The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 9

CURRAGH COMMENT Positive market vibes about Aidan O’Brien’s newcomer Giovanni Bellini would be ominous but he may appreciate further and the race-hardened NEO SOUL may have too much over this trip, even though his running-on effort at Naas last time suggests he too could want further. Ger Lyons’ other representative Sosallycanwait also commands respect judged on her two efforts so far, while My Eyes Adore You shaped nicely over 6f at Cork first time out without necessarily suggesting this drop back in trip will work to her benefit.

CHARLIE WELD

Charlie Weld was one of the most respected and successful dual purpose trainers of his generation. He was responsible for approximately 1000 winners during his training career which spanned 1950, 1960 and the early 1970s. Initially based close to the Phoenix Park, he later moved to Rosewell House on the Curragh where he enjoyed the majority of his success. The victory of Decies in the National Produce Stakes was one of his most notable flat wins but the performances of the ultra-consistent Farney Fox deserves special mention. The versatile performer not only was ridden to victory in the 1960 Irish Lincoln by TP Burns, but leading jump jockey Paddy Powell also rode the son of Archive into second place in the Champion Hurdle. Always a trainer with great foresight and ambition, he sent Mrs M Donnelly’s stable star to compete in the Washington DC International race and in so doing became the first Irish trainer to have a runner in what was then the world’s greatest international race. Other top class flat performers included 1963 Phoenix Stakes winner Right Strath and Wily Trout, who won the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot. Charlie also enjoyed tremendous success with some of his National Hunt performers. These included 1959 Galway Plate winner Highfield Lad and the brilliant young chaser Coniston, who won both the Champion novice chases at Punchestown and Fairyhouse. He was ridden both times by Joe Malone. Galway Hurdle winner Ticonderoga was another notable winner as he also landed the Galway Amateur Handicap for Charlie’s 15-year-old son Dermot!

24

MARGUERITE WELD

Originally from Kilsheelan in CountyTipperary, her love of horses was engendered quite early in her life and she started to ride from the age of 3 and experienced her first hunt at the age of 10 with the Waterford Hunt. Her father was a dairy farmer but also kept and trained horses. She went to school in the Ursuline Convent in Waterford and during holidays competed in showjumping at various shows. After school she worked for the Department of Agriculture in Naas. During the war years, she regularly won point-to-points with the Naas harriers. It is during this time she met Charlie Weld at a meet with the Kildare Hounds. After their marriage they moved to England when Charlie took out a trainers licence. After a few years, they returned to Ireland and based themselves close to the Phoenix Park during the 1950s. They subsequently moved to the Curragh to be based at Rosewell House and Charlie’s career went from strength to strength with his wife playing a very important role in that success. Breeding horses was a huge interest to her. Initially she owned Glenvale Stud in Carrick on Suir and following its sale, she purchased Pipers Hill Stud in Naas. She later moved to Springbank close to the Curragh where she bred many top class performers including Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow and Nightime winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She resided at Springbank until her death at the age of 98 in 2014.

THE WELD PARK STAKES The last pattern race for two-year-old fillies in the Irish calendar, this race commemorates Dermot Weld’s parents Charlie and Marguerite and it has been run at the Curragh since 1991. This Group 3 is gaining prominence as a key race for late blooming two-year-olds, with the seven furlongs of the Curragh a fine litmus test for Classic contenders and top class prospects in the making. A quick look down the roll of honour will highlight two names - Mick Kinane and John Oxx. The former won this race seven times in the saddle, the first being Lone Bidder in 1980 and the last Eva’s Request in 2007.

John Oxx

John Oxx gave Mick one of his wins with Arch Swing in 2006, and landed the race in 1994 with the classy mare Ridgewood Pearl under Johnny Murtagh, before Christy Roche took over in the saddle to land a memorable victory in the 1995 1,000 Guineas. In recent years, Coolmore have emerged as a dominating force, with a huge battalion of top-class two-year-olds. David Wachman trained Chintz and Chrysanthemum to win the race in 2008 and 2010 for Seamie Heffernan and Wayne Lordan respectively, and Aidan O’Brien has a fine record in this too. The master of Ballydoyle won this with Magical Dream in 2012, Qualify in 2014 Hermosa and Coolmore in 2015, all ridden by Joseph O’Brien. Ryan Moore was in the saddle for subsequent English 1,000 Guineas winner Hermosa’s success in 2018 (the race took place at Naas), before jockey-turned-trainer

26

Joseph O’Brien landed the race last year with New York girl under a fine ride by talented young rider Shane Crosse. The much missed Pat Smullen guided Eziyra to victory in 2016 for Dermot Weld which must not be forgotten about too! Despite Joesph O’Brien looked to have a strong hand again to repeat his success in 2019, the well-fancied Thinking Of You could only manage third, which left things wide open for the Noel Meade-trained Elysium to give Billy Lee a breakthrough success in this Group 3 contest. See below how the race unfolded with the replay below

CURRAGH COMMENT Placed at the top level on her most recent outing, and runner-up in a Group 2 prior to that, SUNSET SHIRAZ is a clear standout on form. Gavin Cromwell’s charge has her sights lowered here and she merits the utmost respect. Concert Hall wasn’t far behind the selection in the Moyglare and there could be more to come from this well-bred daughter of Dubawi. The shortlist is completed by Albula and Trevaunance.

CURRAGH COMMENT RULING is the clear form choice having raced in higher grades in his most recent outings, including a seven-length defeat in the Group 2 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. He ought to find this far easier pickings but he does take a significant drop in trip and will need to be at his best to come home in front. Unknown-quantity Tignanello is interesting and is bred to be decent but returns from over a year off, while Straight Talking showed plenty of promise on her debut and tries a hood for the first time. She is taken to break the maiden at the sixth time of asking, with the largely consistent Jeroboam looking best placed to chase her home. Plezantlysurprised has shown enough in his three outings to suggest he’s capable of being in the mix, while Carlton Banks is another to consider.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. RAA ATOLL TRIBUTE

36

Picked up for 200,000gns by China Horse Club, big things were always expected out of this beautiful son of Sea The Stars. Trained in Newmarket by John Gosden, Raa Atoll broke his maiden over one mile two furlongs as a three-year-old at Nottingham, and followed up with another success at Leicester, stepping up to one mile four furlongs. Following his impressive win in a pair of novices’, he was quickly switched to Pattern company, finishing fourth in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. His time in Britain soon came to a close, however, after the Princess Of Wales Stakes at Newmarket, he picked up by Luke Comer for just 30,000gns. 37

RAA ATOLL TRIBUTE

He became a instant success for owner and trainer Luke Comer when overturning the odds-on favourite in the Group 2 Comer Group International Oleander Rennan at Hoppegarten, his main claim to fame in his unfortunate short career. With an official rating of 110 after that success, he ran here 4 times here over staying trips (1m6f/2m), in Pattern company, with his best effort coming in the Group 2 Comer Group International Curragh Cup. Regretfully, he was put to rest after picking up a fatal injury in the same race a year later. Today, thanks to Luke Comer sponsoring the race, the Loughbrown Stakes will be named after his horse in remembrance.

Last year’s winner Dawn Patrol gave Aidan O’Brien his second win in this contest since it was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2017. Confirming promsie when third in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, he bounced back to form in the Loughbrown Stakes, following a string of below par performances to win a shade cosily from the talented mare Barrington Court. See how the action unfolded with the full race replay below.

CURRAGH COMMENT THE MEDITERRANEAN has been steadily progressing throughout this season and, after a career-best effort when third in the St Leger last time, the three-year-old looks poised to land his first victory since May. Lismore rates as the most immediate danger after readily dismissing her rivals at Sandown when last seen. The dual Irish St Leger winner, Search For A Song, has failed to fire so far this campaign but she is dangerous to dismiss.

CURRAGH COMMENT The three-year-old MOON DAISY has shown improved form since being fitted with blinkers, winning on two occasions, including when scoring in comfortable style at Fairyhouse on her most recent run. The daughter of Australia should have no problem dropping back in trip and makes plenty of appeal, with the recent Clonmel winner Excelcius also expected to go well as he returns to 1m4f. The veteran El Tren shaped with promise when fourth at Tipperary last month and has the potential to step up, while Machine Learner remains unexposed for this yard and looks capable of better having not had the rub of the green on his last two starts.

WIN: MOON DAISY

CURRAGH COMMENT RIOT has shown some promising signs since moving to Ireland and Johnny Murtagh’s charge now tackles 5f for the first time. He may not look the most likely candidate to excel at the minimum trip, but with a strong pace likely it would be no surprise to see him pick up the pieces late on. The lightly-raced Rough Diamond disappointed last time but if he can bounce back to form he would have a live chance, while the ultra-consistent Arnhem could be in the frame once again.

JOE McGRATH

RACE SEVEN

The Joe McGrath Premier Handicap pays tribute to one of the leading figures in Irish racing who died in 1966. He was one of the most influential figures in Irish politics and business and can also take a huge amount of credit for the success of the Irish racing industry today. He enjoyed plenty of racing success most notably with Arctic Prince who won the Epsom Derby in 1951.

CURRAGH COMMENT A competitive finale which serves up an enthralling rematch between Viareggio, Dickochea and Nectarine after the trio occupied the first three places in a similar event over 7f at Cork recently. A credible case could be made for all three on revised terms over an extra furlong, but the value here may like with Jim Bolger’s APPROACH TO LIFE. The daughter of New Approach has shown promise in three maidens over shorter trips in recent months and her opening mark looks exploitable.
