THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

TODAY’S FEATURE RACE Our feature race today is the Irish Stallion Farms EBFF Novice Stakes for two-year-olds. two-yea The contest has attracted six runners, including David O’Meara’s ANIMATO, NIMATO, who is ridden by DDanny Tudhope. Owned by the famous Cheveley Park Stud he ran well on his latest start before fading into ffourth but with another run under hiss belt he could improve again. DUNGAR GLORY is the only newcomer in the t field and could be up against it. Currentt top trainer, Keith Dalgleish has the highest rated in the race with BELTANE B and Callum Rodriguez will be hoping ping he can deliver to get him back in front in the jockey’s championship champio table.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH CH PAUL MULRENNAN has his usual excellent book ook of rides includin including one on the recent winner, Sound of Iona, who was a winner on her most recent start. ANDREW W MULLEN M has been on a bit of a charge in the jockeys table and will be looking to add more ore winners w to his already impressive tally. With four rides on Saturday, his best chance lookss to be Havana Go, w who has begun to slip down the weights to a workable mark. CALLUM UM RODGRIGUEZ has rides in aall but two of our eight race card and will be looking ing to try and get his name back at the top. Geometra Ge Ginty has a good chance in the Edinburg Edinburgh Gin

TRAINERS TO WATCH

ROGER FELL has the favourite in our second race of the day and sends up quite a few runners to try and get some winners on the board. All his runners look to have some sort of chance and you wouldn't be shocked to see him pick up one or two races. KEITH DALGLEISH has his usual host of runners including two in the 3:30. Beechwood Emily looks to be the pick on jockey bookings, but Sam James will be giving it all he has got to try and stay at the top of the table. BRIAN ELLISON has an unusually large number of runners on today’s card and could be one to note throughout the day if they come in for some market support.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 3:30 THE THISTLE TIMBER AND BUILDING SUPPLIES HANDICAP STAKES Our Opener is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.

4:00 THE EDINBURGH GIN HANDICAP STAKES The second race is a similar affair but this time is for horses rated between 66 and 85. It is also run over the slightly shorter distance of seven furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

4:35 THE VISIT RACINGTV.COM NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65.

5:05 THE IRISH STALLION FARMS EBF NOVICE STAKES (GBB RACE) Our second two-year-old affair is a six furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful.

5:40 THE JOIN RACING TV NOW HANDICAP STAKES This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 60 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55.

6:15 THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES (DIV I) Our next race is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. It is almost idential to the first race and to qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 55 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 50.

6:50 THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES (DIV II) The penultimate race the second divison of our previous race. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

7:20 THE WATCH ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES Closing the card is another handicap contest, This is a one mile six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like all other handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 60 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Eaach horse has beeen given a star ratingg, these are defined beloow: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selectedd to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chancce of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means ouut of the reeckoning but at least one or two hold stronger cllaims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win butt not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

BETTING FORECAST: 6-5 St Mark’s Basilica, 7-4Tarnawa, 11-4 Poetic Flare, 20 Patrick Sarsfield. A small but select line-up and, with tactics likely to play a significant role, ST MARK’S BASILICA may hold the aces. The Dewhurst Stakes winner is bidding for a fifth successive Group 1 success having landed both French classics this term and cemented his reputation with a brilliant turn of foot to beat Addeybb and Mishriff in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. That may prove a crucial weapon here with Ryan Moore likely to play his cards in the straight. Tarnawa won three times at the highest level last year including over this trip on testing ground at Longchamp and landed the odds in style on her reappearance here last month. Some rain would boost her chance while Poetic Flare relishes a fast surface as evidenced by victories in the Qipco 2000 Guineas and a top class effort in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. It will be fascinating to see how he copes with this extra quarter mile. Dual course winner Patrick Sarsfield looks outclassed.

Charlie Appleby can secure a first St Leger win with Irish Derby hero HURRICANE LANE who spreadeagled his field in the Grand Prix de Paris and holds a clear form edge. There is little to worry about on the score of his stamina too with his dam a 2m winner. Gordon Stakes victor Ottoman Emperor looks the one to chase him home, with The Mediterranean appealing as the pick of Aidan O’Brien’s quartet.

PLAY SMARTER

A very well-related individual, ROACH POWER shaped with plenty of promise when runner-up in a Carlisle novice on debut 16 days ago, doing plenty of running to get in to things from off the pace and finding only a potentially useful sort too strong on opposite side of the track. He gets the nod with progress anticipated. Beltane rates the chief threat, ahead of Shaladar.

IRON SHERIFF again shaped better than the bare result at Beverley 2 weeks ago, travelling best when not clear run over 1f out, and is worth persevering with at this lowly level. Redzone took a step back in the right direction in this headgear at Redcar and is on a fair mark if building on that, while Sixcor should give another good account.
