2021-2022

PAUL FERGUSON’S

Paul Ferguson looks ahead to today’s racing After last year’s enforced hiatus, it is fantastic to be back on course at Perth for day one of their two-day Glorious Finale fixture. Whilst this meeting brings the curtain down on another fine season at the track, it also ushers in the new National Hunt season ‘proper’ with the opening contest the first in a series of races sponsored by Weatherbys, in the name of Jumpers To Follow 2021-2022. Eight horses face the starter, five of which are trained in Ireland and the other trio based with Scottish handlers. Of those three Scottishtrained runners, arguably the most interesting is Irish Point-to-Point graduate, Clearly Crazy. A five-year-old by Libertarian, she ran well when runner-up when last seen and should be suited by the shorter trip, on what is her first start for local trainer Lucinda Russell. The Irish challenge is headed by a duo trained by Northern-based trainer Stuart Crawford. Although a shade disappointing when last seen at this track in

PYM

July, Ailie Rose had earlier shaped with promise at Limerick and might have more to offer, whilst the John McConnell-trained She Is A Contender needs to settle better than she has done in her opening couple of runs under Rules. She had looked useful when winning a maiden Point as a four-year-old. Having had three mares to choose from at entry stage, it could be significant that Russell relies on Clearly Crazy, who could keep the prize close to home. As for the season ahead, Russell looks to be responsible for one of the brightest prospects in the North, Ahoy Senor, who won the Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree, on just his second start over hurdles. He is set to go novice chasing and should make up into a high-class novice.

GET OUT THE GATE

Weatherbys also proudly sponsors the day’s feature, the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk David Whitaker Handicap Chase, in which five horses go to post.

Among the quintet is last year’s winner and course specialist Amalfi Doug, whilst the aforementioned John McConnell is represented by both Go Another One and Roi de Dubai. The former is a smart hurdler (won a Listed novice hurdle at this track in April 2019) but has yet to hit the same heights over fences, whereas his older stable-mate is two from four as a chaser and arrives here on the back of a wide-margin win at Cartmel. The Sandy Thomson-trained Get Out The Gate is another three-time course winner and the field is completed by Pym, who once sported the silks of owner Mrs Patricia Pugh, made famous by the recently-retired Altior. Now in the care of trainer Oliver Greenall, the eight-year-old reverts to chasing and it is worth remembering that it is less than a year since he defeated If The Cap Fits in the Future Stars Intermediate Chase at Sandown. Elsewhere on the card, it is nice to see the classy Clondaw Caitlin returning to action under top-weight in the Injured Jockeys Fund Jack Berry House Handicap Hurdle. The six-year-old mare remains very lightly-raced and finished a sound second on her most recent start at Newcastle. Good luck and enjoy the action, Paul Ferguson.

JOHN & SUSAN BRADBURNE

Johnny and Susan Bradburne were well-known and colourful figures figures in Scottish jump racing over many years, combining for a successful operation which trained dozens of winners at Scotland’s four national hunt tracks, many partnered by Mr J Bradburne himself, who continued race-riding until the age of 49, retiring at Perth where he also served as a local steward. Over the years, the pair both rode in races, the odd time against each other, perhaps most famously at Ayr on Valentine’s Day, no less, in 1987 when Johnny was dramatically knocked out of the saddle when his horse was badly impeded by his wife’s mount; if only there was a recording of the conversation on the journey home. A string of quality runners were prepared by Susan at their stables, developed at Johnny’s family home close to Cupar, Fife notably Blue Charm which provided a high profile moment when, at 25-1, leading for much of the way before being passed only very late on, and finishing second, in the 1999 Grand National at Aintree. In a sport that relishes nothing more than a good pedigree the ‘Braddies’ were delighted to pass on their enthusiasm for racing and skills of horsemanship to their children, Mark, who carved out an accomplished career as a professional jump jockey, and Lorna, a polished amateur rider who as Lorna Fowler now trains racehorses and runs a stud farm in County Meath, Ireland. And it doesn’t stop there: Mark’s children, Thomas and Katie, and Lorna’s, Rosie and Johnny, give every indication of keeping up the family tradition. Written by Cornelius Lysaght

Perth Pearl David Whitaker David first joined The Perth Hunt in 1978, continuing a family association with the racecourse through his wife, Fiona. She is the daughter of the late Col. Dewhurst, a previous chairman of the Executive Committee, and David followed in that role in 1996. David was committed to the progress and development of the course. The initial development was to build the Dewhurst Stand in 1986 in order to start creating modern facilities for members and race-goers. That was followed in 2006 with the building of the Nelson Stand, the cost of which appeared frightening initially, but it was soon obvious that the facility would generate its own income to take care of the financing costs which David had predicted. The final project overseen by David was to see the new stable block completed in late 2015 enabling the transfer of horses by road from the old stables a couple of miles or so away to come to an end. This project ran in tandem with The Lodge at Perth Racecourse coming on stream in early 2016 and David was able to know that this facility had come to fruition before he died. David was a founder member of Scottish Racing Marketing Ltd, a company set up by the five Scottish racecourses in 2000 to identify and pursue matters of common interest to Ayr, Hamilton, Kelso, Musselburgh and Perth. This company still looks after areas of joint matters of importance to all the courses and he is remembered with great fondness by the chairmen of the four other courses outside Perth. We shall not forget him.

HORSE WELFARE Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider. People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course. This does not reflect the severity of the injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

PLAY SMARTER

SILK OR SCARLET looked a different horse in cheekpieces when scoring comfortably over C&D back in May and a 7lb rise may not stop him if showing up from a break in similar form. The Electrician will be a threat if reproducing the level he showed when second at Ayr when last seen in the spring, while Celtic Tara has been off for a while but needs keeping an eye on in the market now handicapping.
