BELL AND CUMBERLAND PLATE DAY WEDNESDAY 23 JUNE 2021 Official programme £3.00

Rousayan, winner of the 2019 AGMA Stablemate Carlisle Bell Handicap, ridden by David Egan and trained by Roger Fell.

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Carlisle Bell and Cumberland Plate Day, Last year’s Carlisle Bell and Cumberland Plate sadly was not run due to the pandemic so it is with great pride that I and the wonderful team hear at Carlisle Racecourse welcome you back this year. It has been a challenging year for everyone and we are thrilled that the popularity of this event means that we have an optimum crowd here today within the government restrictions. We ask that you all follow guidelines and respect each other while on site. We have hand sanitiser units at each door way on site and dotted around externally. We have two marquees up on site should you require shelter from the weather and we have bought in additional benches for you to sit. In order to consume your drink you must be seated, you can go to the bar to purchase your drink but please remain seated while consuming – this is a government restriction and we ask that you all do your best to support us in ensuring that you comply. We want to be able to continue welcoming crowds back to the racecourse. It looks set to be an exceptional card with some great local entries for both the Bell and the Plate. I would absolutely love to see The Navigator win the Cumberland Plate as I have a bit of a soft spot for him, and it’s always a good day when Dianne Sayer has a winner! The Eternal stakes was run at Haydock last summer as it is a pattern race, it was won by Under the Stars for James Tate. It looks set to be a very competitive renewal this year and has attracted the attention of Irish Raider Ken Condon. I would like to thank Stablemate by Agma and The British EBF for their support of today’s card along with the amazing Owners, Trainers, Stable Staff and Jockeys who continue to work so hard to ensure the continued success of this great sport. I hope you have a lucky day and we see you again soon. MOLLY DINGWALL General Manager - Carlisle Racecourse DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING SATURDAY 3 JULY EVENING RACING

CARLISLE BELL

The ‘horse of nage bells, still the property of Carlisle Corporation are pronounced possibly unique’. They are globular in form. The largest, which is 21/4 inches in diamter, is of silver gilt, and bears on a band round its centre the inscription: ÷ THE ÷ SWEFTES ÷ HORSE ÷ THES ÷ BEL ÷ TO ÷ TAK ÷ FOR ÷ MY ÷ LADE ÷ DAKAR ÷ SAKE The other bell, also of silver, is smaller in size and bears the legend 1599, H.B.M.C. being the initials of Henry Baines, Mayor of Carlisle 1599. The Bells are proudly on display today on the front of the Parade Ring Lawn.

From History of Cumberland This Lady Dacar has been identified with Elizabeth, daughter of George Talbot, fourth Earl of Shrewsbury and wife of William, Lord Dacar of Gillesland, who was governor of Carlisle early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. But the identification is fanciful. The bell given by ‘milade Dacar’ cannot be of a later date than the period in question though it may possibly be much earlier. The bells have achieved considerable fame since they were re-discovered in an old box in the town clerks office in 1880. The ‘Carlisle or Dacar Bell’ is considered to be the oldest racing bell in the annals of racing. A rival bell said to be presented by William the Lion to Lanark in 1160, was found by experts to have been made by seventeenth century silversmiths.

PLAY SMARTER

JACKHAMMER has filled the runner-up spot on both starts this year and, arriving on the back of a near two-month break, is taken to go a place better and enhance his excellent record at this course with the blinkers back on. Havana Party rates as an obvious threat under a penalty having opened his account at Hamilton last week so is feared most, ahead of Makeen and Tangled.

Lots with chances in an open handicap. TRICORN continues to go from strength to strength for his current yard and holds good claims of completing a five-timer having scored with something to spare at Thirsk last week. Croeso Cymraeg arrives on the back of a career-best victory at Leicester and rates the chief threat to Iain Jardine’s improver, with Pontefract-victor Cormier also well in the mix.
