Q&A
Managing Director of World After Sport
Martin Underwood
Who am I and what do I do?
I am the Managing Director of World After Sport, a business focused on helping sports professionals prepare for the day when they retire from their sport. The majority of sports people, including jockeys, do not earn the salaries people assume, so they need to plan, prepare and transition seamlessly so they can continue to support themselves and their families. We help put that structure in place, and help to do this, and help create opportunities to develop or enhance skills for the future.
Earliest Racing Memory?
When I was too young to go to the football with my dad and brother, and my mum was shopping, my Grandad came over to babysit. We’d sit and watch Grandstand together and when there was horse racing my Grandad placed 2 piles of 10ps on the coffee table. We both chose a horse and the horse that finished in front of the other won the money. I’m sure I won most races!!! Such great memories with my late Grandad –who was such a great guy.
Favourite Racing Memory?
I’m not sure, My stag do was at Cheltenham and also had a fabulous day at Royal Ascot on a Saturday… Funniest was at Cheltenham..Last race, we all put our bets on after a debate about choices. There was a horse called quick and the consensus
was “any horse called this never is” and it was 50/1. Needless to say it won by about 20 lengths!!!
Favourite Horse and Why (past or present)?
More because it was my first Grand National winner, but Party Politics – I was 16 and read the Daily Telegraph pull out and picked him out….mainly as it was an election year, first time I’d used a bookies too, so was obviously delighted when he won and my old man went to get the winnings for me. I’ve won the National a few times, including Tiger Roll which I watched at Leicester Tigers Rugby so was joined by a number of other winners who chose by name. Pure luck..
Favourite Course?
Wow – That’s tough. I often say to people Horse Racing isn’t top of my list but then say I’ve been to Ascot, Cheltenham, Gosforth, Leicester, Lingfield, Nottingham, Warwick, Weatherby and maybe more..But I like them all…it’s the atmosphere, even at small venues I enjoy.
Why I love racing?
As mentioned I love the atmosphere, the buzz and also the people watching. The other thing that makes the hairs on the back of my neck is the sound when the horses race passed you…then ground shakes and the thunder sound is staggering
What is the World After Sport?
World After Sport has 2 current arms that we focus on. The main one is the transition business, helping sports professionals prepare for a career after sport. We help produce a personal development plan and encourage and help achieve the goals and objectives, and offer coaching support. The second arm, using the contacts we have in sport, is to help sports clubs and businesses who would like a sports professional attend their event and offer talks to entertain or educate respectively. We are happy to host events from start to finish as well if that helps, esp with sports clubs looking t raise much needed money for equipment and facilities.

If you could have a dinner party with 3 ‘celebrity’s’ (living or deceased)
who would you invite and why? Nelson Mandela, Stuart Pearce and Martin Johnson – 3 people have been amazing leaders and inspirations for me and would be able help with DIY – Mandela to think through intelligently, Pearce to headbutt the nails in and Martin to reach those heights I can’t reach!
