MIKE’S DOUBLE KEEPS HIM IN SECOND SPOT Mike Smith consolidated his second spot in the Ayr Flat Trainers Championship for 2022 by saddling a double at our July Finale Raceday last Monday. First up for the Galston trainer was the remarkably consistent Tilsitt who won the feature race of the day The Ayr & District Flower Show Handicap over 1m 2f under a fine ride from Danny Tudhope. And Wrecked It Ralph and Paddy Mathers won the 5f handicap for the stable’s second success. Mike still trails Jim Goldie by 19 points. Paul Mulrennan leads Danny Tudhope by 30 points in the Jockeys’ Championship while Summerstorm Bloodstock Ltd set the pace in the Owners Championship.

AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 3 WINS FROM 139 RIDES

Katie, who trains from Galashiels, is enjoying her best ever year on the Flat having already saddled 10 winners with three of those coming at this track. She has one runner this afternoon in Ben Asker who joined the yard at the end of June and promptly won his first start for Katie here on July 11. The four year-old was raised only 2lbs for that win and should be there or thereabouts in the Scottish Sun Ladies Night On Saturday Handicap at 3.18pm.

One of the most experience jockeys in the weighing room Tom continues to be at the top of his game and is in for a busy day with five rides. In the feature race of the afternoon, the Fergie Happel Memorial Handicap, he rides Faylaq for Ewan Whillans and this former Willie Haggas trained six year-old should run a big race while Linda Perratt’s Nazca in the Ayrshire Cancer Support Handicap is another that could give Tom the chance of a winner.

2R RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 6 WINS FROM 54 RIDES

Rebecca is a rising star of the training ranks having started out in 2014 and is enjoying her best ever year having already won 24 races. She sends out two runners this afternoon with Balalaika making her racecourse debut in the British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Novice. Stakes at 1.18pm. This youngster is well bred out of No Nay Never and has the help of Paul Mulrennan from the saddle. Rebecca also runs Russian Virtue in the Ayrshire Cancer Support Handicap at 1.48pm with Paddy Mathers riding.

Billy is one of the emerging riders in the north and had enjoyed many successes already both over jumps and on the flat. He enjoyed his best ever campaign last year riding 42 winners on the level and is totting up the winners again with top trainers like Keith Dalgleish, John Quinn and Micky Hammond all supporting him. He has a very interesting ride in the opening novice stakes on Mawada for Richard Fahey with the filly expected to go well on her racecourse debut.

PADDY MATHERS

AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 18 WINS FROM 168 RIDES

Kevin has a brilliant record here at Ayr which includes no fewer than five winners of the Ayr Gold Cup. His stable is in top form and he is represented today by Dubai Jemila in the novice stakes and Sequira Lady in the Scottish Sun Ladies Night On Saturday Handicap. The latter has only raced three times and this is her first run in a handicap off a decent mark with Tom Eaves riding. Kevin’s other runner, also ridden by Tom, is seeing a racecourse for only the second time and should give a good account.

13%

SUCCESS RATE

AYR RECORD LAST 5 YEARS 22 WINS FROM 169 RIDES

Leading light weight Paddy has an excellent record at Ayr where he has ridden many winners down the years for a host of trainers including Mike Smith and Richard Fahey. Today he will be looking forward to the mount on Glasses Up for Mike in the feature 1m 2f handicap. He has ridden this remarkable gelding to six of his seven wins and the partnership should go very close again this afternoon.

Dubai Jemila, who was well supported ahead of her debut fourth, ought to be better suited by the step up to this trip for the stable and jockey combination who won this last year, and she may be the biggest danger to ESPIONNE. A winner first-time-out at Carlisle, if she improves as hoped then she may prove good enough to successfully give 6lb to all of her rivals. The newcomers are even harder to gauge, with Peaceful Night perhaps the likeliest at this early stage of their careers, though Balalaika looks the part on her breeding.

Earn Your Stripes and Impressor have both been successful over 6f here this year, and both warrant respect on their return to 5f. Nonetheless, the vote lies with WATER OF LEITH, given he recorded a good second at this track on his most recent outing and retains the mark from that contest. He remains 4lb higher than his last winning mark and further improvement could be just around the corner for this four-year-old.

This looks tricky but it might be worth siding with the unexposed WHITE WILLOW, who was a determined winner at Thirsk on his penultimate start and has been given a break since May. Richard Fahey’s charge is narrowly preferred to What’s The Story, who hinted at a return to form at York, but is winless since August 2019. A 2lb higher mark from his latest course-and-distance success may not be enough to stop the progressive BEN ASKER in this contest. HORSE CARE AT AYR At every race meeting at Ayr there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses especially those returning after a race.
