Welcome to day two of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Today’s feature race, the Qatar Sussex Stakes, is widely regarded as one of the most important all-aged contests of the European Pattern and a race which deservedly attracts many of the top milers in training competing for a share of its £1 million prize fund.
Without doubt a glittering highlight, the Qatar Sussex Stakes boasts strong support on this afternoon’s programme with two Group 3 contests, the Visit Qatar Oak Tree Stakes showcasing talented fillies and mares over seven furlongs and the Jaeger-LeCoultre Molecomb Stakes for two-year-olds with Group credentials in their sights.
Today’s eight-race card, the richest of the five days of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, opens with the Group 1 Qatar International Stakes the most valuable race of its kind staged in the UK. Last year’s running saw a true champion in the French-trained Al Ghadeer. A comfortable winner, he extended his winning sequence to six and claimed his fourth Group 1 success in the Al Shaqab Racing colours, firmly establishing him as world’s best Purebred Arabian in training.
Once again outstanding action on the track is complemented by a wide range of opportunities to socialise with family and friends, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy first class hospitality and entertainment. The Earl’s Lawn has an energetic mix of DJs and live music, wonderful food offerings and with the Hendrick’s Gin Bar close to hand it provides a lively and vibrant atmosphere.
As we look forward to crowning two more Group 1 champions this afternoon, we extend our gratitude to the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, Visit Qatar, Jaeger-LeCoultre, World Pool, The European Breeders’ Fund and Coral for their support of today’s racing.
I wish them and all racegoers a memorable day’s racing.
The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL
GOODWOOD HISTORY
Horses have raced at Goodwood since at least the 1740s, and perhaps earlier. A painting in the Goodwood Collection from that period shows the second Duke of Richmond surveying a race in the grounds, with Chichester Cathedral in the backdrop The Duke’s passion for the turf came from his father, the first Duke of Richmond, who rode at Newmarket aged fourteen, and his grandfather, King Charles II, who rode, set out the rules, and rebuilt the royal Palace at Newmarket. Until the very early nineteenth century, race meetings at Goodwood were private affairs, organised between the Dukes of Richmond and their friends and neighbours. In 1801, a private meeting held by the third Duke of Richmond for the Sussex Militia prompted a change. The meeting’s success drove the third Duke to hold the first public meeting the following year. This saw an exciting head-to-head between Cedar, owned by the third Duke, and Rebel, who belonged to the future King George IV. Rebel was victorious! From then on, the Goodwood meeting took place every summer, becoming a firm fixture in the racing calendar. The fourth Duke of Richmond introduced the Goodwood Cup in 1812, and the fifth Duke of Richmond, influenced by his great friend Lord George Bentinck, threw resources into the racecourse, including major earthworks in 1829 to extend the racecourse to the foot of the Trundle. Innovations included the pre-race parade of horses and public saddling, designed to hinder the skulduggery that went on behind the scenes and with which the sport was rife. From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ – as the press dubbed the meeting – became a highlight of the English summer season. King Edward VII, who attended every year, famously described it as ‘a garden party with racing tacked on’ and helped relax the dress-code from the more formal morning coats and top hats to straw hats and lounge suits. The King also exhibited his colourful wardrobe, on one occasion matching a pink shirt with lavender gloves. The meeting became the place to debut new styles, and for women, show off the latest gowns and hats. For everyone, Goodwood became the final fling of the season before all departed for Cowes Regatta on the Isle of Wight or the Highlands of Scotland. For much of its early history, racing took place over three consecutive days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), with Tuesday being added later. Under the tenth Duke of Richmond, Saturday racing was introduced and the race programme enlarged from four to twenty days across the season. Today, Goodwood is rightly hailed as the most beautiful racecourse in the world and the place where many of the greatest racehorses have battled it out on the top of the South Downs.
Clementine de la Poer Beresford, Curator of the Goodwood Collection
Racing in Goodwood Park, 1740s, is the earliest surviving depiction of racing taking place on the Goodwood Estate. It shows the second Duke of Richmond, dressed in a fine blue knee-length coat, embellished with gold brocade thread, surveying the scene. Sarah, Duchess of Richmond stands to the right of him, and in the background is the spire of Chichester Cathedral.

Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

The exceptional AL GHADEER has been the highest rated European Arabian of his generation the last two seasons and is now the highest rated Arabian in the World. Was the first four-year to score when winning this last year, and then went on to win the Qatar Arabian World Cup on Arc weekend and the HH The Amir Sword in Qatar in February to become only the second horse to secure the Doha Triple Crown series. Well clear of the field on ratings, this looks an easier task than in 2023. Al Shaqab will be hoping to complete a one-two-three with the Group 1PA winner Afjan and well-travelled Al Wakrah, though Al Zeer could spoil that wish.

Race Summary
FairAngellicadiditwellwhenscoringcomfortablyover7fatDeauvilleandRichardHughes’ progressive filly warrants the utmost respect on the back of that performance. That said, she may have to play second fiddle to JABAARA. Roger Varian’s charge lost nothing in defeat when beating all bar Porta Fortuna over a mile in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket and, with her sights lowered, she could be tough to stop. This step up in trip looks an interesting moveforRaqiyaand,alongwithFrench1000Guineasrunner-upKathmandu,shecompletes the shortlist.

Race Summary
Punters will need to be in a forgiving mood to side with FRANCISCO’S PIECE but it may pay to do so. He was last seen finishing down the field when upped to 6f for the first time in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, but he had looked a colt of considerable ability when running away with a Chantilly Listed race prior to that and gets the vote to resume his improvement. Aesterius impressed when winning the Dragon Stakes comfortably at Sandown and is feared most. Vingegaard, narrowly denied in the Super Sprint at Newbury, is also respected

TODAY ’S FEATURE
qatar sussex stakes
The jewel in the crown of the Qatar Goodwood Festival with a prize fund of £1 million, the Qatar Sussex Stakes is firmly established as one of the pre-eminent all-aged contests of the European Pattern, routinely attracting many of the top milers in training.
First run in 1841 as a sprint, the Qatar Sussex Stakes has seen several major changes in the intervening years and since it was opened to up to horses aged three-year-olds and upwards in 1974, it has further evolved to become Goodwood’s race of champions.
The roll of honour boasts Royal winners in King Edward VII’s 1909 Derby hero Minoru, and again in 1954 when Landau won sporting the colours of Queen Elizabeth II. While Toranado in 2005 gave the Festival’s Qatari backers the first of two victories in the colours of Qatar Racing, Lightning Spear followed up in 2018.
Frankel wrote his own piece of Goodwood history in 2012 by becoming the first horse to achieve back-to-back Sussex Stakes victories and followed many of the best milers in recent years - Canford Cliffs (2010), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002), Giant’s Causeway (2000), Aljabr (1999), Zilzal (1989), Warning (1988), Soviet Star (1987), Chief Singer (1984), and Kris in 1979.
Frankel started at odds of 1/20 in 2012 and while the price was not as short, the hype behind last year’s winner, Paddington, was almost on a par.
Bidding for his fourth consecutive Group 1 success under Ryan Moore, the Aidan O’Brien Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes and Coral Eclipse winner was forced to dig deep. He had to beat off a late challenge from Facteur Cheval to maintain his unbeaten three-year-old record.
It will take a similar high-quality performance from the winner of today’s Group 1 highlight to earn a place on the race’s distinguished roll of honour.
