WELCOME

A very warm welcome to you all and please accept my thanks for your attendance and support today, the second day of Cartmel’s July race meeting

Cartmel is a place where people matter – it makes a difference to us that you want to spend time here and we never take that for granted.

To all the Owners who have declared runners with us today – we do appreciate your support of our race programme, and to those Trainers who work towards our Season, a very big vote of thanks

Our sponsors today are Louis Roederer, Strathmore Hotels, Weatherby’s Hamilton and Bowness Bay Brewing. Thank you all, your support contributes directly to our race programme

Our Charity is Women’s Community Matters, their third year at Cartmel and an organisation I am pleased to say always do well with us. I would ask that, if you find the time, you visit their stand on the Course-side and find out more about their services.

This Season is passing by so very quickly, I do hope you enjoy your day and perhaps consider joining us again during our August Bank Holiday meeting, Saturday 24th and Monday 26th.

All that remains, is for me to wish you a wonderful day and the very best of luck

CARTMEL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

additional prize Becky was awarded a Tiffanny Diamond Necklace courtesy of Cartmel for her success.

In the William Hill ITV Opener Special Novices Hurdle there was a landmark win for Dylan Kidd Not only was this Dylans first ride at Cartmel, it was the first time Dylan has ridden outside of Ireland It was a perfectly judged ride, and there will be plenty more to follow

Sean Bowen remains at the top of the leaderboard after Saturdays racing, but the pack are closing in with some Cartmel favourites narrowing the gap. Sean Quinlan had 2 places which has seen him close to within 3 points, and Richie McLernons win on Lightning Company pushed him up to a share of 3rd position With so many Jockeys close behind there will be plenty of movement in the remaining meetings

The Cartmel Female Jockeys Handicap Hurdle is the richest Female only Jumps race in the calendar, and saw a fantastic front running ride from Becky Smith on Ashington to land the spoils As an

Dylan Johnston had a great day. His win on Tupelo Mississippi in the William Hill Offers Proper Betting Prices Handicap for enthusiastic owners, was his first at Cartmel and quickly followed up with 2 more places

TRAINER PTS

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE

We have a clear leader at the top of the challenge with Ben Haslam opening up a 3 point gap on his pursuers. After 2 places the win came in the concluding Cartmel Novices Handicap Hurdle when Lightning Company came out on top in the downpour Ben went close to landing the Challenge last year and with his runners always doing well here he is one to follow for the remaining meetings

The Training performance of the day went to George Bewley. He had 2 runners in the William Hill Proper Betting Handicap and both pulled a long way clear of the rest of the field with Lights Are Green ridden by son Jonathon, eventually coming on top ahead of Breaking The Ice.

Ashingtons win in the Cartmel Female Jockeys Handicap Hurdle was the first here this season for Mark Walford. It was family affair as Mark’s daughter Anna rides him out at home each day.

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

HOW TO READ

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

Race Description This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85.

PLAY SMARTER

RESTANDBETHANKFUL hadn’t been seen to best effect over fences on his first 2 starts this season, before getting back on track returned to hurdling when second at this C&D on his latest outing, so he could be ready to take advantage of his lower hurdles mark this time around. Trailblazer got off the mark at Perth 8 days ago and is feared most, ahead of Malangen.

for maiden four yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £7200 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3005, 2nd £1503, 3rd £751, 4th £376. (Penalty Value £3921.12) 2 Balloted Out Under Rules (I)9 and (I)10.

Race Description The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles and one furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today.

CHAMPAGNE LOUIS ROEDERER HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4)

for four yrs old and upwards ¨ Total prize fund £7850 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3171, 2nd £1585, 3rd £793, 4th £396, 5th £198. (Penalty Value £4145.58) 2 Eliminated Under Rules (I)9 and (I)10.

Race Description This is a three miles and one and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 110. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

Weightwatcher: STARLYTE won off a handicap mark of 104, her rating is now down 8lb to 96.

Probable S.P’s: 4-1 Saint Bibiana (IRE), 5-1 City Derby (IRE), 6-1 Boomslang (GB), Starlyte (IRE), 10-1 Dynamite Kentucky (FR), 14-1 Shantou Champagne (IRE), 16-1 Dalileo (IRE), 22-1 Lady Mendoza (IRE), 25-1 Native Fighter (IRE), 28-1 Our Laura B (IRE), 33-1 Shantou Sunset (GB), 150-1 Monticello (IRE), 200-1 Robert d’Ores (FR)

PLAY SMARTER

CITY DERBY has looked strong at the finish in winning over 2 3/4m here the last twice, which augurs well ahead of this step back up in trip and he is taken to complete the hat-trick. Boomslang, who was a close second to the selection at the end of May prior to going one better in a maiden, is feared most given his scope for further progress, while Starlyte has to enter calculations and Saint Bibiana will also merit respect if she takes her chance

Race preview from Weatherbys

Today’s feature is the Weatherbys Hamilton Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase, inwhichsixhorsesgotopostfor thisclass3contestover2m1½f.

The weights are headed byLipaK, who represents trainers Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero. The six-year-old is unbeaten in two starts over fences, winning at Bangor-on-Dee in April and off a 6lbs higher mark, again in May. He reverted to hurdles when unseating Henry Brooke two out at Southwell and is of obvious interest now he switches backtochasing,despitean11lbsriseand comingdownintripslightly.Stableform isaslightconcernbutthesonofMamool isclearlyingoodheartatpresent.

Carcaci Castle is a last-timeout winner and was successful under similar conditions

Forcing Bull is also unbeaten over fences, havingwonondebutatUttoxeter earlierthismonth.MakingallunderBrian Hughes, he kept-on well over 2m4f on soft ground and has been put up 4lbs by the handicapper. Donald McCain’s seven-year-old is another who comes back in trip but also needs to prove his ability to handle better ground, with all four wins – including his Point-to-Point success–beingrecordedonsoft.

Sandy Thomson’s Carcaci Castle is another last-time-out winner and he wassuccessfulundersimilarconditions, scoring on good ground and over the minimum trip at Hexham. On a

line through the third-placed Grain d’Oudairies, the Getaway gelding looks to be quite well-treated in comparison to Lipa K, having gone up just 3lbs for thatwin.

The Gypsy Davey has yet to win over fences but has shaped well in defeat on all three starts and dropping in trip slightlylookstobeapositivemove.Evan Williams’ son of Sageburg ran well on good ground at Market Rasen in lateMay and again at Ffos Las. Third behind Bob Bob Ricard on that occasion, the winnerwonagainnexttimeandhisform has quite a solid feel to it. He makes the lengthy round-trip from the Vale of Glamorgan and looks sure to give anothergoodaccountofhimself.

Jimmy Moffatt’s Cuzco du Mathan is another who has yet to win a chase but he is the only course winner in the race. The winner of a soft-ground handicap hurdle here last August, he is another who might be well-suited by coming back in trip, although he has won just oncefromninestartsforthelocaltrainer.

A half-brother to Paul Nicholls’ 2021 Pendil Novices’ Chase winner Tamaroc du Mathan, the grey is certainly bred to dowelloverfences.

Laura Morgan’s Toronet – another French-import – completes the field and the five-year-old is having his first start over fences this afternoon. He has dropped 13lbs in five runs for the Waltham-based trainer and the son of Martinborough – sire of Triumph Hurdle winner Majborough – is probably best watchedfornow.

Race Description This three miles, one and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for four-yearolds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 120. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
