ON BEHALF OF THE DIRECTORS, SHAREHOLDERS AND STAFF, I AM DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU TO NEWTON ABBOT FOR OUR THIRTEENTH FIXTURE OF THE 2021 SEASON.

Our ground staff together with a couple of contractors, have been working on the track since the meeting of 26 May in very tough conditions. The course has been mowed and baled. Scarification and decompaction relief and then spring harrowed with further scarification and finally direct drilled with 100% rye grass. All credit to the team for their outstanding work. The track looks a real picture ready for a good days racing today. I would like to thank all the Owners with us today continuing to keep their horses in training through this pandemic and beyond. Whilst we have a crowd on racedays, it has not been possible to have the crowd we deserve. We still have some restrictions with protocols for our elite athletes the Jockeys with 2m distancing and the Marquee together with the Weighing room complex. In addition we have no course enclosure for the remainder of the season due to assisting the NHS. Lastly, it has not been possible to service all our bars and outlets due to unavailable staff, some with Covid related issues or other reasons. I would like to thank all our sponsors today: First race: The Jon Hearne Memorial Hurdle sponsored by Jon’s Family and Friends. Second Race : The Tzora Treble Up Handicap Hurdle sponsored by The Tzora Partners. Third Race: Paul Sherriff Happy Retirement Chase sponsored by Shauna Sherriff. Fourth Race: The Detroit Red Treble Up Hurdle Race sponsored by Martin and Rachel Hill. Fifth Race: The Easily Pleased What a Legend Steeple Chase sponsored by Claire Harding and Roger Oliver. Sixth Race: David Luscombe Memorial Steeple Chase sponsored by Hilda Luscombe. Seventh Race: The Watcombe Heights Treble Up Steeple Chase sponsored by Martin Hill Breeding for Racing. Once again, I thank all the Owners that have supported Newton Abbot during the pandemic. Our next fixture is on Tuesday Evening 31 August with the first race at 16.26pm. Best wishes PATRICK MASTERSON MANAGING DIRECTOR

HOW TO PLACE A BET

HOW DO ‘THE ODDS’ WORK?

If you’re new to horseracing and are daunted by the prospect of placing your first bet, then our guide to betting will help you. WHERE CAN I BET? There are two places to place a bet: the Tote and the Bookmakers. The Tote: Usually placed throughout the course, theTote doesn’t offer a fixed priced for a bet.The money is pooled together and shared between those with a winning ticket. The Bookmakers: Usually located in the front of the ground, Bookmakers display their odds and offer a fixed price. The amount you can win is printed on your betting slip.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I BET? If you are new to betting, start off with smaller bets until you get used to it. Betting between £2 and £5 means that you can enjoy the thrill of betting, without denting your wallet.

The odds are the probability of a particular horse winning the race. Odds against: Horses with less than 50% probability of winning. Displayed as 2/1, 5/1 Odds on: Horses with more than 50% probability of winning. Displayed as 10/11, 4/6 The tote will show its probable prices in decimal format. The Bookmaker’s prices reflect a price for your winnings. ‘Evens’: means your horse has a 50% probability of winning. It looks like 1/1 and you get your stake plus the same amount in winnings back.

HOW TO PICK A WINNER Usually dependent on observation, knowledge and luck, there are some ways of determining the best horse to bet on. The Favourite: The horse judged most likely to win the race, and on which the most money has been bet. Offered at the shortest odds. The Form: The race card will print details of all the runners and riders for each race. The 6 figures at the end of a horse’s name, such as 420131, shows where that horse was placed in its last six races. So, it would have been 4th, 2nd, not placed, 1st, 3rd and 1st. The Jockey: With 500 professional jockeys, some well-known such as Richard Johnson, many bet on their favourite jockeys to win. The Trainers: Trainers are as important as the jockeys. The ‘Racing Post’ will help give more background about the trainers. The Odds: The shorter the odds, the more chance there is of winning. Tips and Tipsters: ‘Abbot Whispers’ will give inside tips and information about the runners and riders. The Going: The state of the ground the horses will be racing on. Dependent on the weather, the going can be heavy, soft, good to soft, good, good to firm or firm.

newtonabbotracing.com

HOW DO I PLACE MY BET? At theTote: Simply say how much, the type of bet and the horse’s number, for example ‘£5 to win on number 4 in the 4.25 race’.The amount you’ll win will only be known after the race has finished but screens will give an approximated amount. At the Bookmakers: You’ll receive a fixed bet which will tell you how much you’ll receive if you win. Again, say how much, the type of bet and the horse’s number. Not all bookmakers accept Each Way bets, so ask before placing. Keep your betting slip safe, and collect from the same bookmakers you made your bet with.

HOW DO I FOLLOW THE RACE? Five minutes before the race starts, find somewhere with a good view and settle in for the race. Look out for your horse; the horse’s number and the jockey’s colours will be printed in the race card.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I WIN? Take your betting slip up to the Tote/ Bookmakers and collect your winnings. They’ll check your betting slip and pay out the amount you’re due to receive. You can also go the Winner’s Enclosure and watch your winner being presented with their prize.

HORSE WELFARE AT NEWTON ABBOT At all race meetings held at Newton Abbot Racecourse there are three specially qualified Veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. One vet will attend the start and follow the race in his/her vehicle and attend fallen, lame or pulled up horses. Another vet will observe the finishing straight from the small stand beside the last fence in the final straight. They will immediately attend fallen or lame horses at this last fence or flight of hurdles. If directed, they may be required to attend other incidents in the final straight. The third vet will be available to complete the treatment of urgent cases within the stable yard. This third vet will, if not otherwise occupied, observe the race from the bank at the outside of the track by the ‘in-line’ steward’s box and be available to attend horses finishing the race. In the event of two vets being occupied treating an emergency case, the SVS will follow horses. Whenever possible, one of the Veterinary Surgeons should be present in the Unsaddling Enclosure after each race.

USE OF SCREENS It is now standard practise for screens to be erected around any horses when receiving veterinary attention. This does not reflect the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not therefore assume the worst if you see the screen erected around a fallen horse.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LAST MEETING REVIEW |MONDAY 26TH JULY 2021 3 - SCRAPPY JACK

2

1

It was a real varied day at our last meeting with a whole variety of trainers, jockeys and owners making their way into the winner’s enclosure. It was a good day for favourites and punters will have gone home happy with the biggest price winner being only 5/1! Ultimate Getaway was an emphatic winner of the first by a runaway 23 lengths. Liam Harrison travelled so effortlessly into the race and ended up winning more like a 1/10 shot rather than almost 2/1! His winning distance was helped by the fall of favourite, Ship of the Fen but Ultimate Getaway was already the winner when left alone at the last. The other market principle was Van Meegeren who also unseated but his untimely exit was at the first rather than the last. If was a chaotic opener and thankfully all horses were just fine after the race. Our second race, The St Austell Brewery Novice Handicap Hurdle, was a an extremely open looking affair. Of

3

the nine runners, five were single figure odds, which gives some indication of the openness of this race. It 4 was the John Flint trained Gibraltarian who came home the victor after being hampered by a faller three hurdles from home. He stuck on quite nicely and eventual second placed Vanderbilt had no answer once passed. It wouldn’t be a Newton Abbott raceday without Paul Nichols getting his customary winner. Young claimer Ben Bromley made use of his 7lb claim to win on Chez Hans and overturn Alexandra Dunn’s favourite Thahab

newtonabbotracing.com

Ifraj. Quite a tactical little affair, Chez Hans kept on nicely and the handicapper looks to have his work cut out to stop him from winning again next time out. He made it four wins on the bounce and the two have built up an excellent partnership. Fvourite Manor Park obliged in the next and continued the theme of run-away winners. Patrick Cowley and Manor Park are another example of horse and jockey being on the same level and the two now have three wins when partnering up. Patrick knew he had a good horse underneath him and kept it nice and simple by tracking Ayr Of Elegance before kicking for victory two hurdles from home. Stanley Stanley gave Paul Nicholls his second winner on the card but this time it was retained jockey Harry Cobden doing the steering. This race was our closest of the evening and Outlaw Jack put up a valiant effort back in second. Kevin Brogan became the

hard luck story of the afternoon and made it two seconds on the card. Stanley Stanley and Outlaw Jack could be two to follow for the future as they pulled well clear of the third, Thirsty Farmer. Our final race of the evening was the Talk Tidy Marketing Open Maiden National Hunt Flat Race and saw five runners go to post. The market had it as a three way go between, Maxcel, Don’t Stop Now and Waterbreak. The latter was the first to bow out and after leading for most of the way tailed of tamely at the three-furlong marker to finish an eventual 25 lengths behind the other two. Don’t Stop Now and Maxcel settled down to fight it out and fight it out they did with Maxcel just getting the better of the argument. Don’t Stop Now did try to battle back in the final half furlong but you could tell Maxcel was always doing enough to hold him.

JON HEARNE

Today’s 2.55 race is very significantly named The Jon Hearne Memorial. Jon was a local boy, born and bred in the Newton Abbot area and lately living in Teignmouth with his wife Lynne and family. Jon was a talented sportsman in his younger days, particularly football. Indeed only a serious injury in his teens prevented him from pursuing a career as a professional footballer, with Tottenham Hotspur showing interest. One of Jon’s greatest passions was horse racing, a pastime which was introduced to him by his mum. On retirement from Lloyds Bank he worked with local bookmaker Joey Oliver attending meetings across the South of England. Jon became involved with racehorse ownership and owned a horse called Bally Conn in partnership with local trainer Martin Hill. Bally Conn won four races in one season and gave Jon and connections some fantastic days out. He became involved with the Martin Hill yard by running syndicates with his usual good humour and efficiency. Jon was a dedicated family man and a great and loyal friend to many, all of whom miss him immensely.

MARTIN HILL’S TREBLE You will see that today’s card features three races in the names of TZORA, DETROIT RED, and WATCOMBE HEIGHTS each with a TREBLE UP suffix. On the 20th July 2014 Martin Hill’s small yard based only 6 miles from the track sent four of it’s 10 strong team to their local and favourite track, the three above plus the admirably consistent and exciting EASILY PLEASED who ran a decent fourth in his race and is also marked with his own race today. Firstly Detroit Red went to post in the feature handicap hurdle and though in great recent form was not expected to overcome hot favourite lttirad owned by powerful arab connections and a facile winner at Newtons previous meeting. However Detroit Red and Hadden Frost had not read the script and having tracked the leaders lead approaching the last for a cosy victory, interestingly lttirad went on to win 5 of his next 7 starts, strong form indeed. Next to line up was Tzora another flag bearer for the Hill team over hurdles and a multiple winner at Newton in that sphere, today however he lined up in a small but select field in the Novices Chase. On his hurdles form he held very strong claims but probably due to a couple of very poor efforts over fences for his previous trainer he started as second choice in the betting. Again Hadden Frost rode with supreme confidence and with Tzora jumping beautifully under him the pair coasted home to a bloodless 7 length win. Three down and now only one runner for the yard to come and this was to be the big, tall and handsome unraced son of Scorpion, Watcombe Heights who was to contest the last, the Bumper, a 2 mile flat race on debut. These races are always hotly contested and today was to be no exception all were considered inferior to Boru’s Brook an expensive Irish import who went to post the odds on 2/5 jolly having been second of 20 at Punchestown on his previous and only start to date. With the Hill yard not known for precocious Bumper horses Watcombe Heights went off at 8/1 in the six runner event but yet again there was no stopping the Frost-Hill machine this day. Pulling strongly Hadden Frost looked for cover on the rail tracking the leaders, not easy in a smallish field, his mount finally settled nicely after about a mile and with Frost motionless straightening for home the writing was on the wall for the favourite. Surely it is only a matter of when frost hits the button and so it was, a slap down the shoulder an easing of the reins and Watcombe Heights shoots clear winning by 9 lengths on the bridle. Treble up all hell breaks loose, 8/1 he may have been but backed by the large local crowd he certainly was hats and Racing Post’s go in the air and the roof feels like it may come off the stand as their hero streaks past the winning line. As the commentator called it a red letter day for jockey and training yard. An extraordinary day for all concerned. Martin and Rachel would like to thank all their owners and team members from those heady days when they trained at Littlehempston and hope any who are attending today enjoy a great day out watching a very high quality card of races. Now breeding horses rather than training it is going to be exciting to see the offspring of the like of Detroit Red and Kim Tian Road hitting the track this coming season. With two winners already on the board last season the future looks bright, this sport as always is one for the optimist.

David Luscombe David was born in lpplepen, near Newton Abbot and brought up where he lived and farmed throughout his life there, in not a particularly horsey family, but one that always enjoyed racing, and many other sports too! Indeed, it was racing, and of course farming, which brought David and myself together 36 yrs ago. We married in 1989, and it was not long after that, we got involved with the Martin Pipe racing Club, which we hold many fond memories off, with several years of fun and enjoyment, until the club came to an end! After that, we were always looking for somewhere to be involved again, and it was one Saturday morning, when we called into Martin Hill, who trained just a couple of miles away from us, that once again we were involved in a club/syndicate. In that syndicate was a horse called Monda, who we fell In love with, purchased and started breeding racehorses of our own, and although David was happier watching on, and letting me deal with the day to day management and care of the horses, I know how proud he was of those horses! Meanwhile, David had a half share with Martin in Bold Perk, who gave us, and especially David very much enjoyment. How thrilled he was when dear Perky won a race. I remember Martin saying “never seen David run so fast as he did that day to greet Perky in the winners enclosure”. It gave David and I great pleasure in seeing our own horses run, and especially on the rare occasion we had a runner at our favourite local track, Newton Abbot, and I feel it is a very fitting tribute to sponsor a race here today in his memory, and I’m sure he will be looking over the racecourse and wishing everyone a successful day!

Jack Barber, Trai

ner

Jack purchased Fenrir Binding from the Goffs Spring Horses in Training Sale this year with the ambition to set up Racing Dreams, a fun and affordable racing syndicate. Fenrir Binding, a six-year-old, is a big, bold, athletic boy and looks to have plenty of ability on the racecourse. He’s sired by Norse Dancer who is also the sire to Cheltenham Grade 1-winner, Yanworth. Although he is yet to be first past the post, Jack is looking forward to training him and allowing his owners to enjoy the journey with him. He is rated 82 over both hurdles and fences which gives him plenty of options for the coming season. Jack will most likely aim to start in a hurdle race and then progress to fences at some point throughout the season. Please contact Jack on +44 (0)7904 185720 or email info@jackbarberracing.co.uk to learn more about this exciting ownership opportunity.
