WELCOME W E LC O M I N G O U R G U E S T S B AC K TO C C R - I T ’ S FA M I LY F U N DAY. Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse for our summer family fun day! It has undoubtedly been a difficult time for all of us up and down the country and we’re just delighted to be able to offer our customers a sense of normality once again. This is just our fifth fixture back with crowds since March 2020, so it’s been a while. Whilst we are lucky to have plenty of outdoor space here, we do all need to continue play our part in relation to the ongoing covid situation. As such, we would encourage you to continue with some good practices that are recommended at all racecourses. These can benefit your family and fellow racegoers today. Please wear a face mask at your discretion indoors in busier areas; continue to use the hand sanitisers available and please still bear in mind good social distancing principles. The guidance around “hands, face, space, fresh air” remains important for us all. Thank you. The seven scheduled races this afternoon have attracted 59 runners, and they’ll all be looking to win a share of the near £50,000 prize money pot that’s on offer. The feature event on our card is race at 3.35pm - the £11,500 “Fairwood” stakes over seven furlongs. Six talented runners are in the line-up for this fillies’ handicap and it’s not easy to rule any of them out. Course and distance winner Lethal Talent produced a power-packed final furlong when victorious here last month and was perhaps unsuited by Epsom’s undulations on her most recent run. She is yet to win in this grade of race though. So Tomouth could be the answer with Oisin Murphy in the saddle. The Godophin filly has a good record on all-weather surfaces surface and was an impressive winner on her last run in a six furlongs race. The extra 220 yards today could suit her. We hope you have a fabulous time with your friends and family today. Our next fixture is on Saturday evening, and we’d be thrilled to see you again for all the colour and excitement of Summer horseracing at CCR. It’s our prestigious Chelmsford City Cup night with the fantastic Ministry of Sound Classical in concert after racing. Fraser Garrity Racecourse Manager

Star Ratings Explained each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

★★★★★ selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ can be given little or no chance.

GU I D E TO R AC I N G at c h e l m s fo R d c i t y Racing at chelmsford city takes place on the flat over distances from five furlongs to two miles – there are eight furlongs in a mile. Whilst most flat races take place on turf, racing here takes place on a synthetic surface. as the surface tends to have better drainage than turf it is easier to produce consistent racing ground whilst during cold weather it is also far less prone to freezing – hence the generic term all Weather racing. Races over five, six and seven furlongs tend to be a pure test of speed, with races over a mile and further better suited to horses with stamina. there are many different types of races but all are based on the sex, age or ability of the horse. the most common is a handicap – a race where each horse is allocated a weight, according to its ability. the best horse in the race will carry the biggest weight; theoretically giving each horse an equal chance. the skill is trying to work out which horses are better than the handicapper thinks they are! maiden races are for horses which have yet to win a race. often aimed at two-year-olds, but also open to older horses, the skill here is to decipher what can sometimes be very limited form. claiming and selling races allow the connections to offer their horse for sale. after the race the runners are offered for sale at the price printed next to their name in the racecard. other types of races include Group and listed races which are aimed at the very best horses in training and the classics – the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, the derby, the oaks and the st leger. if you have any questions about today’s racing please feel free to speak to any member of the raceday team.

(Penalty Value £3510) CITY SELECTIONS Mick Appleby is a dab hand at finding improvement in his charges and the Irish import SAATTY looks in need of the handler’s touch. With the champion jockey booked and the stable in fine form, the son of Markaz can break his maiden tag at the seventh attempt. The largely exposed Taylored could be there or thereabouts as well, while Mick’s Spirit has only run three times so is not without hope.

(Penalty Value £2322) CITY SELECTIONS She may be winless since March last year but it may pay to side with PRECIOUS PLUM here on her course record alone. A double winner at the track and a close-up fourth here back in March, she can regain the winning thread under Richard Kingscote. Evergreen stablemate Kyllukey could also be in the reckoning. Captain Ryan is expected to pose the biggest threat, though, after winning at this level at Wolverhampton back in May.

(Penalty Value £2322) CITY SELECTIONS POP FAVORITE didn’t seem to appreciate the soft ground he encountered on his first two starts for David Brown, but he showed plenty of promise at Lingfield last week and there could be more to come from him. Trepidation may appreciate returning to a mile on the all-weather and looks another leading contender, while Broughtons Chief could also be involved after showing some potential at Wolverhampton on his latest start.

(Penalty Value £2862) Weights raised 3lbs and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. CITY SELECTIONS Gauntlet and Soros have run well in some competitive-looking staying handicaps recently and both look to have live chances in this contest. However, DOUBLETHETROUBLE could be well handicapped based on his runs at Nottingham and Yarmouth. He has shaped like he would appreciate the step up to 2m and the application of cheekpieces may bring further improvement, while he seems to act on the all-weather as well and might be able to break his maiden tag at the eighth attempt.
