If this is your first visit to Hexham, we very much hope you have an enjoyable day. If you are a regular, we appreciate your loyal support and welcome you back once again. We are grateful to today’s sponsors, Hexham’s on-course bookmakers, whom like everyone have endured a torrid 18 months as a result of the Covid pandemic, but we are delighted to have them back in the betting ring today and for all future meetings. Contract Scotland are kindly sponsoring today’s feature race to celebrate the retirement of their long-serving employee Colin Woodward, along with Loraine Coates who is celebrating her birthday, and NE-Bet. We have named the last race of the day in honour of Michael Morris, who has given the racecourse decades of loyal service and has finally decided to call it a day. Michael started working for Hexham Steeplechase Company in the 1980s and has seen and been involved in many improvements that have taken place since, not least the installation of the lake which has enabled the racecourse to produce good, safe ground for which it has become renowned. Should you require any assistance or information whilst on course please do not hesitate to ask any member of staff, catering or stewarding who will be only to pleased to assist, or contact the race day office located next to the turnstiles.

WE WISH ALL OWNERS AND TRAINERS WITH A RUNNER HERE TODAY EVERY SUCCESS. Robert Whitelock Racecourse Manager

BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse. 3. Timeform view and TFR rating 4. Horse’s trainer & their location Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race.

EACH HORSE HAS BEEN GIVEN A STAR RATING, DEFINITION BELOW: Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Selected to win the race. Can be given little or no chance. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

BET TING WITH THE BOOKMAKERS DIFFERENT WAYS TO BET - WIN OR EACH-WAY

The two main types of bet are win and each-way. For win bets, your horse needs to win the race outright. An each-way bet is effectively two bets – one for your horse to win and one for it to be placed. So a £2 each-way bet will cost £4. A bookmaker taking each-way bets will display the terms on which they accept such bets on their board. In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • Fewer than 3 runners - Win bets only, no places offered • 3 or 4 runners – Win bets only . Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position they may offer place terms at 1/5 odds a place 1-2. • 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2 • 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3 • Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3 • Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1-2-3-4 • Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1-2-3-4

PL ACING YOUR BET

Shop around for the best odds. When you have decided where to place your bet, state the number of your horse and the stake, for example “Number 4, £2 win”. Listen to the bookmaker repeat the number of the horse and the stake to their clerk and hand them your money. You will then be given an itemised receipt detailing your bet and potential winnings. You should keep this safe until you have heard ‘Weighedin’ announced after the race. If your bet is successful, hand your ticket to the bookmaker and they will give you your winnings.

PLAY SMARTER

LADY SHANAWELL was a good second behind a subsequent winner at Sedgfield last time, shaping as if a return to this trip will suit, so is taken to go one better off the same mark. Methag was a creditable second over this C&D 2 starts back and has dipped below her last winning mark, so rates the main threat ahead of Irish-raider Island Mahee, who’s probably still improving.

R ACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE Hexham Racecourse employs veterinary surgeons whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the Racecourse’s Veterinary team. Qualified Paramedics and Doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving the treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment.

Things conspired against BREAKING THE ICE at Cartmel last time so that run shouldn’t be taken to suggest the handicapper’s got his measure and he gets the nod to make it 3 wins in his last 4 starts. The fact SCOTS SONNET boasts only one victory on Flat/over hurdles is a concern but he scored convicingly over hurdles 7 days ago, benefiting from a positive ride. Operating from the same mark, he could be worth chancing to build on that now his sights are set on chasing. Fellow last-time-out winners Tokaramore and Cash Again, on return from a break, are others to consider.
