WELCOME TO AYR

Welcome to the richest and most prestigious day of the Flat season in Scotland – the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup. With more than 110 runners contesting an eight-race card that includes the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold and Silver Cups, Scotland’s only Group race – Virgin Bet Firth of Clyde Stakes and the Virgin Bet Doonside Cup Listed race, it’s fair to say we have an embarrassment of riches this afternoon. I’d like to say a huge thanks on behalf of everyone here at Ayr to Virgin Bet, one of the UK’s fastest growing sportsbooks for their sponsorship of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival. The course I hope you agree looks terrific with Virgin Bet’s red and white branding adding lots of colour and helping to bring a real sense of theatre to the day. This is a day when dreams are achieved, when strategies come to fruition and plots are realised. This afternoon’s Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup is once again full of highly rated sprinters hoping to win the famous trophy for their connections and I am sure we will witness a race that will long live in our memories. I know that Jim Goldie has long coveted the Doonside Cup, he was thwarted last year but holds three entries, will he finally manage it with his stable star Euchen Glen. I’d also like to thank our other sponsors. The Microtech Group who have been associated with Ayr Racecourse for a long time and the Microtech Group EBF Nursery Handicap is the opening race this afternoon. The European Breeders Fund also support this race and I am grateful to them for their loyal support over many years. Gribben’s Taxis are a well-known local taxi company who have sponsored at the course several times before and their race is the Download The Gribbens Taxi App Now Handicap. Jordan Electrics are another long standing sponsor and the Jordan Electrics Ltd Handicap rounds off the day’s racing at 5.20pm. My thanks to all of our sponsors without them a day like this packed full of quality racing would just not be possible. This year as we all know has brought its challenges due to the pandemic and I’d like to thank the team here at Ayr Racecourse for their unstinted efforts to ensure this year’s Festival has gone as smoothly as possible. Finally, it’s great to see you the racegoers and I thank you for your support and hope you enjoy this very special day’s racing and entertainment.

Ayr Racecourse has held the ROA Gold Standard award for a Large Racecourse for five consecutive years.

David Brown Managing Director, Ayr Racecourse

Kevin has saddled four winners of the Ayr Gold Cup – Advanced (2007), Our Jonathan (2011), Captain Ramius (2012) and Brando (2016). This year he runs Hey Jonesy and Bielsahas who are a few fancied runners in the big race this year. He also has four horses in the Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup including last year’s winner Magical Spirit plus horses in most of the other contests today.

Hollie has enjoyed a fantastic couple of years as her career has blossomed and she is now firmly established as one of the very top jockeys in the country. She has ridden more than 100 winners in each of the last three seasons and comes to Ayr this week in great form. Hollie will be hoping to ride her first Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup winner this afternoon when she partners Popmaster for Ed Walker.

THIS DAY IN...

Nahaarr came with a rattling run to win last years Ayr Gold Cup

THE final day of the Ayr Gold Cup Festival oozes quality racing and down the years we have witnessed some memorable races with some truly class horses winning. Here are five such horses…

2020 – NAHAARR Trainer William Haggas had never trained a winner of the Ayr Gold Cup but there was a lot of market support for Nahaarr who had disappointed in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood – only his second defeat over 6f. The money poured in and he was sent off the 7-2 favourite but half way through the race victory seemed a remote hope until he worked into the clear two furlongs from home and came rattling home under Tom Marquand to collar Spanish City and win by half a length. A top performance from a top horse.

2020 – ADDEYBB Throughout the long history of the Doonside Cup there have been some memorable winners but the highest rated horse ever to win the race came last year when the William Haggas trained Addeybb, who had won two Group 1s earlier in the year in Australia, ran off a BHA mark of 122 and justified 11-10 favouritism by hitting the front inside the final furlong and winning rather cosily from another Group 1 winner Lord Glitters.

2018 & 19 – WAARIF To win the same race at the Ayr Gold Cup Festival in successive years is an amazing feat and that was what the David O’Meara trained Waarif achieved last year when landing the Class 2 mile handicap under a fine ride from Danny Tudhope. He had replaced Robbie Downey at the last minute after Danny’s intended mount was a non-runner. He got to the front two furlongs out and stayed on well to cross the line half a length in front of hot favourite Kynren. Waarif won the race 12 months earlier when ridden by Connor McGovern. Unfortunately injury has robbed him of going for three in a row but we hope to see him back at the track next year.

2016 – BRANDO One of the classiest Ayr Gold Cup performances in recent years saw Brando, trained by Kevin Ryan and ridden by Tom Eaves, storm away inside the final furlong to win by a length and a half from Growl. Running in the colours of Mrs Angie Bailey, Brando was simply in a different class from his rivals and underlined his talents when going on to win several Group races including a Group 1 in France. Brando continues in raining running at the highest level.

2005 – PRESTO SHINKO There have been many close finishes in the Ayr Gold Cup down the years but the tightest ever came in 2005 when only two short heads and a neck separated the first four horses home. For a while it looked as if the stand side had the advantage with Irish runner Majestic Times appearing to be in front only to finish third to two fast finishers on the far side – the eventual winner Presto Shinko, trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by Seb Sanders and runner up Fonthill Road, the mount of Paul Hanagan. Another far side finisher Yomato came fourth. A year later Fonthill Road won the race.

THE MICROTECH GROUP EBF NURSERY HANDICAP (CLASS 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

Our opener today is a nursery - a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular one mile race doesn’t have a maximum rating specified, so some classy two-year-olds will line up.

SECOND RACE 1.55

AYR GOLD CUP FESTIVAL

VIRGIN BET DOONSIDE CUP STAKES (CLASS 1) (LISTED RACE) RACE DESCRIPTION

This one mile, two-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 8st 12lb for 3-y-o colts and geldings and 8st 7lb for fillies the same age, with 9st 3lb for 4-y-o+ colts and geldings and 8st 12lb for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 1 or 2 win.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER ADDEYBB

SP: 11/10 Age/Weight: 6-9-10 Runners: 7 Jockey: Tom Marquand Trainer: William Haggas Summary: This was a high quality renewal of the Doonside Cup and Group 1 winning Addeybb justified favouritism after responding to his jockey’s urgings three furlongs out. Once he hit the front a furlong from home he was a cosy winner by three quarters of a length from fellow Group 1 winner Lord Glitters.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): J Goldie (48 wins from 512 runners, 9%) runs BOBBY SHAFTOE and EUCHEN GLEN and YAASER TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): M Johnston (17 wins from 102 runners, 17%) runs MAYDANNY LONGEST TRAVELLER: PALAVECINO trained by B Meehan, Manton, 383 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS Euchen Glen (115) and JUAN ELCANO (113) are some way clear of their rivals on official ratings and could be the pair to concentrate on. Jim Goldie’s stable star has won at Group 3 and Listed level already this year and demands respect, but the latter could prove tough to beat. There was no surprise he struggled in a red-hot Juddmonte International Stakes last time and his two efforts before that were very good, winning a Listed event before being touched off in Group 2 company. Maydanny looks next best. WIN: JUAN ELCANO

THIRD RACE 2.30

AYR GOLD CUP FESTIVAL

THE VIRGIN BET AYR SILVER CUP HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

After every race the official handicapper reviews all performances and alters the runners rating, either up or down, in accordance with their performance. A below-par effort could result in the drop of a point or two whilst a barnstorming victory could see a horse’s rating increase significantly. However, if a recent winner runs again soon after its win, there will not be time to reassess their performance, so they will be allotted a mandatory 6lb penalty. This handicap has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards and will be run over six furlongs - a consolation race for those who just missed out on the Gold Cup later on today.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER MAGICAL SPIRIT

SP: 18/1 Age/Weight: 4-9-4 Runners: 24 Jockey: Kevin Stott Trainer: Kevin Ryan Summary: Given a very positive ride by Kevin Stott Magical Spirit made all and went clear over a furlong out and kept on strongly to win by three and a half lengths in what was a very impressive performance.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): K Dalgleish (46 wins from 505 runners, 9%) runs SOLDIER’S MINUTE TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): T Easterby (10 wins from 93 runners, 11%) runs BOARDMAN and GOLDEN APOLLO and MUSIC SOCIETY and STAXTON WEIGHTWATCHER: TINTO won off a handicap mark of 100, his rating is now down 6lb to 94. LONGEST TRAVELLER: ROYAL SCIMITAR trained by C Cox, Hungerford, 424 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS Magical Spirit positively bolted up in this race last year and though 6lb higher today, he only missed out in a blanket finish at Ascot last time. Trainer Kevin Ryan also has strong claims with Bergerac, who won a three-year-old handicap in good style at York last time and is interesting taking on his elders. Royal Scimitar has improved since dropping to this trip, while Total Commitment ran a cracker in the Stewards’ Cup latest, but preference is for BLACKROD. Michael Dods’ charge made it two on the bounce when successful under today’s rider in an apprentice handicap at York last time and escapes a penalty for that success. The selection’s stablemate Woven also merits respect. WIN: BLACKROD

AYR GOLD CUP FESTIVAL

THE VIRGIN BET FIRTH OF CLYDE FILLIES’ STAKES (CLASS 1) (GROUP 3) (FOR THE AYRSHIRE AGRICULTURAL CHALLENGE CUP) RACE DESCRIPTION

This six-furlong race for two-year-old fillies is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, all runners will carry 9st before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for those successful in a Group 2 or Group 1.

FACT FILE

THE VIRGIN BET AYR GOLD CUP Distance Six furlongs Prize money £200,000

WHEN WAS THE RACE FIRST RUN?

The Ayr Gold Cup was first run on the original Ayr Racecourse on the south side of Ayr in 1804 and restricted to horses trained in Scotland. It was won by Chancellor, who also won the race the following year. The race was run over two miles in these days.

WHO WAS THE FIRST WINNER ON THE CURRENT COURSE?

In 1907 the Ayr Gold Cup was run over the new course and over a new distance of six furlongs. The reason for the change in distance was that the Duke of Montrose wanted his horse Raeberry to have a better chance of winning the race. The Duke’s plans were scuppered when Charis won the race.

LEADING JOCKEYS?

Since 1980 five jockeys have won the race twice – John Lowe – Sparkling Boy (1980), Final Shot (1990); Jimmy Fortune Joveworth (1989),Coastal Bluff (1996);Daryll Holland Royal Figurine (1995), Continent (2001); Adrian Nicholls Bahmaian Pirate (2000), Funfair Wane (2002); Frankie Dettori Jimmy Styles (2009), Redford (2010).

LEADING TRAINERS?

Kevin Ryan has trained the winner off the Ayr Gold Cup on four occasions with Brando (2016), Captaion Ramius (2012), Our Jonathan (2011), Advanced (2007). The winning most trainer in the race is the late David Nicholls with six wins.

DO FAVOURITES HAVE A GOOD RECORD IN THE RACE? The answer is an emphatic no. Since 1980 the only favourites to win have been Coastal Bluff in 1996 at odds of 3-1, Don’t Touch in 2015 at 6-1 and Son Of Rest who was 5-1 favourite when he dead heated with Baron Bolt last year.

AYR GOLD CUP FESTIVAL

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Virgin Bet are one of the UK’s fastest growing sportsbooks and are sponsoring the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and nine races at the meeting, including the Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup for the first time.

QUALITY COUNTS

The Ayr Gold Cup has built in stature year on year and in 2016 Brando, with a BHA rating of 110 became the highest rated horse to win the race. Lasy year’s dead heaters Son Of Rest and Baron Bolt were both rated 101. When Bahamian Pirate won the race in 200 he was rated 86. Nowadays that rating would only guarantee a run in the Bronze Cup.

REMEMBERING PAST WINNERS Chancellor won the race, in both 1804 and 1805 and there is a restaurant on the racecourse named after him as there is Roman Warrior, winner of the race in 1975. And the Be Friendly Bae is named after the horse of the same name, winner of the Gold Cup in 1967 and owned by the late Sir Peter O’Sullevan.

FIFTH RACE 3.40

AYR GOLD CUP FESTIVAL

THE VIRGIN BET AYR GOLD CUP HANDICAP (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

This afternoon’s feature race is an historic six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

LAST YEAR’S WINNERS NAHAARR

SP: 7/2F Age/Weight: 4-9-5 Runners: 24 Jockeys: Tom Marquand Trainers: William Haggas Summary: Heavily backed before the race, Nahaarr was slowly out the stalls and raced in the centre of the track. Tom Marquand bided his time before making his move over a furlong out and this talented horse quickened in the last 110 yards to win comfortably by half a length..

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): K Dalgleish (46 wins from 505 runners, 9%) runs VOLATILE ANALYST TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): T Easterby (10 wins from 93 runners, 11%) runs COUNT D’ORSAY and SUNDAY SOVEREIGN FANCY THAT: A Balding won this race in 2013 and 2017. The stable runs FIVETHOUSANDTOONE today. K Ryan won this race in 2011, 2012 and 2016. The stable runs BIELSA and HEY JONESY today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: FIVETHOUSANDTOONE trained by A Balding, Kingsclere, 375 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS Great Ambassador has taken his form to a new level this season and arrives following a victory in Listed company at York earlier in the month. However, along with Stewards’ Cup hero Commanche Falls, the pair may be disadvantaged by being drawn in stalls one and two respectively, so the vote goes to BIELSA. Kevin Ryan bids for a fifth victory in the contest and the six-year-old has been unlucky on a couple of occasions, most notably when isolated in the Stewards’ Cup. Ostilio, who ran well at Beverley last time, Gulliver and Mr Lupton all warrant considerable respect. WIN: BIELSA DECLARED RUNNERS 25

SIXTH RACE 4.15

AYR GOLD CUP FESTIVAL

THE VIRGIN BET HANDICAP (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130, so with contenders rated in three figures, this race is a high quality affair.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER JOHAN

SP: 9/2 Age/Weight: 3-9-5 Runners: 9 Jockey: Tom Marquand Trainer: William Haggas Summary: Johan raced prominently throughout and was ridden over a furlong to lead inside the last half furlong. He held off the challenge of fellow three year-old Brunch to win by a short head.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): R Fahey (32 wins from 321 runners, 10%) runs HONG KONG HARRY TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): M Johnston (17 wins from 102 runners, 17%) runs MARIE’S DIAMOND FANCY THAT: D O’Meara won this race in 2018 and 2019. The stable runs SHELIR today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: DANCE FEVER trained by C Cox, Hungerford, 424 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS CRUYFF TURN has gone from strength to strength this season and he may not be done winning just yet. A gutsy winner of a valuable contest at York on his most recent start, Tim Easterby’s charge looks to have been let off lightly with a 3lb rise. Dance Fever gets full marks for consistency and he should be in the mix once again, as well as dual course winner Hong Kong Harry. Others worth noting include last year’s third Shelir and Garden Oasis. WIN: CRUYFF TURN

SEVENTH RACE 4.50

THE DOWNLOAD THE GRIBBENS TAXI APP NOW HANDICAP (CLASS 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

The penultimate race of the afternoon is a seven-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76-95. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER ASCENSION SP: 5/2f Age/Weight: 3-9-4 Runners: 8 Jockey: Andrea Atzeni Trainer: Roger Varian Summary: The well backed favourite tracked the leaders and was ridden over two furlongs out to take over in commandinng style and win going away.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): K Dalgleish (46 wins from 505 runners, 9%) runs SUMMA PETO TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): M Johnston (17 wins from 102 runners, 17%) runs BOWMAN FANCY THAT: R Fahey won this race in 2012 and 2015. The stable runs ABDUCTION today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: ASAD trained by M Appleby, Oakham, 314 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS An open-looking handicap, but a chance is taken on TITAN ROCK,

who seemed to be unsuited by the nature of the track at Epsom when last seen. The three-year-old has been progressing well this season and he gets the vote to resume winning ways here. Bowman warrants respect bidding for the hat-trick after his successes at Carlisle and Leicester but his best form has come in small fields, while course specialists Poet’s Magic and Redarna are also likely to be on the premises. WIN: TITAN ROCK

DANGER: POET’S MAGIC

EIGHTH RACE 5.20

THE JORDAN ELECTRICS LTD HANDICAP (CLASS 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

The final race this afternoon is another handicap race, this time for stayers and run over one mile and about five furlongs. It has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which have been officially rated between 76 and 95. Like all handicaps on this afternoon’s card this means that should a horse rated 90 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85 unless a 6lb penalty is added.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER MAKE MY DAY

SP: 6/4F Age/Weight: 4-9-13 Runners: 5 Jockey: Rob Hornby Trainer: Ralph Beckett Summary: Make My Day travelled strongly to hit the front over a furlong form home. Glasses Up put up an excellent challenge but was always held by Make My Day who pulled out a litle extra to win by three quarters of a length.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): J Goldie (48 wins from 512 runners, 9%) runs SIR CHAUVELIN TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): M Johnston (17 wins from 102 runners, 17%) runs ANNANDALE LONGEST TRAVELLER: BEN LILLY trained by D Brown, Wiseton, 251 miles.

TODAY’S TIPS In a race where a number of the runners have questions to answer, it may

prove best to focus on the Tim Easterby-trained DARK JEDI, who has finished behind some talented rivals in recent starts and can take advantage of a drop in class. The three-year-old Annandale finished down the field in the Melrose last time but looks set to make a much greater impact in this grade, while Dash Of Spice raced wide on his latest outing at Hamilton and should do better granted a more favourable early set-up.

This does not reflecton the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the horse the opportunity in a calm environment, in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse! For equine care provided at Ayr see under officials at the back of this card.
