Star Rating Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

PLAY SMARTER

SMULLEN failed to justify strong support on debut at Pontefract in April yet, on the back of being gelded, showed a lot more of what he’s about when finding only one too good at Hamilton in June, always just held but keeping on. He may well have more to offer and should go close with a repeat. Newcomers Jen’s Gift and Alnood both make appeal and are worth a look, along with Fylingdale.

PLAY SMARTER

Tpyically competitive big-field sprint action with a chance taken on SAM’S CALL. Having run well on his first 2 starts following a lengthy absence, he’s probably best not judged too harshly on his latest Ayr effort having not been ideally placed. He’s on a handy mark on balance and can go well, Dark Shot, the hat-trick seeking Show Yourself and Burtonwood, at likely longer odds, head the dangers.

PLAY SMARTER

BLU BOY proved too keen faced with the longest trip he’s faced when last of 6 at Doncaster (10.2f) on his latest outing. However, he’s been given some time since and, having proved progressive at this sort of trip previously, he could be worth siding with to bounce back. Newbury-scorer Diffident Spirit and Visibility head up the dangers, along with Tellmeyourstory.

ONE FOR THE LADIES needs forgiving a lesser effort on her latest start at Nottingham in May, yet she had previously shaped well when third at that venue previously and, following a short break, could well be worth chancing to get back on the up given her low-mileage profile. Shackabooah is on a workable mark on balance and rates the chief threat. Peppermint Truffle completes the shortlist.

PLAY SMARTER

RAQISA has not gone without promise in a trio of minor/maiden events at around 1m spread over 4 months this year, not seen to best effect when midfield at Ripon 2 weeks ago. The step up to 1 1/4m promises to suit now handicapping and she could be worth chancing to take a step forward. Casilli rates the chief danger, ahead of Dancin Boy ad Night Moment.

PLAY SMARTER

CAPTAIN ST LUCIFER gave a very bold showing from the front until his stamina ebbed away over 12.1f here last month and back down in trip, he ought to give a good account. Hammy End isn’t one for maximum faith but he usually runs in better races than this, with First Response also of interest from his lower turf mark.
