Welcome to Goodwood for day four of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Today’s race programme is highlighted by the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes introduced in 1911 to mark the accession to the British throne of King George V the previous year making it a relatively recent addition to the festival calendar.
Run over the minimum distance of five furlongs for three-year-olds and over, the race has provided an opportunity for many of the sport’s outstanding sprinters to showcase their extraordinary talents.
For many the race will evoke memories of the brilliant mare Lochsong who recorded backto-back victories on the 1990s, and the record time of 56.01 seconds set by Rudi’s Pet in 1999 remains unbroken. But no horse has been more dominant than Battaash whose four consecutive wins beginning as a three-year-old in 2017 is a feat unlikely ever to be matched.
For good measure Battaash followed-up by adding York’s Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes to his tally but a tilt at a fifth King George Qatar Stakes at the age of seven was thwarted and the gelding was retired the following day.
Last year we celebrated the success of dual Group 1 winner Highfield Princess who readily justified her odds of 4/9 with a three lengths victory.
We are grateful to our Presenting Partner, the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, to Bonhams for their continued support of the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes, new partners Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Hawes & Curtis and to Coral whose support today extends to the valuable Coral Golden Mile and our concluding Coral Play Racing-Super-Series For Free Handicap Stakes.
I wish you all a pleasant and profitable day.
The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL
GOODWOOD HISTORY
Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop. The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.
Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection
Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Refraction, winner of the Oaks in 1845, was one of eleven racehorses owned by the fifth Duke of Richmond, and part of his zenith era as an owner.
Roncesvalles was one of the fifth Duke of Richmond’s most successful racehorses, winning six races between 1818 and 1821.

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

race summary
After finishing a commendable third in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting, before filing the same position in a similar race to this at Newbury most recently, there is good reason to give the much-improved KYLE OF LOCHALSH another chance. Last year’s winner, Temporize won that Newbury contest but might struggle to uphold the form over this longer trip off 3lb higher. Therefore, Ascot Stakes fourth Get Shirty looks the bigger danger this time, while Robert Johnson completes the shorlist.

RACE SUMMARY
Although only seventh in the 2000 Guineas, it was still a solid effort from TASK FORCE and, given the strength of that form, the lightly-raced son of Frankel is dangerous to underestimate on just his second start over a mile. Unable to stay with the pace in the Jersey at Royal Ascot, this stiffer test could be absolutely ideal for the selection at this stage. The Sir Henry Cecil Stakes winner, Al Musmak is also open to progression over this trip, while Lead Artist and Socialite are others to seriously consider.

RACE SUMMARY
REBEL TERRITORY has won when fresh and, having landed a class 2 handicap at Newmarket before staying on well to take last season’s Victoria Cup at Ascot, the Amanda Perrett-trained gelding is an intriguing option on his return to action. Holloway Boy obviously enter the reckoning as a progressive type to seriously consider, while Orbaan is a lively outsider considering he won this in 2022 off the same mark. Seventh in this last year, Perotto also appeals for a place.

TODAY’S FEATURE
king george qatar stakes
Goodwood’s premier race for sprinters, the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes is a hotly contested five furlongs event for three-year-olds and upwards.
A comparatively modern innovation in the context of Goodwood’s 224-year history, it was inaugurated in 1911 to mark the accession to the British throne of King George V the previous year and has become one of the highlights of the British Racing Calendar.
It has been won by some outstanding performers and those with long memories will recall the brilliant mare Lochsong who left an indelible mark on the race with back-to-back victories in the early 1990s under Frankie Dettori. She has been followed by a host of other high-class sprinters, including Rudi’s Pet whose time of 56.01 seconds is a record as yet unbeaten.
One name, however, stands out above all others, the remarkable Battaash who ran up a sequence of four consecutive wins beginning in 2017 in the hands of Jim Cowley. The Charlie Hills-trained gelding was an automatic favourite to make it five in a row in 2021 but the sevenyear-old could finish only seventh behind the French trained mare Suesa on ground thought to be slower than the Shadwell flagbearer would have preferred.
Last year it was the turn of star sprinter Highfield Princess who came with a big reputation having enjoyed Group 1 success at the Curragh, York and Deauville. Sent off the 4-9 favourite the John Quinn-trained mare won with some ease. She went on to capture the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp, but in March this year unfortunately suffered an injury. Her stunning victory on the Downs here is unlikely to be forgotten for some years to come.
Students of form will no doubt have noted the number of fillies and mares to have won the race in its recent history and that three-year-olds have the best record of success with more than 30 winners coming from that category, while winning favourites have proved a reliable statistic for those betting on the outcome of an event which continues to present the top sprinters with a valuable and important opportunity to showcase their talent.

RACE SUMMARY
Asfoora finished behind a couple of these in the Temple Stakes at Haydock, but the Aussie sprinter was seen to best effect when taking the King Charles III on quick ground at the Royal meeting. Henry Dwyer’s mare is expected to go well under optimal conditions, although BIG EVS is fancied to gain his revenge. The son of Blue Point showed blistering pace before wilting late on in that same contest. It was an excellent effort given that a stiff finish wouldn’t have been ideal, and this test will be more suitable. Live In The Dream has been below his best this season but it would be folly to dismiss him, while Jasour is another to consider following two creditable performances at the highest level.

RACE SUMMARY
My Prospero was last seen finishing down the field in the Champion Stakes but given his ability to go well when fresh, William Haggas’ five-year-old merits the utmost respect. However, the vote goes to CICERO’S GIFT, who carried topweight to victory on his return from over a year off the track at Sandown last month. The unexposed son of Muharaar had previously caught the eye in the St James’ Palace and appeals as the type to take this en route to similar races in the future. Cairo was far from disgrace in the Queen Anne and may improve for the addition of first-time cheekpieces. totewin: Cicero’s Gift toteeachway: My Prospero

RACE SUMMARY
The Dragon King struck by a neck on his nursery debut at Windsor on his latest outing and he only has a 4lb higher mark to contend with, so has to be considered. However, he could come out second best to SEX ON FIRE, who had Rare Change (third) a neck behind when occupying the runner-up berth at Haydock last time. Jamie Spencer is an eye-catching jockey booking and he can confirm that form in order to record his second career victory. Ardennes and The Actor are others to consider.

RACE SUMMARY
Dambuster was well supported in the market on his handicap debut at Sandown last time, but he could only manage sixth. There is every chance that he will bounce back, so he has to be respected, but SUN GOD looks a more appealing option. Hughie Morrison’s three-year-old finished a fair fourth in a hot handicap at Newmarket last time and the handicapper may have been kind to only give him a 1lb rise for that effort.. The son of Fastnet Rock is fancied to get back to winning ways, while New Chelsea and Wafei aren’t ruled out either.
