STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Eaach horse has beeen given a star ratingg, these are defined beloow: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selectedd to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chancce of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means ouut of the reeckoning but at least one or two hold stronger cllaims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win butt not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

TODAY’S FEATURE RACES Today’s feature race is the Stobo Castle Ladies Day ay Gold Cup. Run over sseven furlongs and 33 yards, nine runners go to post for what promises to bee thrilling race. The mark market currently has Lion Tower and Gometra Ginty joint favourites but there is little to separate the eentire field. Grant Tuer has beenn in terrific form this season, so it's no surprise to see his four-yea four-year-old at the top of the market. A winner er of three races this season he has shot up the ratings and is i now 15lb higher than when he first st reappeared this season. A winner at Musselburgh this season, seas he certainly looks worthy of favouritism. avouritism. He won't have it all his way though as Keith Dalgleish will w should prove a worthy rival. Danzan is the sole runner for Tim Easterby who has also been in ggreat form as of late

JOCKEYS TO WATCH CH

CALLUM RODRIGUEZ has taken thee lead in the jocke jockey championships, leaving JOE FANNING AND BEN CURTIS battling ng out second. With W York on this week, it adds another dimension to the championshipp as oonly SAM JAMES is riding from those near the top of the table. He is only ly two behind CALLUM C RODRIGUEZ and has six rides to try and steal eal a lead over the field. W We could also see the emergence of other her jockeys further down the table and iit could set up for a photo finish as the field ttightens.

TRAINERS TO WATCH

KEITH DALGLEISH's partnership with Callum Rodriguez has been very lucrative here at Musselburgh so far this season but their partnership is going to be temporarily put on hold this week. Instead, claimer Billy Garritty and Sam James will get a chance to prove their worth in his absence and Dalgleish has six chances to further his lead. HIPSWAY will have an excellent chance in a small field in our first race of the day where the previously mentioned Sam James will be hoping for a quick winner to get his day off to a flying start. His runners are absent for the second, but he has a horse in each of the remaining five races. GOMETRA GINTY is his hope for our feature race and DONIZETTI has been giving wind surgery to try and help him get off the mark.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 2:15 THE POMMERY ROSE BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF MAIDEN STAKES Our opener this afternoon is a one mile, 208-yard handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards who are still maidens. This race is a one mile and two furlongs maiden stakes for three-year-olds and upwards. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

2:50 THE GAYNOR WINYARD TROPHY NURSERY HANDICAP A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular one mile race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 65.

3:25 THE MADELEINE CUP HANDICAP (CLASS 5) This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

4:00 THE STOBO CASTLE LADIES DAY GOLD CUP HANDICAP Our feature race of the day is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

4:30 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY CUVEE LOUISE HANDICAP This is a seven furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

5:05 THE 2021 ATLANTIC NOMADS CHALLENGE CUP HANDICAP Our penultimate race of the day is an almost idential race to our last and carries the same conditions. The ony difference being it is ran over one mile four furlongs. Like the previous race most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

5:40 THE CHAMPAGNE POMMERY BLANC DE BLANCS HANDICAP Closing the card is another handicap contest, this time run over a mile three-year-olds and upwards who have been rated from 51 to 70. You should know the score by now with handicaps, so good luck and we hope to see you back at Musselburgh Racecourse for our two meeting's next week!

BATTYEFORD BOY left his previous efforts well behind when making a winning handicap debut in this headgear at Leicester on Tuesday and is taken to defy a penalty in what is arguably a weaker event. Sun Rising has a similar profile to the selection so looks the obvious threat, while Novak looks the type to do better again now handicapping.

PLAY SMARTER

An open-looking sprint handicap with the vote in favour of REFUGE. He again went agonisingly close when beaten narrowly by a well-handicapped stable switcher at Catterick 4 days ago and the refitting of cheekpieces may just put an extra edge on him. Melody King looked well served by the drop to 5f when successful at Hamilton 3 days ago and, along with Machree, heads up the dangers.

LION TOWER was gelded last winter and has subsequently raised his game, winning 3 of his 6 starts this year. He proved 1 1/4 lengths too strong for Danzan over C&D on his penultimate start and is taken to repeat the dose, despite meeting that rival on 5lb worse terms. Danzan’s losing run continues to mount, but he put in another good shift at Ripon on Saturday and is next best ahead of Zumurud.

If able to reproduce the form of his latest effort at Beverley, YUKON may well open his account at the fifteenth attempt. Indeed, David O’Meara’s charge found only a well-related and improving 3-y-o too good on that occasion, pulling clear of the rest, and is now 1lb lower in the weights. Reams of Love and This Ones For Fred, both equipped with first-time cheekpieces, rate the main dangers.
