A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - SATURDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2021

Good Afternoon, I’m thrilled to be able to welcome you all to our Cheshire Day race meeting here at Chester Racecourse. This Cheshire Day fixture is a unique race day, available only this year due to the change in scheduling as a result of the pandemic. You’re part of the lucky crowd who get to experience this one-time only race day. Today’s race card will kick off in style with the Boodles EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (Class 5) (for horses in Band B, C and D) (2yo) at 2pm. At 3:10pm we’ll see jockeys compete for today’s biggest prize in the Support The Injured Jockeys Fund Nursery Handicap Stakes (Class 2) (2yo). The lucky connections of the winning horse will leave with a prize of £26,122. Finally, our day of racing will draw to a close at 5:25pm with the Fireworks Extravaganza Handicap Stakes (Class 4) (3+yo). I’d like to extend my thanks to today’s sponsors. Boodles have been a partner of Chester Racecourse for many years. Renowned for their craftsmanship in creating fine jewellery since the 18th century, Boodles have become a global ambassador for the jewellery industry and are represented by countless fans of the brand across the world. Printworks are a local business who have not only thrived themselves but enabled other local businesses to reach new heights with their in-house design studio and print facilities. Ideal Recruit are a Manchester based recruitment agency with offices across England and Wales who work tirelessly to match employers with jobseekers. This Cheshire Day we are supporting two charities. The first of which is the Injured Jockey’s Fund. A cause close to our heart as a racecourse, the fund was started in 1964 in response to injuries received by jockeys at the Grand National. Since then, the fund has worked with injured jockeys and their families, providing help, support and financial assistance. Mental Health UK are another important charity we’re supporting today. The charity and its staff are dedicated to helping millions across the UK with support and resources to improve and manage mental health for everyone. Have a wonderful time today at Chester Racecourse. We’re next racing on the 2nd October when our Season Finale will close the 2021 racing season in true Chester style. I hope you’ll join us for what promises to be an unforgettable fixture.

Ian O’Doherty Chairman

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS This can go the way of MAHAGONI, who rarely runs a bad race and has been placed in five of his last six outings since winning at Chepstow in June. The selection ran well here back in June when runner-up to the progressive Ever Given, while Morgan Cole’s 7lb claim can only serve to enhance his claims. Point Lynas can give the selection most to think about despite remaining a maiden through seven starts. Brighton winner Bolton Abbey is another to consider stepping up in trip.

RACE 2

WIN: MAHAGONI

Mossbawn has gone from strength to strength since returning from a 197-day absence last month and he is a major player as he goes in search of the hat-trick. Preference is for recent C&D winner MUNTADAB, though, who remains very well handicapped on old form, while the booking of Hayley Turner is another positive. Lincoln Park is somewhat of a course specialist and can also have his say.

RACE 3

WIN: MUNTADAB

RACE 4 RACE 5

DANGER: FLAMING RIB

BARYSHNIKOV has been running well in some strong-looking handicaps this season and he ran another good race at Ripon on his latest outing. If he can perform to that level again he will be a leading contender, while the ultra-consistent Six Strings has been placed in his last seven starts and it would be no surprise to see him in the mix again. Satono Japan disappointed last time but if he can bounce back from that run he may feature as well. WIN: BARYSHNIKOV

DANGER: SIX STRINGS

Enfranchise got off the mark at Pontefract and if she can reproduce that performance she will be hard to beat. However, MUJTABA gets the vote after getting his career off to the best possible start when winning emphatically at Chepstow and with more improvement on the cards he is a big player in this contest. Barrister Blaster is another to note as he is related to some classy milers and may be able to make an impression on his debut. WIN: MUJTABA

RACE 6

DANGER: MOSSBAWN

An impressive winner of a valuable nursery at York, Flaming Rib sets the standard on ratings for last year’s winning trainer, but he may have his work cut out giving 12lb and upwards to the rest of the field. The suggestion is the progressive STRAITS OF MOYLE, who has been a late bloomer as a juvenile. Now that the penny has dropped with taking wins at Carlisle and Ayr, there should be much more to come from Richard Fahey’s charge. Chelmsford winner Harb is another that makes plenty of appeal. WIN: STRAITS OF MOYLE

DANGER: ENFRANCHISE

BOOKMARK has stepped up significantly in recent starts and, having impressed when scoring over course and distance last time, the Michael Bell-trained filly looks set to take some stopping as she attempts to land her third successive win. Golden Melody travelled well when finishing a close fourth at Ayr on her latest start and is respected, while Galah has the blinkers fitted now dropping in trip and may also get involved. WIN: BOOKMARK

RACE 7

DANGER: POINT LYNAS

DANGER: GOLDEN MELODY

The Andrew Balding-trained AURIFEROUS has been running against better company than this recently and, on just his second start at this trip, the three-year-old may be capable of getting off the mark. Fandabidozi has produced a consistent level of form for a while now and looks set to make a bold bid, while Gabrial The One drops in grade and can also feature. WIN: AURIFEROUS

DANGER: FANDABIDOZI

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length.

The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

PLAY SMARTER

MASEKELA’s close second to Native Trail at the July meeting here reads very well in light of that one’s Group 1 success in Ireland this month. Andrew Balding’s colt should have more to offer now stepping up to 1m so he’s preferred to Acomb-winner Royal Patronage, who also promises to benefit from the extra yardage this afternoon. Coroebus looked a good prospect on debut and also merits respect.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

JAWWAAL is enjoying an excellent season and signalled he’s ready to bag a third win in 2021 when a promising recent fourth over C&D. Be Proud is a tough and likeable sort who seems sure to be in the mix on the back of his excellent Ayr Bronze Cup second. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular six furlongs race is an open nursery.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

CHICHESTER was deeply impressive when bolting up in a first-time visor at Ayr last week, drawing clear in a well-run race with his jockey able to ease down a touch. This is a better race but he’s officially ahead of the game under a penalty. The Gosden team has an enviable record in this and are represented by 3-y-o Uncle Bryn and Magical Morning, with Indeed the pick of those at longer odds.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 90. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85.

RACE DESCRIPTION This contest is another Novice Stakes, this time run over a distance of seven and a half furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds and upwards in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

THE MENTAL HEALTH UK FILLIES’ HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) for three yrs old and upwards fillies and mares Total race value £11000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3840, 2nd £1920, 3rd £960, 4th £480, 5th £400, 6th £400, 7th £400, 8th £400. (Penalty Value £4860)

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares which have been rated from 56 to 75. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
