makes the shortlist having won over this track and trip a week ago.

WIN: KETTLE HILL

RACE

DANGER: HOWZER BLACK

In an open contest marginal preference is for the unbeaten TAJ ALRIYADH, who arrives here on the back of a victory in a conditions event over C&D a couple of weeks ago. Atomic Lady has to be respected following her narrow defeat in a valuable sales race at York 11 days ago, while Hellomydarlin and Mot And The Messer are the pick of the remainder.

WIN: TAJ ALRIYADH

RACE

DANGER: RENBAWI

MYRISTICA was an impressive winner over course and distance two starts ago and the progressive filly only found one too good on her most recent start. The daughter of Harzand will have to improve again to win here, but she may well have more to offer. Howzer Black is an obvious threat having gone down narrowly at Hamilton recently. Others to note are Man Of The Night and Dream With Me.

WIN: MYRISTICA

RACE

DANGER: MAYBE EVEN NEVER

DANGER: PRIDE OF PRIORY

MY BROTHER MIKE won a similar event at Nottingham 17 days ago under the same rider, where he comfortably beat a few of these, and looks ready to follow up off only a 3lb higher mark. Whitwell has taken a hike for finishing a close second at Thirsk last time and is a guaranteed stayer over this trip, but the main danger looks to be Licit, who showed more signs of life at Carlisle last time and can go well on only her second run for Tim Easterby.

WIN: MY BROTHER MIKE

DANGER: LICIT

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The Wooden Spoon Society began on the rugby field in 1983 when England finished bottom of what was then the Five Nations Championship. Since then “Spoon” – as it is now affectionately known – has grown into one of the UK and Ireland’s fastest growing charities dedicated to helping children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially by using sport to improve lives while harnessing the spirit and values of rugby. The charity is one of the largest funders of respite and medical treatment centres, sensory enhancement therapeutic facilities, specialist playgrounds, sports activity areas, and community based programmes in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In partnership with the rugby community, both Union and League, we involve some of rugby’s top sporting role models who provide support and help raise awareness of its invaluable work The charity comprises of 40 regional volunteer committees, a national HQ team, and over 10,000 members who wear its distinctive tie, representing the colours of the 4 Home Nations. Regional committees undertake local fundraising activities with the money raised being spent on projects within their local community. This year, the Yorkshire Committee proudly celebrates 25 years since its foundation in May 1992, during which it has provided £2,151,583 of funding to 94 projects within the region. Today, Yorkshire Spoon celebrates the 26th Anniversary Race Day at Ripon, and we thank Spoon member James and Jane Hutchinson of the Ripon Racecourse executive and the racecourse staff for their continued support. We particularly thank Richard Lumley, Chairman of Castlehouse Construction Ltd and Mike Cutler, Group Managing Director ExamWorks UK for their generous sponsorship of two named races on the card.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. lb

Not so competitive as the numbers suggest, and recent Musselburgh runner-up RENBAWI is taken to go one better here off the same mark and open his account. Horse

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This one mile contest for two-year-olds is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 3lb for colts and geldings and 8st 12lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Pattern success. st

Horse

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. lb

This one mile, one furlong and 170 yards contest for three-years-old and upwards is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.
