ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR PENULTIMATE FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON. Whilst we have a crowd on racedays, it has not been possible to have the crowd we would like. We still have restrictions with protocols for our elite athletes the Jockeys with 2m distancing and the Marquee together with the Weighing Room complex. In addition, we have no Course Enclosure for the remainder of the season due to accommodating NHS. Lastly it has not been possible to service all our bars and outlets due to unavailable staff some with Covid related issues or other reasons. Today we have two Memorial races, to remember two very special people who have passed away in recent years. Brendon Soper and Aubrey Loze both spent many years as Directors of the racecourse. We welcome both Julie Soper and Christine Loze together with their families. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: The British Stallion Studs EBF, Christine Loze and her family, William Hill, Julie Soper and her family. Other main sponsors include Sky Sports Racing, The Racing Partnership and Attheraces. Our final fixture is on Thursday 21 October with the first race at 1.38pm. Gates will open at 11.38pm. Entry to the Racecourse will remain pre-booked only with no tickets available on the gate. Tickets can be bought from our ticketing system on our website www.newtonabbotracing.com Our fixture list for 2022 is available within this racecard. I hope you have a very enjoyable day with us. Best wishes PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR

LAST MEETING REVIEW |MONDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER 2021

Racing continued at Newton Abbot on a wet Monday afternoon.

1

Our opening race, the Talk Tidy Marketing Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Handicap Hurdle was won by outsider Arty Campbell, giving trainer Bernard Llewellyn a welcome winner following their trip from Caerphilly in Wales. Held up right at the back of the pack by Robert Williams, Arty Campbell travelled well in the hands of his jockey, taking up the lead on the home turn and being ridden into the last by his jockey. He looked to have the race sown up but Kieren Buckley galvanised his mount, favourite Masteradream for Neil Mulholland, and he put up a mighty late charge. Had it not been for a mistake at the last he may have gunned down the leader, but Arty Campbell did enough to see out the race by half a length. A competitive six runner novice hurdle came next, with a smart field going to post in the Jan And Jeff Silver Wedding Anniversary Novices’ Hurdle. Evan Williams’ Loved Out and Paul Nicholls’ Wise Glory were sent off joint 11/8 favourites under Adam Wedge and Harry Cobden respectively, but it was the David Pipe-trained Flammarion who came out on top under Tom Scudamore. A recent acquisition from David O’Meara’s flat yard, Flammarion has a spin on the flat at Ffos Las under Hollie Doyle the time before

and finished second but went one better over the longer trip and with a few obstacles in his way. Scudamore kept his mount 5 in contention throughout and made his challenge three hurdles from the finish, with the pair taking up the lead two out. Scudamore got to work on his mount and kept him going, and when extended he ran on well to win nicely by two- and three-quarter lengths in a promising performance. Favourite Fifrelet wasn’t hard pressed to open his account in the Bryan And Ilva Wescott Memorial Maiden Hurdle, with Ian Williams’ charge winning easily under five-pound claimer Liam Harrison. Despite jumping out to his left a few times and making a few mistakes, notably at the second

last, he won comfortably by nine lengths. The Watch Sky Sports Racing In HD Handicap Hurdle was a great race on paper and didn’t disappoint in reality. The Harry Whittington-trained Docpickedme was sent off strong favourite under Daryl Jacob but could only manage a distant third, with Paul Nicholls’ Montys Medoc winning under Harry Cobden. Cobden had an easy ride in truth, with Montys Medoc jumping fluently and travelling well within himself throughout the race and had to only be shaken up to take the lead two hurdles from the finish. He stayed on well to see off the challenge of Mr Tambourine Man under Tom Scudamore, who did well to finish second from the front and be a length and three quarters behind the winner. Favourite backers were in clover again when Espinator bolted up in the Racing Partnership Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, running out an easy winner under Kevin Brogan for Adrian Wintle. He travelled very strongly throughout and justified his short price, with Brogan continuing his fine form in the saddle. He travelled easily to two out and sealed the race with a fine jump there, settling the

contest in a manner of strides. A mistake at the last did nothing to stop him and he bolted up from Master Tradesman in second and Alkademon back in third. A four-runner novice chase, the Sky Sports Racing On Virgin 535 Novices’ Chase, was full of drama in the closing stages. Shang Tang came out on top under Tom Bellamy for Emma Lavelle after a battle with the Nicky Henderson-trained Hooper under Nico de Boinville. Shang Tang won the race with his smart jumping and easy manner, while Hooper was hampered by rival Ruthless Article four out and never found his rhythm again. Hooper went clear three out but carried himself left throughout the closing stages and threw all chance away when hanging badly left on the run in. Mick Pastor was a fine winner of the closing race, the Follow @attheraces On Twitter Handicap Chase, giving Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden a double on the day. In the colours of J P McManus, Mick Pastor could have been called the winner at halfway, and never looked like being caught as he cruised through the race. Dino Velvet was no match for the winner back in second an Mick Pastor looks a horse to follow in handicap company on this ground.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

AUBREY LOZE

Aubrey joined the Board of the racecourse in September 2000 invited by the then Chairman Anthony Mildmay-White. Aubrey’s vast business experience was invaluable at Board meetings and on racedays. He became Chairman on 20 February 2003. During his tenure as Chairman we worked very closely. He was always interested in learning all aspects of the racing industry and often came to London with me to get a feel of the difficulties that go with being a small independent racecourse. During his time as Chairman there were a number of achievements we made that enhanced the reputation and standards of the racecourse. We bought and then re-sold the Teignbridge Indoor Bowls Centre, built a new stable lads’ canteen, created our own catering business, built a new stables complex and negotiated the sale of land for the hotel and restaurant. It was an enormous pleasure to know Aubrey and work closely with him during his time as a director but more so as the Chairman was a great experience. He was a great mentor who was always happy to pass on his wise counsel but more importantly he was a great friend. He is certainly a huge loss to Newton Abbot Racecourse but equally to everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing him. Patrick Masterson Managing Director

BRENDON SOPER Brendon Soper was appointed as the Financial Director of Newton Abbot Races in September 1996. He retired from the board on the 1 June 2016. Brendon’s vast financial knowledge and experience was always a great help to me and invaluable to the Board. It is, and continues to be, extremely difficult to run a small independent racecourse. Brendon was a huge racing fan and spent time away from Newton Abbot as the raceday manager of Exeter and Taunton. He was a great supporter of the South West Racing Club. Brendon attended most club trips to other courses both in Ireland and England and always came to me after these trips with some tips and ideas that could be useful for Newton Abbot. I will personally miss his warm smile and the banter we used to have. A great man who is a huge loss not only to all of us at Newton Abbot but equally to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

TFRHHIII BHADECLARED RUNNERS 12 2020: ONEMOREFORTHEROAD 5 11 0 Bryony Frost 14-1 (Neil King) 13 ran Hood worn by No. 4. Running for the first time since Gelding No. 2, 3, 7, 9, 10. Stewards Note: MEECHLANDS MAGIC: Following its run on 10/5/2021 it was reported that the horse ran too freely early-on. HERE HARE HERE: Following its run on 9/5/2021 it was reported that the horse needs longer to strengthen up. Probable S.P.’s: 9-2 Here Hare Here (FR), Lallygag (GER), 15-2 Theoldfellashorse (GB), Iberio (GER), 8-1 Gorcombe Moonshine (GB), 9-1 Could Talkaboutit (IRE), 10-1 The Changing Man (IRE), 28-1 Meechlands Magic (GB), 33-1 Danzini (IRE), 40-1 High Court Justice (GB), Royal Myrrh (GB), Parisian Princesse (GB)

A clutch of newcomers from good yards means the market should reveal plenty here, but LALLYGAG, a brother to the very smart chaser Lalor, is taken to make a winning start for Paul Nicholls having gone with some promise on his debut for Kayley Woollacott PLAY SMARTER in the spring. Fergal O’Brien’s Theoldfellashorse appeals most of the debutants closely followed by Iberio for Philip Hobbs. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.LALLYGAG (GER) 2.THEOLDFELLASHORSE 3.IBERIO (GER)
