ALMADA RACEDAY TUESDAY 29 JUNE 2021

WELCOME A very warm welcome to Hamilton Park this afternoon for another fine day of racing. As Wimbledon starts again, we can turn our Scottish disappointment from the Euros into anticipation to watch Andy Murray in action, now that he is fit and ready to go at SW19. Here we have Scottish runners aplenty taking on some big names from the south especially in our feature race today, the Stay at Hampton by Hilton Almada Mile. Godolphin’s Stunning Beauty has not come all this way to make up the numbers and with talent like Pat Cosgrave on board, trainer Saeed bin Suroor will be looking for the top place. Last week’s winner Jump the Gun will be out to make it difficult though, as will Chicester, owned by our racecourse Chairman, Sir Ian Good and his lovely daughter Cat, having just won the Carlisle Bell last week. The race is run today for the beautiful trophy customised for us by Hamilton & Inches after a most generous bequeath to the racecourse from the late Julian Watson, a racecourse shareholder, horse owner, and all round gentleman and great friend of Hamilton Park who sadly passed away in 2016. Having a commemorative trophy made was something he always wanted to do, to be remembered at this his favourite racecourse. Sir Julian Watson, we remember you well today. Our thanks today go to our sister company’s team at our on-site Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park hotel who has sponsored the card together with Racing TV, our media partner who brings you all the racing action live on Sky channel 426. Our hotel is certainly proving very popular for lots of you who I know have stayed there as well as popping in for a drink or a bite to eat. The team members have all done extremely well working through this particularly challenging time with all the restrictions the hospitality industry has had to face and overcome. I have a great team there as well as here at the racecourse and I’d like to thank them for all their hard work. As June comes to an end and we hear of 19 July being a possible date for Level 0 in Scotland, we will be discussing again with the team at South Lanarkshire Council, what if any changes we can introduce to relax some of the restrictions we are having to work with and you our customers are having to comply with. Karly, in the office, is handling your calls as fast as she possibly can but please keep an eye on our website and social media platforms where we will share news just as soon as we get it. We very much hope that we can all open up more freely but safely too over the rest of our summer season. Have a great afternoon today; stay safe and be lucky! Kind regards, VIVIEN CURRIE MBE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE

THE RACINGTV.COM MAIDEN STAKES (CLASS 4) (A HAMILTON PARK 2YO SERIES QUALIFIER) (GBB RACE) RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a six furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 51 to 70. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (16-21): K Dalgleish (56 wins from 439 runners, 13%) runs BEECHWOOD EMILY Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Johnston (15 wins from 107 runners, 14%) runs BAILEYS WARRIOR Longest Traveller: LUBNA trained by S bin Suroor, Newmarket, 360 miles.

THE HAMPTON BY HILTON HAMILTON PARK NOVICE STAKES (CLASS 5) RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of six furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (16-21): R Fahey (41 wins from 272 runners, 15%) runs HIS PRIDE Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Fahey (9 wins from 73 runners, 12%) runs HIS PRIDE Longest Traveller: GENERAL SAGO trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 208 miles.

BETTING FORECAST: 15-8 General Sago (IRE), 9-4 Dulla Bhatti (GB), 7-2 Prince of Pearls (GB), 13-2 His Pride (GB), 50-1 Mazastep (GB) RACE SUMMARY: GENERAL SAGO possibly found the demands of a big-field York handicap beyond him at this early stage of his career 17 days ago. He was previously proving steadily progressive and earns the vote to get off the mark back in calmer waters. Dulla Bhatti and Prince of Pearls head up the dangers. 1-2-3: 1.GENERAL SAGO (IRE) 2.DULLA BHATTI 3.PRINCE OF PEARLS

The Watson Memorial Cup

The winning Owner of today’s feature race, the Almada Mile Handicap Stakes, will be presented with the Watson Memorial Cup. Sir Julian Somerled Watson, 7th Baronet of Earnock, was a shareholder, loyal supporter and regular visitor to Hamilton Park. Following the passing of Sir Julian in May 2016, the Watson Baronetcy became extinct and since then the team at Hamilton Park have worked closely with the Watson estate to ensure a lasting legacy Since it was founded in c1895, The Watson Baronetcy of Earnock contributed considerably to the local Hamilton community. Sir John Watson, 1st Baronetof Earnock, owned several collieries in the area including the Neilsland and Earnock colliery on the Neilsland Estate which covered over 2,000 acres. The Watson family also gifted the elaborate Watson Fountain to the town of Hamilton, which still stands proudly at the triangular merging of Cadzow Street and Muir Street. World-renowned silversmiths, Hamilton & Inches of Edinburgh, have created ‘The Watson Memorial Cup’ which will pay tribute to the Watson Baronetcy and Sir Julian’s love of racing through special hand-engravings. In 2012, the racecourse also trusted the leading silversmiths with the creation of the Ladbrokes Lanark Silver Bell Trophy inspired by the original ancient relic. Ashley Moon, Racecourse General Manager at Hamilton Park, said “The £30,000 Almada Mile Handicap is rapidly becoming one of the most popular races in the Hamilton Park calendar and it’s great to see such a strong field for today’s race. To honour the memory of the Watson Baronetcy, and their contribution to the local area, is something we are very proud to do and associating the family with this particular race is of great significance for the racecourse and the people of Hamilton.

THE STAY AT HAMPTON BY HILTON ALMADA MILE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) (FOR THE WATSON MEMORIAL CUP) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85.

RACE STATISTICS

Leading course trainer (16-21): K Dalgleish (56 wins from 439 runners, 13%) runs CHICHESTER and HOWZER BLACK Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Johnston (15 wins from 107 runners, 14%) runs FRED and HEADINGLEY Fancy That: M Johnston won this race in 2018 and 2019. He gets the nod to back that up in this stronger contest, with Carlisle Bell winner Chichester, and the sole 3-y-o Headingley, just a couple of the likely dangers. 1-2-3: 1.JUMP THE GUN (IRE) 2.CHICHESTER 3.HEADINGLEY (IRE) STEWARDS NOTE: HORTZADAR: Following its run on 16/6/2021 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run.

THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55.

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (13 wins from 105 runners, 12%) runs NAUGHTY ANA Weightwatcher: CHARLEMAINE won off a handicap mark of 74, his rating is now down 26lb to 48. Longest Traveller: TWELVE DIAMONDS trained by M Herrington, Willoughton, 260 miles.

Stronsay has been in good form over 6f here recently and could be the one to give Iain Jardine’s filly most to think about. 1-2-3: 1.ROSE BANDIT (IRE) 2.STRONSAY (IRE) 3.HARD SOLUTION STEWARDS NOTE: SHARRABANG: Following its run on 14/6/2021 it was reported that the horse was impeded soon after starting.
