The Curragh SATURDAY 21ST AUGUST

Featuring

The Galileo Irish EBF Futurity Stakes (Group 2) & Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes (Group 2) 1

WOULD LIKE TO THANK

THE NIARCHOS FAMILY

FOR THEIR SPONSORSHIP OF THE GROUP 2 ALPHA CENTAURI DEBUTANTE STAKES 2

Welcome to the third of our Curragh August Festival of Racing. We have had two great meetings so far and this evening’s looks like another great meeting. The card features eight races featuring two great Group 2 contests for two-year-olds, the Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes and the Galileo Irish EBF Futurity Stakes. Sponsorship makes an invaluable contribution to racing as it supports the prize fund, which is so important to the owners, without whom, there would be no sport. We are very fortunate to have great sponsors at the Curragh and this evening’s tow principal races are sponsored by Coolmore Stud and the Niarchos Family, two long standing friends of ours. This evening the Niarchos Family are sponsoring for the for the first time. The Niarchos colours are famous and have been seen in the winner’s enclosure at The Curragh for many decades. This evening’s Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes remembers the Niarchos bred and owned filly who won the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas here before winning going on to win three other Group 1 contests. She was a very special filly. We are delighted that Alan Cooper can join us this evening and thank the Niarchos for their generous support. The Galileo Irish EBF Futurity Stakes honours a true champion that raced only once at the Curragh when he won the Budweiser Irish Derby in great style. On that day, he was completing the English Irish Derby double before going on to win the King George at Ascot. While his achievements on the track were excellent, it was at stud that he really came into his own. Galileo has been a phenomenal stallion whose influence on the stud book will last forever. Unfortunately, Galileo died earlier this year and it is very fitting that we now have a race to remember him at the Curragh, where he really showed his class on that day in June 2001. Coolmore also sponsor the Coolmore Arizona Irish EBF Maiden and we thank them for their great partnership with the Curragh. The other races are sponsored by the Irish Stallion Farms EBF, DMG Media Group and TRI Equestrian. These are valued long standing partners of ours and we thank them for their continued support. We would ask you to support our sponsors whenever you can. We are delighted to be able to acknowledge the work of Relay For Life this evening which over the years has brought families, friends, colleagues and neighbours together to support the work of the Irish Cancer Society and has also generated very positive support from the local community For those of you reading this through our digital race card, I hope that you will enjoy the racing, either on TV or by following it through our social media channels. This evening’s racing is being cover by Racing TV so there is no reason to miss out on the action. While we are disappointed not to have more than 500 attendees here, we look forward to welcome greater numbers back before too long, hopefully for the Longines Irish Champions Weekend on the 11th and 12th September Ticket are not on sale yet but please visit www.irishchampionsweeekend.ie to register your interest and be the first in the queue to receive ticket & event updates. Thanks again for all your support of the Curragh, we really appreciate it. I hope you enjoy the racing and once again a big thank you to all our sponsors for their continued support. Kind regards, PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

CURRAGH COMMENT Solid claims can be made for most of the runners in this field, with RHEA MOON narrowly preferred to land the spoils after finishing third on debut. The daughter of Starspangledbanner showed signs of inexperience on debut, but will have learnt plenty from that experience and gets the nod to land the spoils for an in-form trainer. HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. WINNER OF THE 2019 DEBUTANTE STAKES

28

29

Winner of four of her nine starts, including a Group 2 and Group 1, Alpine Star hails from an exceptional Niarchos family and is a half-sister to Alpha Centauri. Placed third behind Love on debut at Leopardstown, she broke her maiden at Galway and followed that up with a win in the Group 2 Debutante Stakes at the Curragh on her final juvenile start. Her three-year-old reappearance saw her win the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, before finishing a close second in her next three starts, all of which came in Group 1 events in France where she only found Fancy Blue, Palace Pier and Tarnawa too strong.

CURRAGH COMMENT SWAN BAY made a highly promising debut when a fast-finishing second at this track earlier in the month and is given the edge as he moves up in trip. Duke De Sessa also expected to go well after shaping nicely when third in a Galway maiden while Anchorage, who was just in front of him at Ballybrit, is one of two runners for Aidan O’Brien and having posted a useful level of form on both of his starts, is also worth considering.

THE ALPHA CENTAURI DEBUTANTE STAKES The Debutante is the fillies equivalent of the Futurity Stakes and it has held Group 2 status since 2004. Since its distance was changed from six to seven furlongs 25 years ago it has had spells at Leopardstown and the Curragh and it has been staged at the Curragh every year since 2010. It is the key trial for September’s Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes while eleven of the last 20 winners have gone on to win at Group 1 level. Since the emergence of Ballydoyle as a racing powerhouse, the Debutante is a race they have dominated. Aidan’s first success came in 1994 with Glouthaune Garden, and Aidan has used this race as a key trial for his most promising two-year-old fillies. The back to back successes of Family Tradition, aptly named, and Photogenic in 1996 and 1997 came under Christy Roche and Seamie Heffernan respectively, and although Aidan had to wait another six years before winning the race again, he did so in style with Necklace under Mick Kinane. He made it three years on the bounce with Silk And Scarlet and Rumplestiltskin in 2004 and 2005 but regained the race in 2009 with Lillie Langtry (dam of Minding and this year’s Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Empress Josephine) and again landed it with a special filly in 2011 with Maybe under son Joseph O’Brien. Joseph followed that success up by riding Tapestry to victory in 2013, Ballydoyle in 2015 before handing the reigns over to brother Donnacha, who did the steering aboard Magical in 2017. Outside of the O’Brien reign isn’t the only story of the Debutante, with many other famed training names saddling winners. Dermot Weld trained Low Key Affair to victory under Mick Kinane in 1993, with Dance Design following up for the pair two years later. Pat Smullen guided home Saranac Lake to success in 2001 and again won the race in 2007 under Campfire Glow.

38

In recent years we have witnessed a series of top class fillies land the Debutante. Rhododendron, subsequent Fillies’ Mile, Prix de l’Opera and Lockinge winner, won the race under Seamie Heffernan in 2016, with stablemate Magical, subsequent double Tattersalls Gold Cup and Irish Champion Stakes winner, following up a year later. Kevin Prendergast trained Skitter Scatter to victory in 2018 with Alpine Star landing the 2019 renewal for the Niarchos Family under Shane Foley. A well-related and smart filly, Alpine Star was imperious in victory, beating a strong field which included the talented Love. Last year the race returned to the O’Brien family, with Joseph saddling Pretty Gorgeous to give Shane Crosse a breakthrough win. See how the race unfolded with the replay below.

GALILE 46

1998-2021

47

“Perfection” was the one-word headline on the front page of the Racing Post following Galileo’s scintillating Epsom Derby success. It could not have been more apt. 48

As a son of Sadler’s Wells and David Tsui’s Arc heroine Urban Sea, a weight of anticipation had accompanied Galileo from the time he was foaled at Coolmore. On his only start at two he sauntered to a 14-length success at Leopardstown. By the time Derby Day 2001 dawned, Sadler’s Wells had already been champion sire ten times, but there was one glaring omission from the great stallion’s stud record: Epsom’s blue riband. Galileo rectified that situation in no uncertain fashion, gliding to a 3½-length success over the 2,000 Guineas winner Golan in the second-fastest Derby time ever. This also provided Aidan O’Brien with the first of his record number of Derby winners. A lap of honour for Galileo followed at the Curragh in the Irish Derby prior to a battling display in besting five-year-old Fantastic Light in the King George. Given that Galileo was to become the greatest sire in the modern era, it is remarkable to think that there was only one stakes-winning two-year-old – the John Gosden-trained Washington Singer Stakes scorer Innocent Air - in his first crop. However that first crop would go on to include no less than 13 stakes winners. Marguerite Weld’s homebred Nightime opened the Classic floodgates by capturing the 2006 Irish 1000 Guineas while Sixties Icon led home a 1-2-3 for his sire in the St Leger, run that year at York. Back in third that day was Red Rocks, who signed off that year by taking the Breeders’ Cup Turf. It was very fitting that Galileo’s very first winner Heliostatic was bred, owned and trained by Jim Bolger given the overall influence the master Coolcullen handler had on the early stages of Galileo’s career. Bolger was also breeder/owner/trainer of the unbeaten Champion 2-year-old of 2006 Teofilo, breeder of the runaway 2007 Irish Derby winner Soldier Of Fortune, and trainer of Galileo’s first Epsom Derby winner New Approach already a Champion two-year-old.

49

THE COOLMORE GALILEO IRISH EBF FUTURITY STAKES The Futurity is one of Ireland’s premier two-year-old colt’s races. It has held Group 2 status for the last 18 years and has been run over its current trip of seven furlongs since 1997. It is Ireland’s premier prep race for the Group 1 National Stakes which takes place over the same course and distance the following month and eleven of the last 20 Futurity winners have gone on to win at least once at Group 1 level including 2020 winner Mac Swiney. Back in the 80’s and 90’s if you wanted to find the winner of the race one key trend shone through - Christy Roche. He won back to back renewals in 1980 and 1981 with Benefice and Anfield before guiding St Jovite to victory for Jim Bolgger in 1991. Bolger supplied Roche with another winner in 1993 with Cois Na Tine before riding his final winner of the race in 1997 onboard Impressionist for Aidan O’Brien. Impressionist became Aidan’s first winner of the race, and he followed up with a series of impressive training performances in the years to come. Giant’s Causeway in 1999 gave Mick Kinane his fourth winner of the race and was onboard Hawk Wing and Van Nistelrooy for their wins in 2001 and 2002 respectively. Oratorio and Horatio Nelson won back to back renewals in 2004 and 2005, with Jim Bolger getting in on the action in the following two years with the wins of classy duo Teofilo and New Approach. 2011 and 2012 saw another trainer land back to back renewals, with this time Jessica Harrington the trainer of Pathfork and Dragon Pulse.

This classic racing memory was brought to you by

Giant’s Causeway holds off Kalanisi to win the Juddmonte International 2000

The O’Brien domination was back with a vengence though in 2013, with Joseph riding War Command and Gleneagles to victory, with the win of Herald The Dawn in 2015 separating two periods of O’Brien dominance. 2016 saw Churchill win on route to being the Champion Two-Year-Old, with Rostropovich following up a year later - a first win in the race for Ryan Moore.

50

Subsequent Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck landed the 2018 race, with Armory making it three in a row for Moore and O’Brien in 2019. 2020 though saw the familiar Bolger colours return to the winners enclosure, with the talented Mac Swiney winning the race in a fine finish under Kevin Manning. He went on to win the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas as a three-year-old before embarking on a three-year-old campaign at the highest level which has seen him contest both Derbies and the Juddmonte International. Although he was the outsider of the field in last year’s renewal, see how Mac Swiney landed a memorable victory for connections with the race replay below.

It soon became apparent that Galileo worked with faster mares more effectively than his sire. Successfully crossing fast mares such as Meow (dam of Churchill and Clemmie), You’resothrilling (dam of Gleneagles, Marvellous, Happily and Joan Of Arc), Margot Did (dam of Magic Attitude) and Laddies Poker Two (dam of Winter) are among the cases in point. and of course for Juddmonte, the decision to send their listed-winning sprinter Kind reaped the ultimate reward in Frankel. Frankel is one of 20 sons of Galileo to sire Group 1 winners with others including brilliant Derby winner and World Champion Three-Year-Old Australia. As well as excelling as a racehorse, sire and sire of sires, Galileo is an outstanding broodmare sire. European Champions like St Mark’s Basilica, Sottsass & U S Navy Flag are all out of his daughters, as are Guineas winners Night Of Thunder, Saxon Warrior & Magna Grecia along with Oaks winners Qualify and Snowfall. 54

RACE FIVE

It is hard to see past the obvious chances of POINT LONSDALE, who is unbeaten and will look to cement his place at the head of the ante-post market for next season’s 2000 Guineas. His three starts so far have seen him score with the minimum of fuss, culminating in a three-length success in the Group 3 Tyros Stakes last time out. Manu Et Corde looks interesting for Jim Bolger, who won this last season, and he will be running on late over this trip, while Point Gellibrand is unlucky to be a maiden and could surprise a few.

Me Too Please is interesting on her handicap debut as a Grade 2 winner in bumpers, while Party House drops significantly in class, but KAZAKDARIA is preferred. Dermot Weld’s filly got the better of a 91-rated rival when opening her account at Leopardstown and a mark of 89 for her handicap bow may underestimate her.

WIN: KAZAKDARIA

DANGER: PARTY HOUSE

SUPPORTS Relay For Life is a 24 hour event which brings families, friends, colleagues and neighbours together to support the work of the Irish Cancer Society. It is a huge community based event where teams of supporters commit to keeping participants walking around a track or path for 24 hours. This track consists of candle bags sold by the teams and now dedicated to those who have survived cancer and those who have lost their battle to this disease and are now laid out in rows to form a rectangle. Cancer survivors, dressed in their purple t-shirts, open the relay and walk the first couple of laps followed by team members who will then maintain a presence for 24 hours. Team fundraising takes place during the build up to relay and continues with hundreds of other activities taking place throughout the 24 hours to create a wonderfully festive community led atmosphere. Cancer leaves a lot of pain and heartache within communities but it also provides the inspiration to ensure that those lost to cancer will not be forgotten, that those facing cancer will be supported and with the hope that one day cancer will be eliminated. It is the increasing number of cancer survivors evident at past relays that give hope to those undergoing treatment and others who at some stage may be informed that they have the disease. At Relay we celebrate our survivors, remember those who have lost the battle and now we fight back against cancer.

Remember a 24 hour TEAM event

to fight cancer! 69

CURRAGH COMMENT Heavenly Power finished in front of Notoriously Risky and Swift Flight at this venue two weeks ago over 5f and those three could be closely matched over the extra furlong in this contest. They look leading contenders as that could turn out to be a strong piece of form, however, a chance is taken on the debutant STAY LOCAL, who has an attractive pedigree and could be precocious based on her breeding. Carlton Banks is another newcomer to take note of as he has plenty of speed in his family and may also feature.

CURRAGH COMMENT LATIN FURY offered greater encouragement when fitted with a visor in a maiden at Cork, showing up well for a long way before tiring in the closing stages. The Willie McCreery-trained colt has the potential to improve now dropping in trip for his handicap debut and, on just his fourth start, looks capable of making a big impact in a competitive affair. Collective Power may be capable of building on an encouraging comeback run in that same Cork race, while Ever Rock is in good heart and looks set to get involved once again.
