The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 9

CURRAGH TRAINER PROFILE Ken Condon Ken grew up in Ballyhea, Co Cork. His racing experience was gained across the globe with short stints at Coolmore, Haras de Fresnay Le Buffard in Normandy, Lanes End Farm in Kentucky, Neil Howard in Keeneland and finally 5 ½ years with John Oxx at Currabeg. He took out his trainers licence in 2002 and won the Irish 2000 Guineas in 2018 with Romanised. In 2018 he and his wife Paula purchased the historic Osborne Lodge where It has been lucky to its previous incumbents since James Dunne built it in 1897 with a roll call of 18 Irish classic winners, not to mention latterly through the highly successful tenure of the Hughes Family where big winners were common and includes Champion Hurdle and Grand National winners. Ken and Pauline hope to continue the classic legacy here and write their own 18 chapter in a rich and successful history.

CURRAGH COMMENT With few of the newcomers really standing out in this contest, THUNDER ECLIPSE and Giselles Ausie may end up proving a cut above their rivals, with the first-named narrowly getting the call. The son of Holy Roman Emperor was always travelling well when hacking up in a maiden at Naas last month and may once again be capable of giving weight and a beating to his opponents. Giselles Ausie made a highly promising start when winning at Navan earlier this month, despite conceding weight to her rivals, and looks a major threat to the selection, while Seeingisbelieving improved when third at Listowel earlier this week and can do best of the rest.

CURRAGH COMMENT An intriguing juvenile contest, but a chance is taken on NAVAGIO, who made a pleasing start to his racing career at Cork last month. That form has subsequently been boosted and he gets the vote to build on that performance here. Montenegro is one to consider on his racecourse debut and he holds an entry in the Group 1 Vertem Futurity Stakes at Doncaster next month. Married In A Fever, Nusret and Willesee are others to note in this field.

DANGER: MONTENEGRO

RACE TWO

WIN: NAVAGIO

THE ALAN SMURFIT MEMORIAL BERESFORD STAKES This race has always been a good marker for success. Since Sadler’s Wells took the 1983 renewal, we’ve seen thoroughbred giants win this on their way to big success. El Prado was victorious for Vincent O’Brien and Lester Piggott in 1981, before the Aidan O’Brien domination began with Johan Cruyff in 1996.

LEGENDARY WINNER

SADLER’S WELLS

In recent times, we’ve seen stars 1983 WINNER of the track come out in force for this race. Azamour took the 2003 renewal for John Oxx and Johnny Murtagh, with the superb Sea The Stars and St Nicholas Abbey winning back to back renewals in 2008 and 2009 respectively. In what was truly a golden age of racing, Casamento added to the already illustrious roll of honour and cemented his place in history. The domination of Aidan O’Brien since then is yet to be stopped. His representatives have took the each and every renewal of this race since 2010 and he bids to make it an astonishing 11 wins in a row here today. Recent successes for Ballydoyle have come in the Derrick Smith colours, with the talented grey, and future English St Leger winner, Capri landing the race in 2016. Subsequent English 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior took the race in fine style a year later, before the talented Japan capped three consecutive wins in the race last year for Ryan Moore, before Donnacha O’Briend ended his streak in 2019 when in the saddle of Innisfree.

28

Last year, the Aidan O’Brien domination continued, as he recorded his tenth success in a row in this contest with High Definition. After a steady start from the stalls, Seamie Heffernan was keen to take a strong hold on this talented Galileo colt, before begging to send out distress signals 3 furlongs out. Heffernan continued his drive and began to make solid headway 2 furlongs out, going into top gear inside the final furlong, and stayed on strongly to land the odds by just under a length. With another success in this Group 2 contest for Ballydoyle, could they add another to their impressive tally? To watch the full replay of the last year’s race, please click the video below.

THE SMURFIT FAMILY AND THE CURRAGH The Smurfit Family have enjoyed a successful association with The Curragh for many years, and in particular one of racing’s finest ever stayers. Known for his fine association with Dermot Weld, Dr Michael Smurfit enjoyed many successes on the racetrack, both on the flat and in the National Hunt sphere. At the Curragh in particular, the Gladness Stakes of 1988 marked the start of an era, with Mick Kinane guiding Careafolie to victory in the seven furlong Group 3 for Dermot Weld. Two of Dr Smurfit’s horses clashed in the 1991 Macdonagh Boland Stakes, a Listed race over seven furlongs, with the Jim Bolger-trained Ballyloop under Christy Roche getting the better of Pre-Eminent in the same colours for Dermot Weld and Mick Kinane. A few years later, Vintage Crop emerged. A victory in Newmarket’s Cesarewitchunder rider Walter Swinburn marked him as a stayer to follow, and he improved to win the 1993 Curragh Cup under Mick Kinane. A short break followed, before he made a promising return over a mile and a quarter and took a step forward to land the Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St Leger in 1993, beating Richard Hannon’s Assessor and Foresee back in second and third. A historic and ground breaking victory in the Melbourne Cup followed, before he returned to the Curragh for victory in a conditions race to prepare the talented stayer for a repeat victory in the feature St Leger. The victory did indeed follow under Mick Kinane, winning by a widening margin of three lengths to see off John Oxx’s Rayseka and Johnny Murtagh. The Smurfit silks were also carried to victory by talented mare Cheviot Amble, trained by Patrick Flynn. The tough mare was a multiple Listed winner, landing the Mooresbridge Stakes in heavy conditions in 1994 under John Egan. Humbel too was a smart horse for Dermot Weld, winning the 1995 Blandford Stakes (then a Group 2 over 11f and open to colts), and although Media Puzzle only won once at the Curragh, he too was a smart stayer in the hands of Dermot Weld, winning the 2002 Melbourne Cup under Damien Oliver. Michael’s son Tony has continued the family’s interest in horse racing with a number of horses currently in training with Johnny Murtagh including the Group 3-placed Pronouncement. We are delighted that Tony will be represented in the Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes today with Chicago Soldier.

ALAN SMURFIT

30 September 1942 – 13th September 2020 Alan passed away on 13th September 2020. Alan was a person who accomplished much in his life. He helped his brothers build the then Jefferson Smurfit Group to be a world leader in Paper and Packaging and ultimately spearheaded the Group’s move into Latin America. This organisation continues to be a highly successful part of the Smurfit Kappa Group today. Upon retirement, Alan put his talents into playing poker, eventually winning a World Championship Bracelet. He was renowned for his decency and kindness to people. He is dearly missed by his wife Guadeloupe and his children Peter, Alan and Ann. His passing has also left a void in the lives of his brothers Michael and Dermot and sister Barbara.

CURRAGH COMMENT Aidan O’Brien isn’t afraid to throw his juveniles into the deep end and it may pay dividends today with LUXEMBOURG. The son of Camelot won in good style on his debut and, although he hasn’t been seen since July, he gets the nod to keep his unbeaten record intact. Swan Bay readily dismissed his laboured rivals at Galway and the 110,00gns purchase rates the biggest danger. Manu Et Corde gave a good account when fifth in the Champion Juvenile Stakes last time out and the most experienced contender in the contest could take another step forward.

CURRAGH COMMENT MAGNIFFICO took a big step forward when second at this venue on his latest start and that looks good form in the context of this race, so he could be the one to beat in this contest. Wild Eyed Girl and It Might Be You look closely matched on their meeting at Naas and both shaped like they will appreciate the step up to 6f, so it would be no surprise to see them involved as well. Coumshingaun is another for the shortlist after an encouraging display at Fairyhouse.

VENTURA REBEL 2020 RENAISSANCE STAKES WINNER

46

Following on from Karl Burke’s successes in this race in 2017 and 2018 at Naas, due to redevelopment work here at The Curragh, Richard Fahey now adds his name as another from Britain to win this Group 3 contest. Fresh from a defeat in the Garrowby Stakes at York won by the Ed Walker-trained Starman, this talented colt showed marked improvement from that effort to produce a suprising win in the 2020 nenewal of the Renaissance Stakes. Held up towards the rear until halfway through this exciting contest, Declan McDonogh gave this horse a exquisite ride from the back. He began passing rivals two furlongs out, before eventually putting his rivals to bed inside the final furlong to win by half a length. See how the Ventura Rebel gained success with the replay below.

CURRAGH COMMENT Twilight Spinner is a fascinating contender on her stable debut for Joseph O’Brien having improved with each start when in the care of David O’Meara. She bolted up in Listed company at Haydock in May and has the makings of a very smart filly, but ART POWER sets a high standard and is hard to oppose. Tim Easterby’s colt is rated 8lb and upwards above these rivals and, stepping down from Group 1 level, his class will likely shine through. Power Under Me could also run well for the in-form Ger Lyons stable.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

RACE SIX

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT SHE’S IN THE GAME arrives in pursuit of a hat-trick and it would take a useful performance to stop her from achieving that feat. Despite being handed a 6lb rise for her recent Cork win, the consistent filly could continue her ascendancy returning to 7f. Ozymandis is the most unexposed runner in the field and, given his decisive victory on seasonal reappearance, the Ger Lyons-trained three-year-old rates the most immediate danger. Royal Pippen has failed to fire of late but this step down in trip may put him back on the right track.

THE BORD NA MONA RECY FUTURE STARS SERIES 56

The Bord Na Mona Recycling Apprentice Handicap marked race three of the series, which was won by Neve Bennett onboard Bill Farrell’s She’s In The Game. After breaking well from the stalls, She’s In The Game was allowed to find her stride and this small filly found herself in midfield through the first part of this seven furlong contest. She stayed on gamely after gaining the lead one furong out and faced a strong challenge all the way to the line, but always looked in control under Bennett to win by a short head. Dermot Weld’s Thaleeq was back in second.

YCLING 57

THE BO Q&A with Neve Bennett: Where are you from? Gloucestershire, England. Who do you work for? Apprentice Jockey to Darren Bunyan but I also ride out for Bill Farrell. Did you always want to be a jockey, if so why? I always had an interest in racehorses but didn’t want to be a jockey until I was about 16 and this was only because I attended the British Racing School. Why did you decide to be a jockey? As I fell in love with working with race horses and riding them at speed. Your first winner? My first winner was for Bill Farrell at The Curragh on a little filly called She’s In The Game. Ambitions for the season? Just to get as many rides and as much experience as possible. Ambitions for the future? Hopefully ride out my claim and keep getting rides. Favourite thing about riding at the Curragh? How fair the track is and the excellent facilities for the riders. Which jockey has been/is your biggest role model? It would have to be Josephine Gordon as when I first started working in a racing yard she was always there to give me tips and advice and I loved her style of riding . Best friend in the weighroom? I wouldn’t say I have a best friend in the way room as all the girls are amazing and we all have such a good laugh together, but my go to girl would have to be Siobhan Rutledge. Race you would love to win at the Curragh? The Apprentice Derby.
