A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - SATURDAY 2 OCTOBER 2021

Good Afternoon, I’m delighted to be able to welcome you to our Season Finale. Today marks the end of the 2021 racing season here at the world’s oldest racecourse and it has certainly been one for the history books.

Our race card today is made up of 7 races that are set to thrill. The first of which is the Budweiser Brewing Group Apprentice Handicap Stakes (Class 3, 3yo) – set to begin the day’s events at 1:55pm. Later on in the afternoon, we have the Budweiser Brewing Group Novice Stakes (Class 3, 3+yo) at 4:15pm. This race will see the winner take home £14,000. Finally, our day will draw to a close with the Mental Health UK Handicap Stakes (Class 4, 3yo) at 5:20pm. I’d like to extend my thanks to today’s sponsors. Our headline sponsor, the Budweiser Brewing Group, are champions of the beer and cider industries. With iconic and heritage rich brands such as Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois as part of their offering, the Budweiser Brewing Group have made a long-lasting impact on the sector. The TOTE, started by Winston Churchill, is Britain’s leading bookmaker, specialising in pool betting, and also a long-running partner of Chester Racecourse. Baiana are a pop and Brazilian jazz band from nearby Liverpool who yesterday released their new album, Voodoo Man. Today we’re supporting Mental Health UK. The charity has worked tirelessly for almost 50 years to support and improve the mental health of people across the UK. This past year and a half they’ve been invaluable in helping individuals, families and communities get through the pandemic. We hope you’ll support them in any way you can. I hope you have a fantastic day with us at Chester Racecourse as we wrap up the 2021 season. We will be back in 2022 with our first fixture, City Plate Day as part of the Boodles May Festival, returning to the Roodee on 4 May. I hope you’ll join us again then.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS KRAKEN POWER needs to bounce back after a disappointing display at Musselburgh last month. The three-year-old gelding has produced some respectable performances this season and gets the vote to resume winning ways here now returning to this shorter distance. Master Zoffany should be at home at this venue after notching up two course wins and is likely to be on the premises again. Mayaas is another to consider if building on his seasonal reappearance at Newbury.

RACE 2

WIN: KRAKEN POWER

MAJOR JUMBO posted his best run this season when recording a second-placed finish at this course last month. The seven-year-old remains 14lb below his last winning mark and he gets the vote to build on his latest performance here. Militia merits respect after his recent success at Catterick but now faces a tougher assignment upped in grade. Bossipop has been hinting at a return to form and needs to taken seriously after a brace of second-placed efforts at Pontefract and Ripon.

RACE 3

WIN: MAJOR JUMBO

RACE 4 RACE 5

DANGER: LIVE IN THE DREAM

COUL QUEEN was successful when last seen at this track in July and, with the removal of the hood and drop in grade looking set to help her cause, she gets the nod. Gometra Ginty posted a career-best performance when winning at Musselburgh last month and should make another bold bid, while Flying West produced one of her best efforts when finishing a close second at Sandown on her latest start and is also worthy of respect. WIN: COUL QUEEN

DANGER: GOMETRA GINTY

The William Haggas-trained GAASSEE caught the eye making late headway when finishing third at Lingfield on his debut last month and, entitled to improve for that experience, the son of Sea The Stars makes plenty of appeal. Mind Hunter showed improved form when runner-up at the same track last time and should go well on his first run for this yard, while the newcomer Serena’s Symphony is bred to be above average and is also worth noting. WIN: GAASSEE

RACE 6

DANGER: MILITIA

Live In The Dream sets the standard in this contest and should appreciate the ease in grade after recording a seventh-placed finish in a warm race at Doncaster last month. However, a chance is taken on LUCY LULU to take a step forward on her recent fourthplaced effort at this course and she is likely to handle any ease in conditions. Manila Scouse was an eye-catcher on his racecourse debut at Beverley and could be open to further improvement. WIN: LUCY LULU

DANGER: MIND HUNTER

POT OF PAINT’s career-best efforts have come on testing ground and the lightly raced four-year-old gets the nod to shed the maiden tag at the 10th time of asking. Nakeeta has been a consistent customer this term and she won’t be far away on recent evidence. Madeeh was rated 86 in April and the Philip Kirby-trained gelding must be respected off this low mark. WIN: POT OF PAINT

RACE 7

DANGER: MASTER ZOFFANY

DANGER: NAKEETA

PRETTY FAIR was unable to figure in Listed company last time out but, considering the daughter of Dubawi won her penultimate outing in similar conditions, she gets the nod to bounce back to form on her handicap bow. Commonsensical has been tough to keep out of the frame this term and he rates the most immediate danger, while Skytree is another to consider. WIN: PRETTY FAIR

DANGER: COMMONSENSICAL

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

Unlike most handicaps on the flat, this one mile handicap is for three-year-olds only rated between 71 and 90 is also open to horses which are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is usually a disadvantage.

LARADO made all in good style at Epsom last week and could string his rivals out again round here if taking to the softer surface. Master Zoffany has won twice at Chester this year, coming clear from off a strong gallop on both occasions, and he’s the obvious danger with the ground ideal.

FEARBY is favoured by the weights having finished in the frame in Group events on his last 3 starts and is fancied to take advantage in a race that doesn’t look as competitive as the numbers suggest. Adaay In Asia wasn’t seen to best effect when bidding for the hat-trick at Goodwood and rates the main threat ahead of the unbeaten Tatsumaki, who looks a useful prospect.

for three yrs old and upwards Total race value £18000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £7313, 2nd £3658, 3rd £1829, 4th £914, 5th £457, 6th £229. (Penalty Value £9277.20) Weights raised 2lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. RACE DESCRIPTION

After every race the official handicapper will review all performances and alter the runners rating, either up or down, in accordance with their performance. A below par effort could result in the drop of a point or two whilst a barnstorming victory could see a horses rating increase significantly. However, if a recent winner runs again soon after it’s victory, there will not be time to reassess their performance so they will be allotted a mandatory 6lb penalty. This handicap has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated between 76 and 95 and will be run over five furlongs.

VINTAGE CLARETS quickly made up in to a useful juvenile this term, twice successful over 5f prior to finishing a solid third in the Coventry at Royal Ascot in June. Not so well served by a high draw at Ayr on his latest start, he’s fancied to be firmly in the mix now. Chipotle will find this easier than recent assignments and is feared, along with Symphony Perfect.

for three yrs old and upwards fillies and mares Total race value £14200 Owners Prize Money. 1st £5547, 2nd £2773, 3rd £1387, 4th £693, 5th £240, 6th £240. (Penalty Value £7020) RACE DESCRIPTION Like most handicaps on the flat, this one mile handicap is for three-year-olds and upwards rated between 66 and 85 is also open to horses which are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is usually a disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER

A tightly-knit handicap so at the likely odds it’s worth siding with C&D winner OVERHAUGH STREET given he has slipped to a very handy mark and took a step back in the right direction when sixth here last week. Euro Implosion is enjoying a fine season and another bold showing looks on the cards on the back of his Ayr second, while course-winner Gabrial The One can’t be overlooked either.

Don’t forget to bet on the 4:52 at WOLVERHAMPTON, 5:10 at FONTWELL PARK and 5:15 at REDCAR.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys. 55

PLAY SMARTER

LIFE ON THE ROCKS hasn’t had the race to suit yet since joining Richard Fahey, but it remains the case that he has a bigger effort in him when it all clicks, so a chance is taken on him given the prospect of a sound pace in this open-looking handicap. Two Brothers would also benefit from an end-to-end gallop, and he’s feared most ahead of Sunset Memory.
