A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - SATURDAY 11 SEPTEMBER 2021

Good Afternoon, I’m thrilled to welcome you to the second, and final day of our annual Autumn Festival. As the end of the racing season here at Chester approaches, today is a special fixture as we make the most of the longer days and enjoy the sport of kings to its fullest. Today’s racecard features 7 exhilarating races, the first of which is the Golden Square Warrington EBF Novice Stakes (Class 4) (2yo) GBB race at 1:30pm. Half an hour later, our listed race will take to the track. With a prize of £28,355 for the winner, the TOTE+ Stand Cup Stakes (Class 1) (3+yo) is set to thrill. Finally, today’s meeting – and the Autumn Festival – will draw to a close with the Horseradish Catering Handicap Stakes (Class 4) (4+yo) at 4:55pm. I’d like to thank the sponsors of today’s races; Tote, Clogau, HomeServe and Mental Health UK. I’d also like to extend our thanks to today’s headline sponsor, Golden Square Warrington, whose shopping centre of 135 stores continues to be an economic force within the local area. Tote was started by Sir Winston Churchill back in 1928 and their iconic red and white logo can be seen at racecourses across the country as a titan of the bookmaking industry. Clogau are a renowned British jewellery business, championing craftsmanship and enduring style. Their Welsh gold – the rarest in the world – can be found in every piece of their jewellery and continues to be used by British Royalty today. Today we continue to support Mental Health UK. Their invaluable work continues to make a difference to lives across the nation, and we are proud to continue our partnership. We encourage you to donate whatever you can to this worthy cause. I wish you a wonderful day here at Chester Racecourse and hope you enjoy the last day of our Autumn Festival. We will be racing again on Saturday 25th September for our penultimate fixture of the season, Cheshire Day. I hope you’ll return to celebrate this special occasion.

Ian O’Doherty Chairman

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS A case can be made for several of these in the opener, but a chance is taken on NOTEABLE who posted an encouraging fourth-placed effort on his racecourse debut at Newmarket. That form has already received a boost and she gets the vote to break her maiden tag here. Scarlet Dancer seems to be heading in the right direction and could be the main threat to the selection, while Lordman and Zulu Tracker are also considered.

RACE 2

WIN: NOTEABLE

Alignak hasn’t been seen since taking this race last year and warrants respect on his seasonal bow. However, a chance is taken on THRONE HALL who posted an encouraging second-placed effort when last seen at York and is not to be underestimated tackling this grade over his best trip. Alounak comes out best on ratings and is likely to be on the premises. Invite is another to watch in the betting on his first start for Andrew Balding..

RACE 3

WIN: THRONE HALL

RACE 4 RACE 5

DANGER: AU CLAIR DE LUNE

INSTINCTIVE MOVE gave a good account when fourth in a competitive Nursery at York and it would be no surprise if the unexposed two-year-old took another step forward in this contest. The course-and-distance winner, Devious Angel, appears the most immediate danger, despite failing to fire in Listed company last month. Little Miss Dynamo has made a solid start to her career and is also noted. WIN: INSTINCTIVE MOVE

DANGER: DEVIOUS ANGEL

Although MAJOR JUMBO has endured a tough campaign, he returns to a course he thrives at and appears to be off an appealing mark. With Oisin McSweeney taking off an extra 7lb, the Kevin Ryan-trained gelding gets the nod to return to form, despite not getting his head in front for two years. Lihou has been a consistent customer this term and the five-year-old demands the utmost respect, while Out The Hat completes the shortlist. WIN: MAJOR JUMBO

RACE 6

DANGER: ALOUNAK

MANCINI can be considered unlucky after he was caught in the final strides by an improver at this course when last seen. The seven-year-old remains on a workable mark and gets the vote to take this contest, now dropped in trip. Au Clair De Lune recently hinted at a return to form at Ripon and warrants respect here, while Hochfeld and Mr Curiosity are others to note. WIN: MANCINI

DANGER: LIHOU

SPIRIT DANCER arrives here fresher than most following a 77-day break. An 8lb rise for a taking success at Newcastle appears steep on the face of things but the son of Frankel was narrowly denied on his penultimate start over C&D and is still quite lightly raced. Victory Chime’s recent second at Sandown represented a return to form and he was fourth in this contest last year. Group One Power may ideally want further but he has always been a strong traveller. WIN: SPIRIT DANCER

RACE 7

DANGER: SCARLET DANCER

DANGER: VICTORY CHIME

It can pay to side with the in-form duo of George Boughey and Nicola Currie, as WIDAAD looks to build on some very solid recent efforts. Not beaten far in each of her last four, the step up in trip can work the oracle from a plum draw in stall two. Flatley is of interest on handicap debut, as well as Little Ted who is fresh off an easy victory in selling company at Ripon. Bay Of Naples and Tundra also warrant respect. WIN: WIDAAD

DANGER: FLATLEY

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

If you have concerns about the integrity of British racing or the wellbeing of the sport’s participants, human or equine, please contact RaceWISE. Anonymous reporting.

RACE DESCRIPTION This one mile and four furlongs contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set according to age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PLAY SMARTER

HOCHFELD has 2 wins, 2 seconds and third in this year’s Chester Cup to show from 5 previous visits here. He’s now 2lb lower than for that good run in the Chester Cup so looks well worth siding with at a venue which clearly plays to his strengths. Mancini was a good second here last time and should go well again, while Au Clair de Lune is worth a second look.

Don’t forget to bet on the 2:40 at BATH, 3:00 at DONCASTER and 3:05 at LINGFIELD PARK.

THANK YOU Thank you to Medics UK, Spark Medical and North West Ambulance Service for their invaluable services to all at Chester Racecourse during this meeting.

BETTING FORECAST: 6-5 St Mark’s Basilica, 7-4 Tarnawa, 11-4 Poetic Flare, 20 Patrick Sarsfield. A small but select line-up and, with tactics likely to play a significant role, ST MARK’S BASILICA may hold the aces. The Dewhurst Stakes winner is bidding for a fifth successive Group 1 success having landed both French classics this term and cemented his reputation with a brilliant turn of foot to beat Addeybb and Mishriff in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. That may prove a crucial weapon here with Ryan Moore likely to play his cards in the straight. Tarnawa won three times at the highest level last year including over this trip on testing ground at Longchamp and landed the odds in style on her reappearance here last month. Some rain would boost her chance while Poetic Flare relishes a fast surface as evidenced by victories in the Qipco 2000 Guineas and a top class effort in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. It will be fascinating to see how he copes with this extra quarter mile. Dual course winner Patrick Sarsfield looks outclassed.

for two yrs old Total race value £19000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £7720, 2nd £3861, 3rd £1930, 4th £965, 5th £483, 6th £241. (Penalty Value £9792.60)

RACE DESCRIPTION A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 95.

To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. A trappy sprint, so at the likely odds a chance is taken on the consistent LIHOU, who can boast a C&D win and is weighted to go close again off an easing mark. Indian Creak is another in-form sort who seems sure to be in the shake-up now the official assessor has started to relent, while course-specialist Powerallied can never be ruled out round here and must enter calculations too.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – in this case 5lb for four to six-year-olds and 4lb for seven-year-olds and upwards.

Having been competitive from a mark of 105 back in April, William Haggas’ FAYLAQ gets the vote to notch a fourth victory of his career having turned in a rare poor effort at Sandown 3 weeks ago. THE HORSERADISH CATERING HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

1m 2f 70y

for four yrs old and upwards Total race value £11200 Owners Prize Money. 1st £4267, 2nd £2133, 3rd £1067, 4th £533, 5th £240, 6th £240, 7th £240, 8th £240. (Penalty Value £5400) RACE DESCRIPTION Today’s finale is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
