TIM HARDIE

Rarely without a hearty laugh or warm greeting, Tim Hardie epitomised the passion that he brought to his beloved Perth. So it was so sad to hear in January of the passing of this larger-than-life character, a member for 32 years, who was elected to the committee in 2001. A jeweller of great renown in the city, Tim looked after the racecourse’s collection of trophies and, through his wealth of racing connections and knowledge, he successfully persuaded a number of high-profile trainers to send their horses to Perth. He was always as proud as punch on this very day when the novices’ chase he sponsored was staged and smart prospects such as Flying Angel, Ballyandy, Double Ross and Wholestone are just a few of the names on the roll of honour. It is no coincidence that the aforementioned were all trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, a great personal friend, who for many years, took up residence with Tim during his many successful raids to Scone Palace Park. As an owner, Tim was one of the partnership involved with Sue Bradburne’s 1999 Grand National runner-up Blue Charm and his grey and pink silks were carried by successful jumpers such as Ask Me Later, Willie Sparkle and Sonsie Mo with the Fife handler. It is no understatement to say that he squeezed plenty of fun and games into his seven and a half decades and you always left his company with a smile. Tim Hardie may be gone but he will never be forgotten, especially during racedays at Britain’s most northernly venue. By Gordon Brown

O’CONNELL STREET was better than the result when runner-up at this course on handicap debut and should benefit from the drop back in trip, so he’s a confident choice to go one better at the likely expense of Makka Pakka, who also arrives on the back of a positive initial outing in this sphere. It’s hard to look beyond HEAD ON, who made it 2-2 over fences with a fair bit in hand in a conditionals’ event at Worcester 10 days ago.
