Welcome to the second meeting of our August Festival of Racing. The card features eight races this evening featuring the Comer Group International Irish St Leger and the historic Royal Whip Stakes, celebrating its 200th anniversary, which will be sponsored by Fitzdares for the first time. We would like to thank Comer Group International for their generous support of the Curragh. Luke and Brian Comer are fantastic supporters of not only the Curragh, but of the whole Irish Racing Industry. The winner of the race will receive a free entry to the Comer Group International Irish St Leger taking place as the feature race on Day 2 of Longines Irish Champions Weekend. The other group race is the Fitzdares Royal Whip Stakes with the historic Royal Whip first presented to the Curragh by King William IV in 1830 again presented to the winning owner. We are delighted to welcome Fitzdares as title sponsor of the race for the first time and I would like to thank William Woodhams and his team for their generous support of the Curragh and look forward to developing a long and successful partnership with them. The winning horse will receive a free entry into the Irish Champion Stakes and the Bahrain International Trophy Our other races are generously sponsored by TRI Equestrian, Mongey Communications, Finlay Volvo, Irish Racing Yearbook, RACE, Irish Stallion Farms EBF and DMG Media as part of the DMG Media Challenge. Sponsors make an invaluable contribution to racing and we would like to thank you to them all and ask you to support them whenever you can. For those of you reading this through our digital race card, I hope that you will enjoy the racing, either on TV or by following it through our social media channels. Today’s racing is being cover by Racing TV so there is no reason to miss out on the action. While we are disappointed not to have more than 500 attendees here, we look forward to welcome greater numbers back before too long, hopefully for the Longines Irish Champions Weekend on the 11th and 12th September Ticket are not on sale yet but please visit www.irishchampionsweeekend.ie to register your interest and be the first in the queue to receive ticket & event updates. Thanks again for all your support of the Curragh, we really appreciate it. I hope you enjoy the racing and once again a big thank you to all our sponsors for their continued support. Kind regards PAT KEOGH Chief Executive 3

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

Zebelle commands plenty of respect being the sole UK raider for George Boughey having won both her starts to date, including under a penalty at Thirsk last Friday, while others worthy of consideration include Head Mistress, a winner on debut at Down Royal, and Loveday.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT Nothing jumps off the page in this handicap but STRONG JOHNSON showed a liking for this C&D when winning last year’s competitive Rockingham Handicap and he bounced back to his best when scoring in the mud at Tipperary last time out, albeit from a 6lb lower mark. Edward Lynam’s sprinters are always to be feared and his lightly-raced Rough Diamond could prove a value alternative on the evidence of a narrow defeat on his sole 5f attempt at at Tipperary on his penultimate start. Stablemate Tide Of Time also merits respect after an improved latest effort at Bellewstown.

18 DAHOMEY (43)

THE FITZDARES ROYAL WHIP STAKES The visit by King George IV to the Curragh in 1821 was an occasion of great excitement. £3,000 was raised to erect a new stand and marquees were installed for the masses. The King presented The Royal Whip, with a handle covered in finely wrought solid gold shamrocks to the Curragh, one of the finest trophies in racing. He said: “I intend this whip to be presented to the owner of the best horse in Ireland weight for age… and, as I wish to encourage the breed of strong horses in this country you will take care to make the weights very heavy and that no horse younger than four years shall be permitted to run for it”. A copy of the original whip was later presented by King William IV to the Irish Turf Club during his visit to the Curragh in 1830. 2020 marked the 200th running of the Royal Whip which is believed to be Ireland’s oldest continuously run horse race. The race was established in 1821 and was named after its accompanying prize, a gold handed whip which was presented by King George IV. This original prize was replaced by another whip which was presented by King William IV in 1830. The race’s original prize fund of 100 guineas remained unchanged until 1954 although its distance and conditions changed several times over the 100 years that followed its first running. Since 1995 the race has been run over its current distance of a mile and a quarter and it has been run as a Group 3 since 2013 following a period at Group 2 level. Ironically one of the joint longest priced winners in the race’s history is Alleged who struck at 33/1 in 1977 before going on to become one of the great champions of the last 100 years. The other 33/1 winner of the race was the Jim Bolger-trained My Hollow in 1980.

32

In recent times this race has served as an ideal opportunity for some of Ireland’s leading stables to win a Group 3 with a classy type at a stage in the season where they need a run. Aidan O’Brien saddled High Chapparal to win under Mick Kinane in 2003, and since then has landed this contest with the likes of Eagle Mountain, Fame And Glory, Found and Armory. A new O’Brien name appeared on the roll of honour in 2019, with Joseph saddling Buckhurst to win under brother Donnacha. Armory only faced four rivals last year but had to work for his victory. His previous runs in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas and the Tattersalls Gold Cup had been with promise and under Seamie Heffernan he gained his first win as a three-year-old, seeing off Numerian by a neck in a good finish. See how the race played out with the replay below.

Hello, hope you’re well, Cornelius Lysaght, Racing Ambassador for Fitzdares here as the World’s Finest Bookmaker proudly supports Ireland’s longest-standing, continuously staged horserace. What a terrific heritage the Royal Whip has, with some excellent winners over the 200 years, another example of the outstanding heritage this sport has – something we should shout about every day. And, what a good field the race has this time – certainly plenty of runners – and those of us who’ve been banging on for a bit about the high quality of the Classic generation of 2021 are thinking that we might get further evidence here from the progressive number eight Earlswood, fourth behind Hurricane Lane and Lone Eagle in the Irish Derby – and a slightly luckless fourth at that. As a jockey Johnny Murtagh won this race something like five times – I certainly remember Fame And Glory in 2010 – and as a trainer he’s been costing Fitzdares a few quid on a few occasions – Ottoman Emperor at Goodwood, at Navan, at Gowran at Cork springs quickly to mind, and maybe in the St Leger at Doncaster too – and here’s another nice horse. Number four Innisfree is clearly an intriguing contender having not raced since the end of 2019; number 12 Visualisation was a fine second at Royal Ascot; plenty of good judges like number one Bolivar; and it’s great to see the versatile number six Layfayette due in the line-up. Elsewhere, in the Comer Group Irish St Leger Trial at 7:00, I’m in love with 9 Princess Zoe so really looking forward to her; in the first, the Finlay Volvo Curragh Stakes, the cross channel challenger Zebelle, number 11, is there having shaped up really well so far; and in that almost impossible-looking Irish Racing Yearbook 2022 six-furlong nursery at 5-30 I’m with number 15 Arch Enemy and her promising young rider after they finished very well over a bit shorter at Sligo. Some bookmakers, you know, are seen as the arch enemy by punters – hopefully not Fitzdares which will go to great lengths to please: there are all sorts of regular specials via the website fitzdares.com, and all races are live streamed for free via the website and the app. Best of luck, especially on Friday the Thirteenth; stay safe and lets speak again soon.

CURRAGH COMMENT There isn’t a great deal separating most of the runners in this Group 3 contest, with the returning Innisfree and Irish Derby fourth Earlswood perhaps holding the most long-term potential. However, they may not be able to show their true colours in this race, with Innisfree having to prove his fitness after a lengthy absence and Earlswood carrying a penalty as he drops back in trip, and the pair might have to settle for minor honours on this occasion. KALAPOUR is narrowly favoured having run an excellent race when second to the very talented La Petite Coco on his latest start at Killarney, when conceding plenty of weight, while O’reilly also looks set to go well now dropping back in trip.

CURRAGH COMMENT WITHAM RIVER ran his best race yet when fourth in a big field at Limerick two starts back and arguably bettered that effort when second at Ballinrobe last time, finishing a short head in front of Manwal. Joseph O’Brien’s charge appears to be on the up and can confirm that form and go one better. Anthem took a big step forward from what he’d shown previously when fourth at Galway last time and has claims, while newcomer Rayadiyr merits respect, especially if the market speaks in his favour.

CURRAGH COMMENT WORDSWORTH has shaped for a while as though staying would be his game and Aidan O’Brien’s colt, who has placed twice behind Hurricane Lane in Group 1s, appeared to find his recent outing on the sharper side when fifth at Goodwood. The step back up in distance is likely to play to his strengths and victory here would cement his St Leger claims. Princess Zoe produced a fine effort to finish second in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the mare commands plenty of respect with softer conditions here in her favour, while Amhran Na Bhfiann and Twilight Payment are others who boast solid credentials.

DEREK O’SULLIVAN AN APPRECIATION This evening’s apprentice race is the thirteenth renewal of an event in memory of Derek O’Sullivan, founding Director of RACE from 1973 until his untimely passing in 2002 and it represents a fitting tribute to a man who devoted so much time and energy to the training and development of young people in the horse racing industry. Originally from Dublin, Derek served his time as an electrician and worked his way through college, completing a social science degree before first meeting Stan Cosgrove in 1971 and accepting the challenge of setting up a school for apprentice jockeys as a form of social project. RACE opened its doors in September 1973 and for the first few years Curragh House was a hostel for a small number of young apprentices, offering lodgings, educational and social supports. The original Trustees/Committee included Stan Cosgrove, Joe McGrath (Turf Club Senior Steward), Michael Osborne (Irish National Stud), Tom Ryan, Tom Casey, Jim Marsh (stipendiary steward of the Turf Club) and Tom Brophy (local auctioneer in Newbridge). From such small acorns do giant oaks grow and the fledgling apprentice centre has evolved over more than 40 years into a broad-based academy offering professional training for jockeys, stable staff, trainers, breeders and farriers with a campus and facilities that are the envy of the racing world. Great appreciation is due to the Army Equitation School in the Curragh Camp who provided practical training facilities and support during all those formative years and to FÁS who structured and funded the initial training programmes from 1978 and to Kildare Wicklow ETB who still support the Trainee Jockey programme. Derek had a vision for RACE that extended far beyond Kildare town and his pioneering work led to an enduring friendship with Japan and the setting up of a training school in Hokkaido for the JRA. Ireland was put on the map as a centre of excellence for training racing staff and riders from around the globe and Derek was one of the founders of the European Association of Racing Schools (EARS). Derek always envisaged that RACE would be a catalyst for change in the Irish racing industry and he fought passionately for more investment in the professional training and education of young people and the welfare of stable staff. He understood that the all-round development of the person is what creates the foundation for a successful career and a fruitful life and his legacy is evident in the hundreds of RACE graduates who have made their mark in Ireland and around the world.

SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION Racing Academy & Centre of Education (RACE) is a national academy offering professional training and certified educational programmes for more than 700 people each year on its Kildare campus. The Trainee Jockey programme has achieved worldwide recognition and produced an outstanding list of successful graduates over the past thirty-nine years. RACE provides young people with the foundation for long-term success in a racing career. CURRAGH COMMENT An apprentice handicap featuring plenty of runners who have been out of form recently and, with that being the case, the focus turns to the lightly-raced three-year-old SARAN. The Joseph O’Brien-trained filly has offered promise on all three of her starts in maidens and may be capable of progressing now switching to handicaps. All Things Bright ran an excellent race when second at Leopardstown on her most recent outing, despite meeting some interference, and looks set to make another bold bid, while Montenotte hinted that he may be capable of better at Killarney on his reappearance and may outrun his odds.

CURRAGH COMMENT Betrayed has to enter the reckoning despite a 5lb hike for his win at Sligo last time, though a 4lb pull towards Jazz Dreamers, who was less than a length behind that day, could tilt the balance in favour of Seamus Fahey’s gelding. King’s View is a longstanding maiden but recent efforts have suggested a first success could be on the way, but fellow maiden STRANGE TIMES is preferred. Tracey Collins’ charge was only collared late on at Naas last time and could be the answer in a trappy affair.
