Star Rating Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

PLAY SMARTER

ON THE RIVER arrives in top form, run out of it only late at Nottingham last week, and with this drop back in trip a plus if anything, he looks the pick at the weights. Hollow Steel chases a hat-trick and has to be feared, with Zain Nibras a likely improver and respected also.

PLAY SMARTER

The market is usually a good guide when it comes to Bryan Smart’s newcomers and in POLITICISM he saddles one with an appealing pedigree. She certainly wouldn’t need to be out of the ordinary to make a winning debut, so the hint should be taken if there’s confidence behind her in the betting. Ana Gold shaped fairly well on her introduction at Pontefract and she is next best ahead of Cardiff.

PLAY SMARTER

Plenty in with a shout. WYNFORD has his quirks but is thriving since joining Rebecca Menzies and fancied to bag a third win of the summer off an attractive mark. Dreambird has few miles on the clock and her stout dam-side pedigree suggests she should step forward now upped to 2m so she is feared most. Selsey Sizzler and Warranty both need a second look too in a very open handicap.

PLAY SMARTER

GAINSBOURG took his form up a notch to get off the mark at Hamilton 4 weeks ago and possesses the physical scope to improve again now returning to handicap company, so he makes plenty of appeal. Golden Melody is still very much unexposed as a miler so rates a big threat under her penalty, with Ron O another to consider having run well from an easing mark at Thirsk.

TIMEFORM VIEW Back to winning ways when making all over C&D in June. Solid runners-up efforts both starts since, latterly over 9f at Redcar in July, and foolish to rule out another good run. TFRHHHHI BHA60

TIMEFORM VIEW Thirteen runs since last win in 2019. 16/1, eighth of 12 in handicap at Ayr (7.2f) 3 days ago, carrying head awkwardly 2f out. Still, likely good gallop here will suit if he can put it all together. TFRHHHII BHA59

PLAY SMARTER

This looks likely to be run at a sound pace and with that in mind it may pay to take a chance on INEXPLICABLE. He looked unlucky not to finish closer when third at Wolverhampton (8.6f) 2 weeks ago and come out on top if getting the breaks this time. Antagonize and June-C&D winner Bankawi feared most, ahead of Transition.
