Family Fun Welcome to the second day of our August Bank Holiday Weekend presented by NOW, where traditional family entertainment combines with top-class racing to create a memorable day on the Downs. There is something to appeal to every member of the family at Goodwood today, from a traditional fairground featuring a carousel, big wheel, and chair-o-plane, to donkey rides and a petting zoo. Today’s competitive card features no fewer than three Group contests among the seven-race programme. The most valuable being the Group 2 Tote Celebration Mile, which has been dominated by an illustrious role of honour in recent years. The popular, Beat The Bank, and talented miler Lightning Spear were both high-profile winners of the race before James Doyle guided Century Dream to success last year. Fillies take centre stage in the £60,000 Tote Prestige Stakes, a race that has provided a reputable springboard for top level horses. Isabella Giles enjoyed a fruitful season before claiming this in 2020. For a third successive year, the Tote March Stakes will be run in memory of the late John Dunlop, a former member of the Goodwood Board of Directors who twice won the Group 3 contest, first in 1972 with Scottish Rifle and again twenty years later with Rain Raider. The Yorkshire-trained, Subjectivist, proved a force to be reckoned with dominating last year’s renewal and winning by 15 lengths before claiming the Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan. Our thanks go to NOW who are today’s presenting partner, and the Tote who are our official betting partner, in addition to the Trustees of the European Breeders’ Fund. I hope you enjoy this afternoon’s racing and will be able to join us for the third and final day of our Bank Holiday meeting tomorrow.

The Duke of Richmond & Gordon Chairman, Goodwood Racecourse

Torvi got off the mark at the second time of asking and he’s probably the most solid bet in this juvenile contest. Willoughby Bay is probably best of the rest but she’ll have to step up a fair bit on her Lingfield second. TORVI

IN MEMORY OF

John Dunlop John Dunlop, who sent out more than 3,500 winners from his Arundel stables in West Sussex, was a man who embodied the spirit of Goodwood, Dunlop was crowned Champion Trainer in 1995 and sent out a total of 10 British Classic winners, including two Epsom Derby victories with Shirley Heights (1978) and Erhaab (1994). A previous Director of Goodwood Racecourse, John enjoyed nearly 200 winners here, starting with Storm Bird taking the 1967 New Ham Stakes and including one of his career highlights when the Pat Eddery-ridden Posse landed the 1980 Sussex Stakes. In addition to these successes, John trained Sheikh Mohammed’s first Group race winner here at Goodwood when Hatta won the Molecomb stakes in 1977.

‘This place is close to my stable and close to my heart. I have raced all over the world and I think it is the most beautiful racecourse in the world.’ John Dunlop

He’s got 10lb to find on official ratings but Classic Lord could take a step forward here. Connections obviously think highly of him, given his St Leger entry, and we really like the way he won at Sandown. A strong traveller, he looks to have a touch of class about him and could mix it at this level. Nagano possibly wants it softer so that leaves Dancing King as the one to beat. CLASSIC LORD

2020 WINNER: CENTURY DREAM (IRE) 6 9 4 James Doyle 11-4 (Simon & Ed Crisford) 6 ran Duke Of Hazzard looks like a cracking each-way bet. He’s three from five at Goodwood and ran a belter in the Strensall Stakes last time. Back down to a mile, he’ll be even better here and should be able to bag at least a place. He thrives when there’s a really strong gallop to aim at and he should get that here with Brentford Hope and Benbatl likely to carve out the running. DUKE OF HAZZARD

2020 WINNER: SENSATIONAL 5 9 9 Oisin Murphy 3-1F (William Knight) 9 ran Zulu Girl looks the obvious pick here but I’m going to chance Sky Power. He’s been a consistent performer for the Balding yard having placed on his first four outings before getting off the mark last time out in November. The rest of these are much more exposed and I’m hopeful there’s still some improvement to come from this one. He also comes into the race fresh, whereas others have had a busy time of late. RACE SEVEN

Race Result

Orin Swift is only 1lb higher than when winning here back in April and can run another big race. Placed here off 85 over 2m, Jonathan Portman’s 7yo should be staying on at the business end and looks a good bet to bag a place. Don’t Ask Me Again is the one they all have to beat and will be suited by this step up in trip after going close at Newmarket last time. DONTASKMEAGAIN
