Star Rating Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BELTANE occupied the spot he was entitled to fill when runner-up at Catterick a month ago, and with further progress likely, he is the one to beat. Choirmaster and Carbon are once-raced potential improvers for top yards, with Fylde Coast perhaps the pick of the newcomers.

JOE ROWNTREE

Joe Rowntree started his journalistic career with The Journal in Newcastle and at the age of 19 joined the Daily Telegraph Sports Desk in Manchester. After stints at the Edinburgh Evening News and Sporting Chronicle in Manchester, he was appointed the first Northern Racing Correspondent for the Sporting Life. In the late 70s he established his own Press Agency specialising in racing and for many years provided the ‘closeups’ (in running analysis) for the Racing Post reporting directly from racecourses throughout the North and Scotland. He was a regular visitor to Beverley which was one of his favourite tracks. He has also raced in Europe, Hong kong and the Middle East where he was assistant handicapper in the UAE directly responsible to the ruling family. He was always pleased to help young jockeys get on in racing and was Agent for several including the young 5lb claimerJimmy Fortune who went on to win the apprentice title in 1990 and teenage protege Ollie Pears who is now a successful trainer based in Norton with regular runners at Beverley. Last December Joe was diagnosed with a terminal illness that ended his career in racing. This hit him harder than the disease itself but he faced it with great courage and passed away peacefully in St Leonard’s Hospice York with his family by his side.

ARCTIC EMPEROR is enjoying an excellent season and looks to have good prospects of bagging a fourth win in 2021 given he can race off the same mark as when an excellent runner-up at Sandown earlier in the month.
