Summer Jumping

2023 saw the lowest number of races run in the summer period over the last five years - a 12.64% race reduction since 2018. The number of runners increased by 4.25% from 2022 which is returning to 2019 levels.

The overall success rate for 2023 is higher than the 2019 and 2022 figures. The largest increase was seen in August.

The failure rate for 2023 is considerably lower than the 2022 figure, again the largest decline can be attributed to August, even with more races run in 2023 compared to 2021 and 2022.

A higher proportion of races were run in soft/heavy ground in 2023 compared to recent years and less races were run on good to firm ground.

The Met Office have confirmed July 2023 as the wettest since 2009 and the sixth wettest on record. August also saw two named storms occur, Antoni and Betty, bringing unseasonably wet and windy weather

Total prize money in 2023 decreased compared to 2022 due to less races, but as you would expect, the average prize money per race has increased and is notably 23.70% higher than 2019.

The number of Summer jump abandonments in 2023 was close to average. In 2023 these were caused by periods of heavy rainfall and racecourse ground-work renovations. Attendance at summer jumps fixtures in 2023 was 4.33% higher than in 2022. 2023 was nicknamed the summer of chaos with frequent threats of protests. Train strikes also caused further disruption for racegoers.

The overall average attendance per fixture figure has increased significantly since the covid affected years and was 11.38% lower than the overall 2019 average.

We wish all owners and trainers with a runner here today the best of luck.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

GOLDEN PATH was picked up for a reasonable sum by current connections and began to justify it with an impressive hurdling debut to score over C&D. He should be up to defying a penalty at the possible expense of Kalkaroo, who showed something to work on at Market Rasen. Final Entry is a full brother to a winning hurdler and is worthy of interest on his first go in this sphere.
