A warm welcome to Hamilton Park for our DX Home Improvements Family Racenight featuring Callum Beattie. Family-themed racedays play a big part in our fixture list and tonight is no exception as we welcome racegoers of all ages to enjoy the combination of great racing, free family activities and live music.
We are now halfway through the 2024 season and I would like to thank all Owners, Trainers and Stable Staff who have supported our fixtures so far this year, as well as the whole Hamilton Park team who each play an integral role in delivering the Hamilton Park experience for you all to enjoy.
A huge thank you to David Stephen, Shaun Brown and the team at DX Home Improvements who are our new title sponsors for this evening’s fixture along with tonight’s other race sponsors, Stephen McCluskey from Summerstorm Bloodstock, the European Breeder’s Fund, JFM Electrical and our very own Hampton By Hilton Hamilton Park hotel – I do hope you and all your guests enjoy your evening with us.
Our feature race at 8pm sees a strong field of ten runners set to go to post with some familiar course and distance winners going head-to-head. Arkenstaar, owned by Peter Appleton and Anne Elliott, has an incredible record having won on five of his six career runs here, most recently at the end of May, whilst the Tim Easterby-trained Mysteryofthesands will be looking to follow up on a hard-fought victory here last week. Trainer Mark Walford is double-handed in the race with Beltane and Naval Academy, who is fresh from winning at Haydock Park on Saturday over seven furlongs.
In addition to our usual array of free children’s entertainment around the grounds, tonight sees the return of our Kid’s Fancy Dress competition, sponsored by Rocca Ristorante, with £250 up for grabs for the winner The competition is open to under 18’s, who should make their way to the stage on the main lawn to register ahead of the first round of judging at 5pm. Our judges will select the final three who will be invited to the Winner’s Enclosure after the 4th race (7.45pm) for the prize giving. Last year’s competition was won by ‘The Beekeeper’ in a close competition that also included ‘Del Boy’ and ‘Vending Machine’. I’m always amazed at the standard of costume on display and so I’m sure the competition will be hotly contested again this year
After his incredible live show at Hamilton Park last year, Scottish singer-songwriter Callum Beattie will be returning to the stage after racing to perform his hit album ‘Vandals’, along with some of his earlier songs such as ‘Salamander Street’ and his incredible cover of ‘Caledonia’. Callum has been performing his hit songs up and down the country, with this summer proving to be his biggest yet. It’s set to be another fantastic show so make sure you stay on and get rocking at the racecourse!
Have a wonderful evening and I hope you back a winner or two!
Kind regards,
ASHLEY MOON, RACECOURSE MANAGING DIRECTOR

Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.
ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next
ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface
AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status
APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding
BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature
CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice COLT male, ungelded horse up to four years old
COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track
DAM mother of a horse
DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail
DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)
DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before
EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings - thus £5 at evens wins a further £5
FILLY female horse up to four years old
FOAL horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year
FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile)
GELDING castrated horse
GOING the description of conditions underfoot on the racecourse. Official Jockey Club going reports progress as follows: Heavy - soft - good to soft - good - good to firm - firm - hard
GREEN (of a horse) inexperienced
HAND unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured, at the shoulder
JOLLY betting parlance for the favourite in a race - the horse with the shortest odds
JUDGE official responsible for declaring the finishing order of a race and the distances between the runners
JUVENILE two-year-old horse
MAIDEN horse which has not won a race
MARE female horse five years and over
MONKEY betting parlance for £500
ODDS ON odds where the winnings are less than the stake (which is of course returned to you): thus a winning £2 bet at 2-1 on wins you £1
OFF THE BIT/OFF THE BRIDLE describes a horse being pushed along by his jockey, losing contact with the bit in his mouth
ON THE BIT/ON THE BRIDLE describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit
OVER THE TOP where a horse is said to have gone if he has passed his peak for the season
PACE ‘up with the pace’ means close to the leaders; ‘off the pace’ means some way behind the leaders
PADDOCK area of the racecourse incorporating the pre-parade ring, parade ring and winner’s enclosure
PATTERN the elite races, divided in Flat racing into Groups One, Two, Three and Listed
PENALTY weight added to the allotted handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were originally published
PHOTO FINISH electronic photographic device which determines minimal distances in a close finish
PLATE shoe worn by horse for racing
PONY betting parlance for £25
RULE 4 betting rule covering deductions made from winning bets if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed but before the ‘Under Starter’s Orders’ signal; the amount deducted depends on the price of the withdrawn horse
RUN FREE describes a horse going too fast, usually early in the race, to allow it to settle
SCOPE the potential for physical development in a horse
SIRE father of a horse
SPREAD A PLATE when a racing plate or horseshoe becomes detached from an animal’s hoof, this sometimes causes a delay while the horse is re-shod
SPRINGER/STEAMER a horse whichshortens dramatically in the betting

YANKEE combination bet involving four selections in different races: six doubles, four trebles and one four-horse accumulator - eleven bets

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
Leading course trainer (19-24): J Goldie (43 wins from 375 runners, 11%) runs CUBAN ROCK
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): J Goldie (3 wins from 28 runners, 11%) runs CUBAN ROCK

RACE SUMMARY: This looks ripe for IMPRESSOR, who produced his best effort of the season so far at Ripon last month and a reproduction of that would surely make him hard to beat. Lady Celia has looked better than ever in two starts since returning from a break in May and she could be the one to follow the selection home. A 4lb rise for her recent C&D success could find Zaphea out but she shouldn’t be far away all the same 1-2-3: 1.IMPRESSOR (IRE) 2.LADY CELIA 3.ZAPHEA

RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a five furlongs restricted maiden stakes for two-year-olds in Bands C and D. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
Leading course trainer (19-24): J Goldie (43 wins from 375 runners, 11%) runs JOSHUAS DREAM
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (10 wins from 46 runners, 22%) runs AIRSPEED
Longest Traveller: RIVER BLACKWATER trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 208 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: EVENS Airspeed (IRE), 11-2 Joshuas Dream (GB), 6-1 Tower of Africa (IRE), 14-1 Beaujolais Nouveau (GB), 16-1 Inertia (IRE), River Blackwater (GB), 25-1 Causin A Commotion (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY: Karl Burke’s AIRSPEED possesses much the best form so is fancied to get off the mark at the third attempt at the chief expense of Tower of Africa who shouldn’t be ruled out despite fluffing her lines at Beverley last time out. Joshuas Dream is improving with his racing and appeals as the pick of the remainder for minor honours.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.
Leading course trainer (19-24): J Goldie (43 wins from 375 runners, 11%) runs RORY
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D O’Meara (5 wins from 44 runners, 11%) runs COLD STARE
Longest Traveller: COLD STARE trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 208 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 10-3 Slainte Mhath (GB), 4-1 Moyola (GB), 9-2 Giselles Izzy (IRE), 6-1 Cold Stare (IRE), 8-1 Rory (GB), 10-1 Mostar Dreams (IRE), 12-1 Quintus Arrius (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY: Preference is for MOYOLA, who did the job well when resuming winning ways over this C&D last month and he looked a shade unlucky (encountered traffic problems) at Ripon next time. Slainte Mhath has slipped to a very attractive mark and she is second choice, while Giselles Izzy is also entitled to have a say in the finish. 1-2-3:

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
Leading course trainer (19-24): J Goldie (43 wins from 375 runners, 11%) runs TAFSIR

ONE MILE about 68 YARDS (8f abt 68yds) (1600m)
8.00pm
This is a one mile and 68 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
Leading course trainer (19-24): T Easterby (25 wins from 198 runners, 13%) runs MYSTERYOFTHESANDS
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (10 wins from 46 runners, 22%) runs CLASSY BOY
Weightwatcher: BELTANE won off a handicap mark of 77, his rating is now down 8lb to 69.
Longest Traveller: MYSTERYOFTHESANDS trained by T Easterby, MAKEEN trained by J Camacho, both Malton, 203 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 5-1 Naval Academy (GB), 11-2 Thewind Cries Mary (IRE), 6-1 Mysteryofthesands (GB), 13-2 Classy Boy (IRE), 15-2 Helter Skelter (IRE), 10-1 Arkenstaar (GB), 14-1 Makeen (GB), Gainsbourg (GB), 16-1 Banner Road (IRE), 25-1 Beltane (IRE)
RACE SUMMARY: MYSTERYOFTHESANDS found a bit of progression to shed his maiden tag over C&D 11 days ago and, now up and running, Tim Easterby’s 3-y-o is fancied to follow up at the expense of Naval Academy, who opened his account in straightforward fashion at Haydock earlier this month and should remain competitive from 3lb higher Thewind Cries Mary and Classy Boy are also considered. 1-2-3: 1.MYSTERYOFTHESANDS 2.NAVAL

ONE MILE about THREE FURLONGS (11f abt 15yds) (2200m)
This one mile and three furlongs handicap race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated between 46 and 60.
