Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Weatherbys Super Sprint Day, featuring seven top class races on one of Newbury’s stand-out summer racedays.
The Weatherbys Super Sprint was established in 1991 and has become a major target for speedy two-year-olds bought at auction. This is the 33rd running of the race and it’s played host to some outstanding winners in the past, including the likes of Tiggy Wiggy, Happy Romance, Gubbass, Eddie’s Boy and most recently Relief Rally.
Many thanks to long-term sponsors Weatherbys for their continued generous support across the years. A big thanks also to today’s other partners; BetVictor, Mettal UK, Darley, British European Breeders Fund and new sponsor Fidelity Energy
Super-producer Sigala will be making his Newbury Racecourse debut on the Party in the Paddock stage, performing live after the last race at approximately 6pm.
Today’s meeting follows yesterday’s action where we saw a potential 2000 Guineas prospect - in the shape of Phil Cunningham’s Yah Mo Be There - taste success in the day’s featured race, the IRE Incentive – Pays To Buy Irish Rose Bowl Stakes.
There’s plenty to come after the Weatherbys Super Sprint too, including the finale of the Summer Evening Series with Hits Radio on Thursday 25th July courtesy of The Beach Club. This meeting promises an evening of exciting racing and Ibiza vibes at The Beach Club stretch tent including a live saxophonist and an afterparty.
Our second Party in the Paddock raceday then arrives on Saturday 17th August for BetVictor Hungerford Day with Dizzee Rascal performing live after racing. Discounted tickets are still available for this raceday but only until Friday 26th July – you can secure your discounted tickets on-site today
As ever, there is free Wi-Fi available to use today in all public areas and if you have any questions or queries during your time with us please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of our team. I would like to remind our racegoers that a free shuttle bus will be available outside the Eastern Entrance from 7pm-9pm running to Newbury Bus Station.
Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable time and that we will see you again next week for the finale of our Summer Evening Series with The Beach Club on Thursday 25th July.

How To Bet
There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Horse Welfare
The welfare of horse and jockey is our top priority. We do everything we can to minimise the chances of horses incurring an injury.
A team of veterinary surgeons is present at every meeting ensuring the safety of the horse. It is our policy to erect green screens around any horse requiring veterinary attention. These provide privacy and a calm environment for the vets and connections while the horse is attended to.
The Weatherbys Super Sprint Roll of Honour
Relief Rally (leading)a hugely impressive winner of last year’s Weatherbys Super Sprint.
Super Sprint History
It is 33 years since the first running of The Weatherbys Super Sprint, and its innovative race conditions see it open to horses that were sold at public auction as yearlings or two-year-olds for £65,000 or less. The weights are allocated so that each horse running carries 1lb less for every £5,000 less than £65,000. Those competing will be bidding for a share of the total prize fund of £250,000.
The race was specifically framed to give good value horses the chance of a big pay day and took place for the first time in 1991 under the name “Newbury Sales Super Sprint Trophy”. It was in 1993 that Weatherbys sponsored the race for the first time and gave it the title “Weatherbys Super Sprint”.
The race has taken place every year since 1991, apart from 2007 due to heavy rainfall. The most successful trainer is Richard Hannon Sr who won the race seven times courtesy of Lyric Fantasy, Risky, Miss Stamper, Presto Vento, If Paradise, Lady Livius and Monsieur Chevalier. His son Richard Hannon Jr. has won the race four times and Tim Easterby and Richard Fahey have each had three winners of the race. From a riding angle, four jockeys have won the race twice, Richard Hughes (Monsieur
Chevalier and Tiggy Wiggy), Michael Hills (Brief Glimpse and Superstar Leo), Michael Roberts (Lyric Fantasy and Good Girl) and Sean Levey (Happy Romance and Gubbass).
Many horses to have run in The Weatherbys Super Sprint have gone on to achieve great things, most recently 2020 winner Happy Romance who is now a seven-time winner, including twice at Group level and Grade 1 placed – earning nearly £750,000 in price money. Not bad for a £25,000 yearling purchase!
Richard Hannon - four time winner.
Arguably the most successful winners in the race’s history are Tiggy Wiggy and Lyric Fantasy.
Tiggy Wiggy built on her success with a win in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes before completing the hat-trick in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. The flying filly also finished in the Classic frame when coming home in third in the 1000 Guineas. Lyric Fantasy, aka ‘The Pocket Rocket’, became the Champion 2yo in the same year as landing the super Sprint and indeed the highest rated filly of 1992. Her most notable success, however, was in the Nunthorpe Stakes in which she became one of only three juveniles to win a Group One race in open-age competition
Temple Meads landed the first prize of £100,000 in 2010, before winning the Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes later in the season back here at Newbury.
The 2009 winner Monsieur Chevalier went on to achieve glory in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, emulating Risky who had completed the same double seventeen years earlier. Unfortunately, injury prevented his return to the track as a three-year-old, but he returned to his best form as a four-year-old when finishing second in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and winning a Listed race at Goodwood.
In 2005, we saw a shock when the Martin Dwyer-ridden Lady Livius
stormed home to win at odds of 100/1, the longest priced winner to date. Apart from Peniaphobia and Tiggy Wiggy, who did it in successive years, the only time that a horse has dipped under the minute mark in this five-furlongs sprint was in 2000 when Superstar Leo stormed home in 59.19 seconds before going on to finish second in two Group 1s, the Prix de l’Abbaye and the Phoenix Stakes.
Fillies have a good strike rate, possibly down to the 5lb allowance that they receive from the colts. 18 of the 32 renewals of this race have been won by fillies. Happy Romance was victorious in 2020 for the successful team of Richard Hannon and Sean Levey, who teamed up again to win with Gubbass in 2021. The talented colt was given a fine ride by his jockey and showed fine subsequent juvenile form, finishing third in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes.
The 2022 winner Eddie’s Boy progressed to win a Group 3 race in France later in the season before being sold for 320,000 Guineas to race on in Qatar.
Relief Rally was a hugely impressive winner of the race last year and came to Newbury having been beaten by a nose in the Group 2 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot in her previous outing. She went on land the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York and would have been fancied for Group 1 glory in the Cheveley Park Stakes but had to miss the race.
Richard Hughes won on Monsieur Chevalier (2009) and Tiggy Wiggy (2014)
Mrs Danvers - the 2016 Weatherbys Super Sprint winner
A Super Sprint Great -
Tiggy Wiggy
Martin Stevens reflects on Tiggy Wiggy’s Weatherbys Super Sprint success 10 years on.
The Weatherbys Super Sprint might not be a black-type race but its roll of honour features some brilliantly talented horses, from the ‘pocket rocket’ Lyric Fantasy through the speedball Superstar Leo to the popular rags-to-riches filly Mrs Danvers.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of another of the five-furlong dash’s iconic winners: the captivatingly quick Tiggy Wiggy.
It was in July 2014 that the bay filly, trained by Richard Hannon for Potensis Bloodstock, Chris Giles and Merriebelle Stable, blazed a trail under Richard Hughes and bolted up by six lengths at Newbury, stopping the clock in under one minute.
Tiggy Wiggy had already blown away the opposition in a maiden at Kempton, a conditions race at Salisbury and the National Stakes at Sandown, and finished second in the Marygate Stakes at York and Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.
She rounded off an outstanding season with decisive victories in the Lowther Stakes at York and Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket to be crowned joint-champion two-year-old filly in Europe with Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Found.
Tiggy Wiggy might not have subsequently achieved as much as Found, who landed the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and defeated Golden Horn to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf, but she did a lot more than many other physically forward juvenile sprinters, finishing a gallant third to Legatissimo in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.
Tiggy Wiggy was bred by Paul and Marie McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud under the CBS Bloodstock banner. She hailed from the fifth crop of her then still upwardly mobile sire Kodiac and was the second produce of the winning mare Kheleyf’s Silver, a Kheleyf half-sister to Norfolk Stakes scorer Masta Plasta.
Paul McCartan remembers: “It was still early days for Kodiac and he was standing at small money, but we’d seen some very nice horses by him and so decided to use him and sent him Kheleyf’s Silver, a lovely young mare from a fast family.
“We were happy with the foal, who turned out to be Tiggy Wiggy. She developed into a nice yearling: straightforward, with good limbs, strength in depth and action. She always looked quick, but obviously we never dreamed she’d turn out to be that quick!
“She had her first run on the 29th of March and won the Cheveley Park Stakes on the 27th of September, so it was a very enjoyable six months following her.”
McCartan pinpoints her Weatherbys Super Sprint success as her signature run.
“It was probably her best performance,” he says. “She seemed to accelerate twice, which is something you rarely see. She was really amazing that day.
“Funnily enough I’d been at Newmarket for the July meeting the week before, and I’d bumped into Richard Hannon’s senior head lad Tony Gorman on the way out and had a quick chat with him. I said it was a pity she hadn’t run in the Cherry Hinton Stakes that week and he replied ‘don’t worry, she’ll win the Super Sprint’.”
Tiggy Wiggy is one of a number of blisteringly quick horses bred by Ballyphilip Stud, along with Battaash and Harry Angel. Fairy Godmother, who weaved her way to victory in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, is another farm graduate.
“She might not be the fastest horse we’ve bred, but she’s definitely one of them,” says the unfailingly modest McCartan with a laugh.
Tiggy Wiggy was bought by agents who are also associated with numerous fast horses in Peter and Ross Doyle. The father-son talent scouts bid £41,000 to secure her from the Ballyphilip Stud draft at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale of 2013.
“Doncaster has been a happy hunting ground for the Doyle family for a long time,” says Ross Doyle. “I remember the first time we saw Tiggy Wiggy quite clearly. We were doing our shortlist before the trainers and owners had got there, and she caught the eye as a very nice, neat and racy filly.
“She was a good combination of Kodiac and Kheleyf, as they both get good-looking horses, and she was from a fast family. She also came from a very good home, of course; the McCartans are brilliant breeders. We felt lucky to get her for £41,000.” The Doyles’ haul
at that year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale included three other high-class two-year-olds in Estidhkaar, Kool Kompany and Limato, but Tiggy Wiggy upstaged them all in 2014.
“It was an unbelievable season,” recalls Ross. “She ran eight times, won six and was beaten narrowly into second on the other two occasions. She didn’t win again at three but finishing third in a deep renewal of the 1000 Guineas was an amazing effort considering she was such a speedball.
“Richard’s team did a wonderful job keeping the lid on her at home, and Hughesy was magnificent with her. She’d think about things a bit when she got to the track so he’d take his legs out of the irons for a while before each race to calm her down.
“She must have been very tough, and possessed a lot of class, to stretch out to a mile in the Guineas like she did. She let down into a lovely model and was sold at the end of her three-year-old season to Coolmore for 2,100,000gns.
“She was the filly of a lifetime for everyone involved with her. We wouldn’t mind another one like her, that’s for sure.”
Coolmore sent Tiggy Wiggy to their own sire phenomenon Galileo for her first five seasons at paddocks. Four of the resultant foals have run and three have won, including her first produce, the colt Year Of The Tiger, who finished third in the Vertem Futurity at two but was sadly fatally injured on his first run at three.
The mare, now 12, was sent to Australia in foal to Frankel to southern-hemisphere time last year. The colt she was carrying, currently a weanling, will reportedly be sent to a select yearling sale early in 2025.
Coolmore Australia also confirmed that she is in foal to St Mark’s Basilica and is booked into Wootton Bassett this year.
Australia might be the best in the world at producing sprinters, but its gene pool will surely still be enhanced by the top-class and tenacious Tiggy Wiggy, a true legend of the Weatherbys Super Sprint.
Millman takes aim at third Super Sprint
Graham Clark gets the lowdown on Rod Millman’s contender for the 2024 Weatherbys Super Sprint.
For all the Group race glory trainer Rod Millman has enjoyed he will forever be thankful to the Weatherbys Super Sprint, which he hopes to win for a third time at Newbury on Saturday with maiden Mapledurham.
Had it not been for the victory of Lord Kintyre (pictured above) in the 1997 renewal of the valuable five-furlong dash, which is open to horses that cost under £65,000 at a public sale, then his attention could have been switched to building houses opposed to training racehorses.
Twenty-two years after watching Lord Kintyre scorch up the turf at the Berkshire track under now retired Brett Doyle, the Devon handler was at it again in 2019 with 3,000 guineas purchase Bettys Hope.
Aside from his two wins, Millman has endured several near misses in the race, which was established in 1991, and has been sponsored by Weatherbys since 1993,
including finishing second in 2022 with Woolhampton, who like Mapledurham, is owned by David Klein.
And while Mapledurham, who is one of 19 horses declared for this year’s £250,000 race, is yet to get her head in front in three starts to date, Millman believes the drop back from six furlongs will play into the hands of the Kodiac filly, who cost 38,000 guineas.
Millman said: “The Weatherbys Super Sprint has been very good to us. Had it not been for Lord Kintyre winning it back in 1997 I would have probably ended up doing something else as back then I only had about 12 or 13 horses in training and just the three two-year-olds.
“I’d have probably been a builder now if he hadn’t won that day as back when I was a jockey I made more money buying a couple of houses and doing them up and selling them as that is what
gave me my first capital to start training.
“This year we intend to run Mapledurham in the race and we hope that the drop back to five furlongs will improve her a little bit.
“She is a good, tough filly that has had three runs. Two have been good and one not so good, but hopefully she will put up a good show here.
“She finished third in a six-furlong maiden at Newbury on her first start and I always like to run them over six or seven furlongs first time as they learn more. She has shown plenty of speed in her races so this should be fine.
“Lord Kintyre was very special, but I’d say she would be better than Bettys Hope, although she will have to carry more weight than the 8st 4lbs she did.
“It is a good race for fillies as they get the five-pound allowance from the colts and you can often buy a better filly for the same money.”
Not only would the £122,925 on offer to the winner help bolster Millman’s prize money total for the year, but he believes it would go some way to making up for selling last year’s sixth Beenham, also owned by Klein.
Millman said: “David’s first runner in the race was Woolhampton, who actually ran well in a valuable handicap at Ascot at the weekend.
“He loves to have a runner in the Super Sprint as Newbury and Weatherbys always look after us well.
“I feel we were a bit unlucky with Beenham in the race last year as we were trying to keep Relief Rally in sight and the other side of the field got away from us.
“However, I dropped a bit of a clanger afterwards as although it was a good choice to buy her, I then told David to sell her and she went and won the Italian 1000 Guineas this year!
“Hopefully we can make up for it this weekend with Mapledurham.”
Among Mapledurham’s potential rivals are the hat-trick seeking Miss Collada who will bid to give trainer Richard Hannon a fifth success in the race.
Andrew Balding won the race back in 2011 with Charles The Great and the Kingsclere handler will be represented by Mister McGregor on this occasion, while It Ain’t Two, who is part-owned by former footballer Michael Owen, is in contention to fly the flag for Hugo Palmer.

Race preview from Weatherbys
We have been extremely proud to sponsor the Weatherbys Super Sprintforover30years,and19have been declared as another twoyear-oldlookstoetchtheirnameon theillustriousrollofhonour.
Hugo Palmer’s filly It Ain’t Two is amongst the most experienced set to line up in the race, and the daughter of Calyx arrives on the back of two strong performances in Listed company. She kept on well into fourth at Newmarket on her penultimate start, form that has worked out well with the third taking Group 2 honours back at the track when last seen, before a good second in the Dragon Stakes against the colts last time. Versatile in regard to trip and ground, she carriesalovelyracingweightandis likelytobepopularinthemarket.
Richard Hannon has a rich history in the contest, carrying the mantle from his father who won the race seven times by landing the spoils four times himself. The trainer relies on Mehmas filly Miss Collada here, who chases the hattrick following victories at Wolverhampton and Salisbury. Archie Watson saddled the winner in 2022 and Vingegaard, also by Mehmas, can boast a positiveRoyalAscotshowing, fifthin the Windsor Castle when last seen. Time For Sandals was a stylish winner of a Kempton maiden on debut, making powerful headway
Harry Eustace’s Time For Sandals was a stylish winner of a Kempton maiden on debut, making powerful headwayfromtherearandwinning with a fair but more in hand than the winning margin suggested. She lacks the experience of many of these but there is precedent, 2021 winner Gubbass a winner of this race on just his second start. Jack Jones’ Caburn will also look to repeatthefeathavinggotuplateto make a winning debut at Salisbury last month, with that form since boostedbytherunner-up.
Karl Burke excels with his two-yearolds and so it is a surprise that he stillsearchesforafirstvictoryinthe contest. The trainer is represented by three in this year’s renewal and Kaadi is perhaps the pick of the trio with Clifford Lee in the saddle. The Soldier’s Call filly has run well in Listed company over in France the last twice and in fact sets the standardonofficialratings.

A Group 3 winner in April, she didn’t have the clearest of runs when a creditable fifth in the Prix de Diane and her trainer is confident that the daughter of Camelot will relish this step up to 1m4f.
