Welcome THURSDAY NIGHT UNDER THE LIGHTS

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse for one of our signature Thursday night race meetings. It has undoubtedly been a difficult time for all of us up and down the country and we’re delighted to be able to offer our guests a sense of normality once again. We have still only staged a dozen or so racedays with crowds since Spring 2020, and it’s been great to see people really enjoying themselves again. Whilst we are lucky to have plenty of outdoor space here, we do all need to continue play our part in relation to the ongoing covid situation. As such, we would encourage you to continue with some good practices recommended at all racecourses as these can benefit you and fellow racegoers. Please wear a face mask at your discretion indoors in busier areas; continue to use the hand sanitisers available and please bear in mind good social distancing principles. The guidance around “hands, face, space, fresh air” remains important for us all. Thank you. The eight races this evening have attracted a bumper 97 runners, and they’ll all be looking to win a share of the £60,000 prize money pot that’s on offer. The feature event on our card today is race four at 6.30pm - the £19,000 “tote.co.uk Stakes” over 6 furlongs. Six top quality sprinters are in the line-up for this high-grade handicap race and plenty of them are in with a chance. Her Majesty the Queen’s runner Inveigle won here impressively last autumn and ran a tidy race earlier this month at Ascot despite a slow start. However, his best form seems to be over longer trips than tonight’s six furlongs. However, the distance looks perfect for May Sonic trained by Charles Hills. He ran really well here back in July to win a similar race and in fact is unbeaten in his two runs at CCR. He can maintain his 100% strike rate and make it three out of three tonight. We hope you have a fabulous time with your friends and family this evening. Our next fixture is on Saturday night, 25th September, when we’ll hope to see you again for all the colour and excitement of horseracing at CCR. There’s also the fantastic bonus of Example live in concert straight after the racing. Fraser Garrity Racecourse Manager

Timeform Rating

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS BUYING TIME made an encouraging handicap debut when finishing fourth at Wolverhampton last month and, with the drop in trip looking set to work in his favour, the son of Profitable is fancied to get off the mark. PLAY SMARTER

BUYING TIME made a highly promising start in nurseries when fourth at Wolverhampton and, given he could find no extra late having led inside the final furlong, this drop in trip might well bring on further improvement. As such, he’s marginally preferred to Fiji Gold, with nursery debutant Lucky Man also considered despite being drawn in 11.

CITY SELECTIONS The David Simcock-trained HEATH RISE posted his best piece of form when getting off the mark at Kempton last month and the three-year-old makes plenty of appeal on his first try at this trip. The Tide Turns has shown plenty of improvement since switching to handicaps and may be capable of stepping up again on his return from a break, while the veteran Murhib has the hood re-fitted and looks set for a much better showing this time. PLAY SMARTER

Tough to rule any of these out but the vote goes to THE TIDE TURNS. Sir Mark Prescott’s charge had looked progressive when scoring twice earlier this year and having had a near 3-month break, he’s taken to resume winning ways back up in trip. Suns Up Guns Up is sure to provide stern opposition bidding for a hat-trick so he’s feared most, ahead of the unexposed Vin Rouge.

CITY SELECTIONS LA ROCA DEL FUEGO has been successful on his last two starts over course and distance and, having not been disgraced on turf last time, the five-year-old is tipped to return to winning ways. The Andrew Balding-trained Sea Fern offered some encouragement when finishing fifth on her handicap debut at Lingfield earlier this month and may do even better now dropping in trip, while Perfect Symphony won despite racing wide at that same track last month and is also worth considering. CITY SELECTIONS May Sonic should be suited by the return to the Polytrack after a recent outing at York and has to be considered. However, a chance is taken on CHOCOYA, who was a comfortable winner at Salisbury, despite having to encounter traffic problems. The daughter of Sepoy has been keeping better company this season and gets the vote to overcome a 3lb rise for her latest success. Inveigle is an interesting contender and he could be a different proposition now tackling sprint distances. CHOCOYA

A leap of faith is required in supporting HURAIZ given his losing run stretches back to summer 2019, but he patently shaped better than the bare result at Newcastle (5f) 2 weeks ago and could be worth chancing given he’s dangerously well handicapped. VINO SANTO has yet to win a race, but he reacted really well to blinkers when third at Lingfield a fortnight ago and is now an appealing candidate from the same mark. Puffin Island was just edged out by Aiguillette at Lingfield last month but may well reverse the form this time and is feared most.

CITY SELECTIONS AGENT OF FORTUNE remains a well-handicapped horse on old form, and recent efforts over C&D and at Lingfield suggest a win may be imminent. The daughter of Kheleyf may have gone for home too soon last time and as long as she is waited with a bit longer here, she can regain the winning thread. Mystic Dragon is feared following taking victories at Yarmouth in two of her last three, while Flower Of Thunder is another to consider. Artisan Bleu and Headley George complete the shortlist. ARTISAN BLEU failed in her hat-trick bid at Nottingham when last seen in April, but her form figures read 2311 in all-weather handicaps and, assuming all is well following a break, she is taken to get back on track now returned to an artificial surface. Next on the list is Agent of Fortune, who looks ready to strike judged on recent efforts, while Flower of Thunder should also have a part to play.
