BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Look out for the charity Racing to School today; you shouldn’t miss them as they will be leading a group of local pupils and their teachers through every corner of the racecourse for an action-packed day of fun challenges and discovery. The charity works nationwide with over 250 schools, running 370 events for around 15,000 young people this year – at UK racecourses, trainers’ yards and studs. They deliver free, outdoor activity days to support the learning and to boost the self-confidence of children aged nine and above. Racing to School uses racing venues as unique, fast-moving classrooms full of opportunities to practise and improve subjects like maths, literacy and problem-solving. The charity is only able to support young people’s education through the kind donations it receives.

PLAY SMARTER

PLENTY IN THE TANK looked a useful prospect when landing a Chepstow bumper a year ago and is taken to follow up on his return for new trainer Olly Murphy. The fact Duc de Bourbon was prominent in the betting on both bumper starts suggests he’s thought capable of better than he was able to show and he rates a possible threat. Irish bumper winner Laureldean Cross is also respected.

LAST TIME AT FAKENHAM

Fakenham RACECOURSE

Friday 13th March 2020

Racing returned to Fakenham for the opening fixture of the 2020/21 National Hunt season with a competitive card on good ground.

On a fine day, Harry Reed and Neil Mulholland got off to a flying start with victory of The Twisler in the Watch Fakenham Replays On attheraces. com Conditional Jockeys’ Selling Handicap Hurdle. Always prominent and disputing the lead with eventual fourth Kapdad, The Twisler put in a fine round of jumping and maintained his high cruising speed over the two mile trip to win decisively, winning by eight lengths at the line from Skeaping and Kevin Brogan back in second, with a further three lengths to Raashdy and Lewis Stones back in third. The winner was back in the winners enclosure for the first time since January 2019 when winning at Wincanton, and this confidence boosting win should see him come back into form. There was an upset in the Sky Sports Racing Mares’ Novices’ Handicap

Chase, as chasing debutant Jubilympics overturned strong favourite Bit On The Side to make a winning debut over the larger obstacles for Emma Lavelle and James Bowen. A very smart hurdler, this was an impressive performance from the mare and off her handicap mark it’d be no surprise to see her go in again soon.

Favourite backers were never troubled in the next, with Here Comes Johny proving much the best in the Champions Day On Sky Sports Racing “National Hunt” Maiden Hurdle. Aidan Coleman had his mount travelling very strongly indeed throughout the contest, and his class became evident as the pair cleared away to record an 11-length victory, seeing off the Paul Nicholls-trained Switch Hitter under Harry Cobden. This victory marked the beginning of the new retained partnership between Aidan Coleman and Olly Murphy, with many more successes for the combination expected sooner rather than later. The pair were out of luck in the next race however, which saw outsider of the field Wolf Of Windlesham clear away in fine style to win the Breeders’ Cup On Sky Sports Racing Novices’ Chase. Favourite Young Wolf had plenty of chasing experience but couldn’t put it to use under Jonjo O’Neill, and it was Ciaran Gethings who guided his mount home in front by 11 lengths to give the Stuart Edmunds-trained horse a winning chasing debut. The O’Neill’s were in luck in the next though, with Carys’ Commodity overcoming top weight to win the

Champions Day Form Study On attheraces.com/Ascot Handicap Hurdle. The 4/1 favourite looked the winner at every post and cleared away by fourteen lengths to win as easily as the rider liked. Now raised 12 pounds by the handicapper, he’s unexposed but will find life tougher of his revised mark. James Bowen recorded a second winner on the card in the Download The At The Races App Handicap Chase, lifting Sir Jack Yeats to an unlikely success in the three mile chase. Only a neck separated him and fellow doubleseeking rider Ciaran Gethings on board Hepijeu, but the winner was game and saw off the late challenge to win the race. Brian Ellison and Danny Cook made the trip to Fakenham worthwhile when Cormier won the final race, the Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Novices’ Hurdle. Another fine winner, he defied keenness to win by five and a half lengths over Medalla De Oro and Doukarov back in second and third.

PLAY SMARTER

VINNIE’S GETAWAY isn’t really bred to come into his own until tackling this sort of trip so the fact he’s been able to show plenty of ability around 2m reflects well on him and he can strike for a stable which does so well here. Stubborn Logic is a threat having gone close at Wincanton, while Buck Bravo had an excuse last time and is also respected with Jack Tudor taking 5lb off.

A case can be made for all four of these but MICK PASTOR had the best form over hurdles and this free-going sort could prove an exciting recruit to the 2m novice chasing ranks for his top yard. Gaelik Coast ended last term firmly on the up over hurdles so this winning pointer is much respected, while both Timetochill and Imperil are no forlorn hopes either in an intriguing novice chase.

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

JACKSON HILL stayed on well only to be denied by one that had the run of things at Plumpton recently and, provided there’s a solid gallop for him to aim at, he’s fancied to belatedly open his account.
