WOULD LIKE TO THANK

THE HEIDER FAMILY

FOR THEIR SPONSORSHIP OF THE GROUP 3 HEIDER FAMILY STABLES ROUND TOWER STAKES 2

Welcome to the final evening of our Curragh August Festival of Racing. The racing has been great so far and this looks like being a fitting finale. Tonight, we will crown the inaugural winners of the DMG Media Challenge for the trainer and jockey with most success in the four August races that make up the series. The Leader Board is elsewhere in this race card. This has been a really interesting initiative and one we will continue into the future. We are delighted to welcome DMG Chief Executive Paul Henderson here this evening. The racing is always top quality in the Curragh and this evening is no exception. We have three Group 3 races, a premier handicap, a nursery, a maiden, an apprentice race and a handicap. You really couldn’t ask for more. I would like thank Cristina Patino, the owner of Snow Fairy, Scott Heider and his Family, Paddy Power, Bord Na Mona Recycling, DMG Media, TRI Equestrian, Manguard Plus who are our Security partner and the Irish Stallion Farms EBF for their generous sponsorship. These are all valued long standing partners of ours and we thank them for their continued support. Their support has been even more important than ever to us during Covid. We would ask you to support our sponsors whenever you can. While we are disappointed not to have more than 500 attendees here, we look forward to welcome greater numbers back before too long, hopefully for the Longines Irish Champions Weekend on the 11th and 12th September Ticket are not on sale yet but please visit www.irishchampionsweeekend.ie to register your interest and be the first in the queue to receive ticket & event updates. Today is my last meeting in the Curragh and I would like to thank everyone for all their support and encouragement over the past two years. I have really enjoyed my time here and look forward to coming back as a fan on a regular basis in the future. I would like to wish my successor Brian Kavanagh every success. Brian will arrive in November and Evan Arkwright will be Acting Chief Executive till then. I would like to say a special thanks to the Curragh Team who do such a good job and thanks them for all their support during my time here. The Curragh is the finest racing centre in the World with a very fine future to look forward to. Kind regards, PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien tends to run some of his smarter juveniles in this contest, most notably Saxon Warrior (2017) and Imperial Monarch (2011), and the Ballydoyle handler bids for an eighth success in a row with SWEDEN and Bluegrass. The latter already has racecourse experience and is likely to benefit from the extra furlong than he encountered here on debut, but the former boasts a nice middledistance pedigree, being out of a Ribblesdale winner, and is taken to make a winning debut. Enthrallment, Yashin and Explorers Way appeal most of the remainder.

FLAME OF TARA Today’s second race is named in honour of Flame Of Tara, who was a very good racehorse before becoming an extremely successful broodmare. Bred by Pat O’Kelly at Kicarn Stud in 1980, the filly was trained by Jim Bolger and won eight of her twenty-one starts including notable successes in both the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Pretty Polly Stakes here at the Curragh. She also ran once in the United States but was unplaced in the Yellow Ribbon Invitational before being retired to stud. In total, she produced thirteen named foals of which twelve were winners, but perhaps the most famous of her progeny was the brilliant filly Salsabil. She cost $800,000 as a yearling and from day one it was clear that she had plenty of talent. She won the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac as a juvenile before conquering just about all before her as a three-year-old. Victories in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and Oaks at Epsom were followed by success in the Irish Derby, where she became the first filly for ninety years to defeat the colts in that particular contest. She subsequently landed another Group 1 success in the Prix Vermeille before having her final start in the Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe. Just a few year later, Flame Of Tara produced Marju, a colt who won the Craven Stakes and the St James Palace and also finished second to Generous in the 1991 Epsom Derby. He has enjoyed success as a stallion, with the multiple Group 1 winning racemare Soviet Song perhaps the most successful of his progeny. The Curragh Racecourse is delighted to be able to continue to honour Flame Of Tara today.

THANK YOU The Curragh would like to thank Eva Bucher–Haefner’s Moyglare Stud for the generous sponsorship of the Stable Staff Canteen for the 2021 season.

PETER CAREY The Curragh is delighted to welcome Peter Carey, Chief Executive Kildare County Council, to the races this evening and thank him for his support of the racecourse. We all wish him a very happy retirement.

CURRAGH COMMENT There are some exciting juveniles on display in this contest and none more so than the sole debutant in the field, Lullaby, who has been thrown in at the deep end. The daughter of Galileo represents top connections and warrants plenty of respect, but she may find it tough to get the better of ALBULA, who was well on top at the line when landing the spoils at Naas on her first start. The Joseph O’Brientrained filly gets the nod, while She’s Trouble is an intriguing candidate stepping up to this trip.

CURRAGH COMMENT Solene Lilyette goes from strength to strength and seems sure to put up another bold performance from near the front, though there is a possibility this may prove a step too far for her. Champers Elysees is a class act at her best and is dropped in grade making her a major player once again, but three-year-olds have a great record and SHALE will find this company far easier to deal with than the two Group 1 races she contested in June.

THE HEIDER FAMILY

36

37

The Curragh would like to acknowledge the generous support of Scott Heider and his family today and celebrate their growing association with horse racing in Ireland. Scott Heider and his family has been involved with racing in Ireland for five years now. The history of the Irish horse is what initially drew them in and caused them to expand their racing operation from the States to Ireland. “It’s just been a fantastic experience for us. We love our partnership with Joseph O’Brien and we’ve been very fortunate to race some talented individuals on Irish racecourses the last few years including Agartha, Crossfirehurricane, A New Dawn, Take A Deep Breath and an American Pharoah filly named Pista. Horse Racing Ireland has been a pleasure to work with as they always seem to go out of there way to make sure our experience is quite special.” The Heider’s success has been marked with victories on some of racing’s biggest days. Their flagship horse, Crossfirehurricane, won on debut at Limerick and followed that up with three successive victories, notably in the Gallinule Stakes, which they sponsor. Recently, connections have unleashed Agartha, a Caravaggio filly who recently landed the Group 2 Debutante Stakes here at the Curragh. The talented Pista has also showcased her talent, progressing rapidly under the care

of Joseph O’Brien to take the Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown before following up in the Group 2 Park Hill at Doncaster. Her fine three-year-old season ended with a close second behind the smart filly Wonderful Tonight in the Group 1 Prix de Royallieu at Longchamp. “I began racing and breeding thoroughbreds with my father 25 years ago in The States. We’ve enjoyed some terrific times and been blessed with a number of high caliber horses including 2019 Grade I winner “Mia Mischief”. But there’s something extra special about racing in Ireland with it’s incredible history. I’ve enjoyed reading everything I can get my hands on the last few years starting with several biographies about the iconic Vincent O’Brien. I have to admit I’ve developed an appreciation I thought I’d never Cindy and Scott Heider with Keeneland’s Senior Vice President of SalesTony Lacy (on left) have for horse’s over the jumps! It’s safe to say, we’re here to stay racing in Ireland.” The Heider’s affiliation with the Curragh can be found through their welcome sponsorship of the Round Tower Stakes and the Gallinule Stakes, two significant races in the Irish racing calendar. 39

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE BOR

Race one of the series was won in superb style by Dean Curran and Pretty Rebel, who defied an extremely poor start to rally and win going away by half a length. Curran showed extraordinary tenacity to roust his mount along following a slow start and the pair latched on to the main group. Once in and around his rivals, Pretty Rebel stuck to the task and saw off favourite Ottawa Fire and Jamie Powell to win for trainer Gerard O’Leary.

CURRAGH COMMENT A chance is taken on the Michael Mulvany-trained THE BLUE PANTHER now dropping in trip. The three-year-old was highly impressive when last seen over a sprint distance, hammering his rivals in a minor event at Sligo in June and, having showed up well for a long way over 7f at Gowran Park on his latest start, he may be capable of scoring here. Pretty Boy Floyd has posted some useful efforts this year and looks set to make another bold bid, while Lord Dudley and Big Gossey can also get involved.

THE BORD NA MONA REC FUTURE STARS SERIES

The Bord Na Mona Recycling Apprentice Derby marked race two of the series, which was won by Luke McAteer onboard Jim Bolger’s Beyond Happy. A keen going sort, Beyond Happy was allowed to find his stride under McAteer and his mount was a willing partner who found himself in a comfortable lead after just a few furlongs. He plugged on well and faced challenges, but always looked comfortable under McAteer and the pair recorded a cosy length and a quarter victory over Nikita Kane and Allora Yeats back in second.

52

CYCLING

Q&A with Luke McAteer: Where are you from? Rathmullan, Donegal. Who do you work for? Jim Bolger. Did you always want to be a jockey? Yes, always loved horses and racing. Why did you decide to be a jockey? I did pony racing when I was younger and went to Mr Bolger’s when I turned 16. Biggest win of your career to date? The Eyrefield Stakes Group 3 on Flying Visit. Ambitions for the season? Lose my 5lb claim. Ambitions for the future? Lose my claim fully, hopefully ride nice horses in the big group races. Favourite thing about riding at the Curragh? Very fair track, best horse in the race nearly always wins Which jockey has been/is your biggest role model? I’ve got a lot of help from plenty senior jockeys mostly from Rory Cleary, Kevin Manning & Ronan Whelan. Best friend in the weighroom? Gavin Ryan Race you would love to win at the Curragh? Any off the Classics, preferably the Derby.

RACE SIX

CURRAGH COMMENT Dermot Weld’s unexposed quantity Crystal Black could be potentially ‘thrown in’ at the weights and has to be considered along with progressive seasonal debutant Carrytheone and the thriving filly Moddy Poddle under a 7lb penalty. However, the lightly-raced TOSHIZOU looks to have been given the ideal preparation and really caught the eye in defeat over C&D earlier this month (denied a clear run), suggesting he could take a lot of stopping if things drop right. Of those at bigger prices, Luke Short hasn’t been seen to best effect this year but might represent some value off a mark that remains workable.

CURRAGH COMMENT In a competitive-looking nursery handicap TUT TUT is fancied to follow up a recent win at Leopardstown, with the third from that race having come out and won since. Runner-up to subsequent Group 2 winner Velocidad on debut, Jessica Harrington’s filly clearly possesses lots of ability. Her biggest danger would look to be the hat-trick-seeking Malayan, who has displayed a fine attitude to win at both Galway and Roscommon. Howth relished the step up to a mile at Killarney and should be coming home strong here, while Swift One and Recurrent Dream complete the shortlist.

She will surely land a race of this nature soon and is taken to get the better of Fridtjof Nansen, who got within half a length of success at Galway last time. Parkers Hill has placed on his last two outings at Navan and Naas so cannot be left out of calculations here.
