ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU BACK TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR FIFTEENTH FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON. Our ground staff together with a couple of contractors, have been working on the track since the meeting of 26 May in very tough conditions. The course has been mowed and baled. Scarification and decompaction relief and then spring harrowed with further scarification and finally direct drilled with 100% rye grass. All credit to the team for their outstanding work. The track looks a real picture ready for a good days racing today. I would like to thank all the Owners with us today continuing to keep their horses in training through this pandemic and beyond. Whilst we have a crowd on racedays, it has not been possible to have the crowd we would like. We still have some restrictions with protocols for our elite athletes the Jockeys with 2m distancing and the Marquee together with the Weighing room complex. In addition we have no course enclosure for the remainder of the season with the NHS. Lastly it has not been possible to service all our bars and outlets due to unavailable staff some Covid related issues or other reasons. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: The Racing Partnership (TRP), Attheraces, Sky Sports Racing and PKF Francis Clark. On behalf of all our staff I would like to send our very best wishes to Wayne Hockley on his birthday today. He is one of our permanent staff who works on the track. Have a great day Wayne. Our next fixture is on Friday 17 September with the first race at 13.53pm. Gates will open at 11.53pm. Entry to the Racecourse will remain ticket only with no tickets available on the gate. Tickets can be bought from our ticketing system on our website www.newtonabbotracing.com Our fixture list for 2022 will be available in the next racecard. Best wishes PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR

LAST MEETING REVIEW |TUESDAY 31ST AUGUST 2021

1

We ended August with our final evening meeting of the 2021 season and the seven-race card saw a thrilling finish to the feature handicap chase with only a head separating the first-two home. Delight Of Dubai has been a consistent performer for Noel Williams since sent chasing and he gained a second course success over the bigger obstacles in the Talk Tidy Marketing Handicap, although he had to work hard in the closing stages to see off the challenge of the runner-up. The seven-year-old had got off the mark over fences over two miles and five furlongs here in June so was stepping up in distance this time around, but he looked to be enjoying the extra distance when going three lengths clear under Tom O’Brien ahead of the final fence. However, her stamina was tested after she hit the last and the Colin Tizzard-trained Sizing Cusimano rallied to try and try and reel her in, but Delight Of Dubai dug deep when challenged to just deny the closing runner-up in the end.

4

In the closing newtonabbotracing.com Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, Eglantine Du Seuil made 5 it two wins from five races over fences for Paul Nicholls having previously been a smart hurdler for Willie Mullins. A winner of the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival back in 2019, the seven-year-old looks a nice type to be going chasing with and she jumped well for Harry Cobden in the first-time cheekpieces to see off Rebecca Curtis’ Ruthless Article by two and a half lengths. She could be one to follow going forward for her leading trainer with more to come over fences based on her previous hurdles form.

3 - STATE CROWN

The Class 3 Racing Partnership TRP Handicap Hurdle earlier on the card saw State Crown run out an impressive ten-length winner for the trainer and jockey combination of Evan Williams and Adam Wedge. The four-year-old had run below-par at Aintree when last seen in June but on his previous start he had won over course and distance and returned to Newton Abbot he bounced back to form. As he had done previously at the course, the son of New Approach set out from the front and then he was not for catching, having far too much for his rivals to win in good style. The opening NewtonAbbotRace On Twitter Maiden Hurdle had also seen an impressive winner as Beholden made most in the hands of Gavin Sheehan to get off the mark by a wide-margin twelve lengths. Trained by Jamie Snowden, the five-year-old had been placed on his previous three starts over hurdles, including over course and distance last time, so he was gaining a well-deserved success this time around.

came to the fore in the Happy 80th Birthday Bob Robinson Handicap Chase as Cheltenham De Vaige made it a fourth win over course and distance for Fergal O’Brien. The nine-year-old had not shown much form so far this year but bounced back here under Mr Tom Broughton as he kept on strongly to win by three-quarters of a length. Elsewhere on the card, Aye Aye Charlie recorded his first win since switching yards to Christian Williams as he made all under Jack Tudor for a nine and a half-length success in the Newton Abbot Racecourse On Facebook Handicap Hurdle. Later in the evening, there was victory for the Milton Harris-trained Sergeant in the Visit attheraces.com Handicap Hurdle as the four-year-old showed improved form running on quick ground for the first time over hurdles. He travelled strongly for Mitchell Bastyan before being delivered to lead ahead of the second-last obstacle and he then went on to score easily by two lengths.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

TFRHHHHI BHA82 2020: MIDNIGHT MAGIC 8 11 12 Jack Tudor 9-2 (David Pipe) 11 ran DECLARED RUNNERS 8 Blinkers worn first time by No. 2. Tongue Strap worn by No. 6, 7, 8. This is likely to be run at a strong tempo and DOUBLE COURT may well pick up the pieces late on. The 10-y-o has done most of his racing at around 2 1/2m, but was doing his best work at the finish when second at Worcester last time, shaping as though this PLAY SMARTER stiffer test could be just what the doctor ordered. Dido’s record here reads 212 and he is feared most ahead of No Cruise Yet and Achy Breaky Heart. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.DOUBLE COURT (IRE) 2.DIDO 3.NO CRUISE YET
