THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

We are thrilled that Jump racing returns to its spiritual home this weekend for The Showcase and we are delighted to be able to host world class sport once more. Although it won’t have the same feel as a traditional race meeting, it is fantastic that the sport is able to continue and we are pleased to welcome owners to watch their horses run up the famous Cheltenham Hill. We will, of course, be missing a buzz from the familiar Cheltenham crowd and look forward to when we are able to open our gates to our loyal fans once it is safe to do so. Although you are unable to be with us to watch the racing on course please do enjoy the show that the ITV racing team will be putting on over both days. We have a fantastic seven race card on offer today, with The Bentley Flying Spur Handicap Chase taking the feature spot this afternoon. As ever, we would like to thank all our sponsors for their support of today’s card; Bentley, Matchbook, Square In The Air, Catesby and Two Farmers Crisps. Finally, thank you to you all for your support over the past few months. We look forward to more quality sport gracing our course this year and hope to be able to welcome you all back to the Home of Jump Racing one day soon. MARTIN ST QUINTON Chairman

IAN RENTON Regional Director

DON'T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING - SATURDAY 24th OCTOBER THE SHOWCASE - DAY TWO The Showcase Saturday on Saturday 24 October 2020 concludes our first race meeting back. Saturday sees another fantastic seven races, including The Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap Steeple Chase. As The Showcase will be raced behind closed doors, stay involved with the action from home with our Racing Hub.

BETTING EXPLAINED — Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. — Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. — ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. — ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet. — Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. — Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. — Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

A DAY AT THE RACES EXPLAINED — Explore and familiarise yourself with the racecourse. — Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day. — Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race. This is your chance to see the horses up-close. Look for signs of their fitness and attitude. A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good. — Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.

RACEHORSES EXPLAINED — Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

An interesting race and MIDNIGHT RIVER may be the way to go having beaten a subsequent winner a shade cosily in a reasonable time at Uttoxeter earlier this month. He promises to be well suited by this longer trip. Ask For Glory routed a thin field at Wincanton when last seen and is a leading contender now upped in grade, though Topofthecotswolds shouldn’t be taken lightly either.

PLAY SMARTER

ONE TRUE KING readily opened his account at Uttoxeter last time and, provided his lack of experience doesn’t hold him back in this much bigger field, he could show an opening mark of 125 to be rather lenient. Nanabelle and Wild Max both have disappointing runs to put behind them, but they’re fresh and likely to get back on track.
