WELCOME TO AYR

WELCOME to Virgin Bet Ladies Day featuring eight quality races plus a new initiative the Style Awards with fabulous prizes on offer. The racing features the Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup plus two Class 1 Listed races – the British EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes and the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes. The Harry Rosebery invariably features some high-class two year olds and last year we witnessed the filly Winter Power showing a real turn of foot to win, showing just how good she is by winning the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York last month. Today’s field of 13 features 12 horses who have won at least once this year, so the bar is set very high once again in this contest. Our second Listed race of the afternoon is the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes and a strong field of 16 line up in this renewal. Many major stables are represented, including Joseph O’Brien who sends Russian Rover over from Ireland. John Quinn’s Keep Busy, the winner of the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Land O’Burns Fillies’ Stakes here in June, sets the standard. Immediately following the Arran Scottish Sprint we have the Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup. 25 sprinters will be charging down the six furlong home straight and it is the precursor to tomorrow’s sprint double header of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold and Silver Cups. Our Style Awards take place in the Champagne Lawns during the afternoon and there are terrific prizes in four categories – Most Stylish Lady, Most Stylish Gent, Most Stylish Hat/ Headpiece and Most Stylish Couple. There are details in this racecard on the Awards and I would like to thank all the sponsors – Beau Beau Botique, Western House Hotel, Aesthetics Ayrshire, Remus Uomo, Garage Go-Karts, La Dragon, Stephanie Gallen Millinery, Cherry Soda, and the Village Hotel, Glasgow. A very special thanks to today’s sponsors Virgin Bet, the European Breeders Fund and Remus Uomo. The loyal and continued support of our sponsors enables us to stage a meeting of this quality and be in a position to welcome so many top horses, trainers and jockeys to Ayr. In these difficult times I am acutely aware of the effort and dedication put in by the team at Ayr Racecourse to ensure this week’s Festival is highly enjoyable and most of all safe. I hope you enjoy today’s racing, our style awards and entertainment.

Ayr Racecourse has held the ROA Gold Standard award for a Large Racecourse for five consecutive years.

David Brown Managing Director, Ayr Racecourse

LEADERBOARDS

ALL TO PLAY FOR IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS With the three day Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival upon us this is a crucial time in the jockeys, trainers and owners championships for the 2021 Flat season at Ayr. Paul Mulrennan continues to lead the Jockeys Championship by nine points from Andrew Mullen with Danny Tudhope two points further away in third so it is certainly all to play for with all three riders having plenty of mounts this week. In the Trainers Championship Jim Goldie sits on 64 points with David O’Meara and Keith Dalgleish 14 points behind in joint second and once again all three will have several runners each this week. Johnnie Delta Racing have a four point lead over Paul Stewart in the Owners Championship.

Richard is a two-time Ayr Gold Cup winner with Fonthill Road in 2006 and Don’t Touch in 2015. He has also has a string of successes in both the Silver and Bronze Cups, as well as a Doonside Cup win with the brilliant mare Anna Pavlova. He has several runners today and is represented by course winner Vintage Clarets in this afternoon’s British EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes Listed Race with Paul Hanagan taking the ride.

Paul has an affinity with Ayr Racecourse and the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival having ridden his 100th course winner at this meeting last year on Exceptional in the Arran Scottish Sprint Fillies Stakes Listed Race. On tha day he also rode Umm Kulthum to win the Firth Of Clyde Stakes, Scotland’s only Group race, at our 2020 meeting. A two time champion jockey Paul rode Fonthill Road to win the 2006 Ayr Gold Cup and a year later won the Doonside Cup on Anna Pavlova. He has a good book of rides this week and partners Vintage Clarets in the British EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes Listed Race.

Down the years Michael has enjoyed great success at the Ayr Gold Cup Festival including winning the Silver Cup with Mass Rally in 2012 and he saddled Barney McGrew to be runner up to Jimmy Styles in 2009. Michael also won the inaugural running of the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Stakes, Listed Race with Intense Romance in 2018. He travels north this week with an impressive array of talent and is more than likely to be among the winners again.

One of the senior riders in the weighing room, Joe has a fantastic record at the track and rode a treble on the Friday of last year’s Ayr Gold Cup Festival. Joe also rode Queen of Bermuda to win the Group 3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes in 2018 and teamed up with Rose Of Kildare to win the same race a year later. He will have several fancied mounts this week.

PJ would dearly love to add a Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup win to the Scottish Grand National success he achieved on Hot Weld back in 2007 when he was a young jump jockey. Now one of the top Flat riders in the country this much respected jockey is sure to have some top mounts this week in most of our top races. In this afternoon’s Virgin Bet Ayr Bronze Cup he rides Secretinthepark for Rebecca Menzies.

FESTIVAL

AYR GOLD CUP

THIS DAY IN...

Winter Power ridden by David Alan, showed a frightening turn of foot in last years Harry Rosebery Stakes

VIRGIN Bet Ladies Day combines some exciting racing with glamour and entertainment. Down the years we have seen some top horses in action on this day and here are a few who stand out.

2020 - WINTER POWER The Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes is always a highlight of the Friday of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and last year Winter Power, trained by Tim Easterby and ridden by David Allan, gave a stunning performance to burst through over a furlong out and run on to win convincingly. She has raced five times since her win here winning two Listed races, a Group 3 and then just last month the Group 1 Nunthorpe at York.

2015 – EXCEPTIONAL

Owned by Cheveley Park Stud and trained by Richard Fahey, Exceptional came into the Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies Sprint, Listed Race on the back of a disappointing run at Pontefract. But on softer ground she turned that form around and gave Paul Hanagan his 100th Ayr win. This was a class performance that brought the filly black type.

2015 – QUIET REFLECTION

Quiet Reflection won the Harry Roseberry Stakes Listed race in 2015 in great style. She was dropping back to five furlongs having run her previous race over six furlongs. Given a positive ride from Graham Lee she was always travelling well and sprinted clear to win by four lengths from Field Of Vision. She went on to win two Groups 1s and several Group 2s and 3s. An outstanding filly who was sold at the Tattersalls Mares Sale in 2017 for 2,100,000 guineas.

2012 – GARSWOOD

Richard Fahey has a superb record at this Festival and in 2012 he saddled Garswood to win the Shadwell Stud Harry Rosebery Stakes with Tony Hamilton riding. Returning from a seven week break he was in the rear before switched to the outside two furlongs out coming with a sustained run to win cosily by three quarters of a length from Zoola. He went on to win a Group 2 at Goodwood and the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest.

AZURE BLUE built on her encouraging debut third when a slightly unlucky second at Carlisle, being short of room on more than one occasion before rattling home to get within half a length of the winner. With today’s extra furlong unlikely to pose any problems, she could make it third-time lucky. Forgivable also steps up in trip following two promising displays over 6f and he warrants respect, while Kevin Ryan looks to have a couple of solid chances with Green Team and newcomer Marhaba The Champ.

Locke has to be respected after winning with some authority at Windsor last time, but marginal preference is for the other penalised runner in the race in STRAITS OF MOYLE. Richard Fahey’s charge travelled like the best horse in the race at Carlisle last time and finished off the race accordingly. Barry McHugh retains the partnership with the gelding and he could go in again. The selection’s stablemate Final Account ran well at Hamilton last time and gives the Musley Bank trainer a strong hand, while Redcar winner Lethal Levi and the in-form Kendred Fire are also worthy of note.

THIRD RACE 2.10

THE BRITISH EBF STALLIONS HARRY ROSEBERY STAKES (CLASS 1) (LISTED RACE) RACE DESCRIPTION

Listed races are high-class and only bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level; many of the runners in this five-furlong contest for two-year-olds will be using this race as a springboard to even better things. Initially, weight is allocated according to sex, before penalties are given to horses that have previously won at this level or above. These penalties range from 3lb for a Listed success to 5lb for a Pattern race victory.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER WINTER POWER

SP: 7/1 Age/Weight: 2-8-12 Runners: 11 Jockey: David Allan Trainer: Tim Easterby Summary: Winter Power travelled eye-catchingly throughout the five furlongs and cruised into the race to lead over a furlong out and despite edging left inside the final furlong ran all the way to the line and had half a length to spare over Nomadic Empire.

RACE STATISTICS YOUR RACE-BY-RACE FACTS, FANCIES & STATISTICS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): K Dalgleish (46 wins from 499 runners, 9%) runs EDWARD CORNELIUS and ETERNAL HALO TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): W Haggas (11 wins from 48 runners, 23%) runs CANONIZED LONGEST TRAVELLER: ERNEST RUTHERFORD trained by M O’Callaghan, Ireland. GEOCENTRIC trained by G M Lyons, Ireland.

TODAY’S TIPS Canonized looked a touch unlucky at Longchamp last time and she could have a big say in this contest with a clearer passage. Project Dante’s performance at Newmarket appeared to suggest that he may appreciate the drop back to 5f, and if he can reproduce his run in the Norfolk he could be a leading contender as well, but PEGGY SIOUX gets the vote. She produced an eye-catching performance when beating Edward Cornelius convincingly on her debut, despite showing greenness, and with further improvement likely it would be no surprise to see her involved in the finish. FOURTH RACE 2.45

ARRAN SCOTTISH SPRINT EBF FILLIES STAKES (CLASS 1) (LISTED RACE) RACE DESCRIPTION

Another high-quality Listed contest, this time run over five and a half furlongs and for fillies aged three-years-old and above who haven’t won a Group 1 race after March 31st 2018. Again, many of the competitors here will be looking to graduate into Group-class company, making for an exciting race. Three-year-olds will have to carry 8st 12lb and four-year-olds and above are burdened with 9st before penalties are added according to the class of race a filly has won in the last six months - 3lb for a Listed race, 5lb for a Group 3 and 7lb for a victory in a Group 2 contest.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER EXCEPTIONAL

SP: 11/2 Age/Weight: 3-8-12 Runners: 16 Jockey: Paul Hanagan Trainer: Richard Fahey Summary: Tracking the leaders, Exceptional raced in a group six horses and made her challenge inside the final furlong getting her nose in front in the last 110 yards to beat Last Empire by a length. Her sister Don’t Touch is a previous Ayr Gold Cup winner and this win gave Paul Hanagan his 100th Ayr success.

TODAY’S TIPS LAVENDER hasn’t got her head in front since winning on debut at Navan in May, but her recent second in this company at Tipperary suggested Joseph Murphy’s filly was ready to strike again having finished strongly. Keep Busy gives weight to all of her rivals having scored at this track in June in this grade and she commands respect dropping back in trip after trying 6f in France last month. Others worthy of the shortlist include Tweet Tweet, Teresa Mendoza and Dandalla. WIN: WHITE LAVENDER

Barry McHugh has won the race twice on Baldemar in 2009 and Coolminx in 2011.

AYR GOLD CUP FESTIVAL

THE VIRGIN BET AYR BRONZE CUP HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a six-furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER ROUNDHAY PARK

SP: 13/2 Age/Weight: 5-8-12 Runners: 23 Jockey: Faye McManoman (5) Trainer: Nigel Tinkler Summary: Nigel Tinkler fancied the chances of Roundhay Park before the race but had to watch and suffer as he was bumped at the start and had to race in the rear. However his able jockey Faye McManoman didn’t panic and made her challenge over 1f out and led inside the final furlong to win by a length from Dark Defender.

TODAY’S TIPS MARK’S CHOICE won the Great St Wilfrid consolation at Ripon before

finishing an unlucky second over the same C&D at the end of last month. The five-year-old boasts winning form at the track and makes plenty of appeal, despite this being a hugely competitive event on paper. Call Me Ginger carries an 8lb penalty for victories at Hamilton and Doncaster, but he is still 2lb well in and is capable of a strong challenge. Others for the shortlist include Ghathanfar, Twilight Madness and Danzan.

The three-year-old HAVEYOUMISSEDME posted his best piece of form when winning at Newcastle earlier this month, running on strongly in the closing stages and pulling clear with the runner-up. The Iain Jardine-trained gelding steps up in trip this time and may prove too strong for his rivals under a 6lb penalty, with Prince Imperial tipped to chase him home, having performed respectably in better company than this on his latest start. The prolific winner Let Me Be returns from a short break and is also worth considering.

King Of Tonga is likely to make his presence felt as he has some solid recent form to his name, but winning doesn’t come easy to him as you have to go back to November 2019 for his last taste of success. In contrast, Merricourt has won twice over this course and distance in recent months and could be a factor, though marginal preference is for LITTLE TED. A winner of a seller at Ripon two starts ago, beating a horse rated 18lb higher off level weights, he showed he can compete off his current mark when second at Chester last time despite being drawn wide.

A case can be made for several of these, but a chance is taken on FLYING MOON, who is now 2lb below his last winning mark. The five-year-old gelding has a fine record at this track, with two C&D wins, and he gets the vote to add another victory to his career tally. Motarajel took a step forward at Beverley last time and could be the main danger off a 4lb higher mark, while Bringitonboris, Clay Regazzoni and Ron O are others to consider.

You can become a friend of Racing Welfare by donating as little as £5 per month

“For every horse that appears on a racecourse, there is a large group of individuals that have made it happen. They are not in the limelight, but they are totally dedicated to their work. When these people face difficulties in their lives, they need somewhere to turn, and Racing Welfare is there for each and every one of them.” - HRH The Princess Royal President of Racing Welfare

Your £5 a month will allow a retired beneficiary to meet up with old friends and reminisce about their time in the racing industry. HORSE CARE AT AYR At every race meeting at Ayr there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses especially those returning after a race. MEDIA COVERAGE & RECORDING FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES All Attendees (which for the purposes of this clause also includes horses and for the avoidance of any doubt includes families with children) are reminded that many races and fixtures are given coverage on television, radio and in print and various other forms of media. By entering the Racecourse Attendees are accepting they may appear in such coverage which may also include printed or electronic material used for the promotion of the Racecourse. Accordingly, Attendees shall have no right to object to their inclusion in any much coverage whether produced by the Racecourse or by third parties authorised by the Racecourse.
