SUMMER EVENING RACING

FOLLOWED BY A LIVE DJ SET FROM PAT SHARP THURSDAY 29 JULY 2021 OFFICIAL RACECARD £3

BEST DRESSED THROUGH THE DECADES

Are you tonight’s best dressed racegoer? We are looking for the very best in fashion Through the Decades! Join us at the Winners Circle at 7.20pm where we will be handing out prizes for our best dressed racegoers!

EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE WELCOMES YOU

A warm welcome to Epsom Downs this evening for six exciting races, followed by a live DJ set of dance music 'Through the Decades' from DJ Pat Sharp. Two of our races this evening, the British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (7.05) and the British EBF Fifinella Fillies' Handicap (7.35) are sponsored by the European Breeders Fund, who support over 600 Flat races a year run for EBF qualified horses, all carrying enhanced prize money. We would like to thank the EBF for their generous contributions. Sadly we said goodbye recently to a great friend and supporter of Epsom Downs, Don Churston. Don was one of the leading owners in the town over the last 30 years and had many winners here, including Premier Night and Fair Value, who was placed in The Dash. Don was Chairman of the racing charity in Epsom, which has now merged with Racing Welfare. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. We are delighted to be able to welcome spectators here without restrictions on capacity, but we would ask all attendees this evening to read the advice later in this racecard, which explains what we can all do to safeguard each other and to follow the current government guidance whilst on course. We wish all the horses and their connections the best of luck and hope that you have a wonderful time with us here at Epsom Downs. SIMON DURRANT General Manager Epsom Downs Racecourse

The Jim Boyle-trained pair DOLPHIN VISTA and Angels Roc make most appeal. SIR DAVID PROSSER TROPHY TO BE AWARDED TO MOST SUCCESSFUL EPSOM TRAINER

The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2021 racing season. The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020. Wins at all racecourses across the country count towards the trophy and Simon Dow leads the way with 18 winners so far. Jim Boyle is his closest challenger with 13 winners and Brett Johnson lies in third place with 12 winners. Standings as of 27th July 2021. Trainer

The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2021 runs from 5th November 2020 to 4th November 2021. Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future. ROSALIND SMITH

‘FATMA EDWARD SMITH’ 26th August 1943 – 15th March 2019 Lesley Fox and I first met Ros in the Winter of 1983 when we were working for English trainers in the South of France, based at the racetrack in Cagnes sur Mer. Ros spoke fluent French and became our guide for the Winter, adrift as we were in this unique Mediterranean town nestling in the foothills of the French Alps. Ros knew all the best places to eat and best of all, she had a car! We quickly adapted to our new lifestyle under her guidance and we became accustomed to doing the horses in the morning and then spending some of the days touring this historic area, going skiing, visiting the perfume factories, the local vineyards and of course explore the historic coast line from the exuberances of Cap Ferrat to the intricacies of Antibes. Ros was also an excellent chef and throughout the nearly 40 years I knew her, she created amazing recipes for many occasions. She was very cultured and had strong views of her own on world matters on which she could speak with authority. Her father was a successful businessman and she travelled the World with him in the 60s and 70s when international travel was much less available than it is today. As well as all that experience she gained from this, I think it also encouraged her to develop a nomadic lifestyle and she lived in the South of France, Johannesburg in South Africa, when it was a scary place to live for a single lady, finally settling in Cairo where she married and remained until she passed away in the Military Hospital there on Cheltenham Gold Cup day in 2019. Over the last 20 years Ros would often come and stay with me in Epsom and Lesley in Lambourn and we would celebrate and remember many of our adventures. Spending time with Ros was always a privilege but also something you had to make time for! When she left I always felt I had learnt something more about the World. Ros spent much of her later life working in the translation business as she was fluent in many languages and started to learn Arabic in her sixties. She was also very interested in Art and I have many of her paintings in my house of favourite horses and pets although Ros painted important racedays that she remembered from being there, particularly at the Parisien tracks. Ros was also a keen Archaeologist and was credited for discovering one of the oldest humanoid skulls ever on a dig in South Africa. Lesley and I were Ros’ Executors and it was Ros’ wish that her estate should be left to a Charity of our choice. Ros was passionate about horse racing and the people who work in the industry. In fact for a while Ros worked for one of the Trotting trainers in Cagnes . By entrusting Racing Welfare with her legacy this donation has been ring fenced to specifically benefit the Epsom racing community in the form of accommodation for those working with the horses. An appropriate memorial to Ros will be created once any project is completed but she would be pleased to know that her legacy lives on. Lesley and I regularly raise a glass to her acknowledging what an amazing life she lead and how much she achieved. Indeed everyone who knew her is richer in life for having done so. PLAY SMARTER

MILITRY DECORATION lost out only narrowly to an improver at Sandown last week, so makes obvious appeal from the same mark. Magna Moralia remains one to bear in mind having not been seen to best effect at Hamilton last time, while useful hurdler Historic Heart could potentially be well handicapped returning to this code.

PLAY SMARTER

Having found only a well-handicapped horse too strong at Lingfield, PRINCE ROCK did too much too soon at Brighton, so can be forgiven that run. Back from a break, he could be the way to go at likely rewarding odds, with hat-trick seeking veteran Mythical Madness and Newton Jack feared most.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
