AYR GOLD CUP

WELCOME TO AYR

WELCOME to the opening day of the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival and the first of three days of quality racing and excellent entertainment. It is a privilege to see crowds back in their numbers after last year’s Festival was run behind closed doors due to covid restrictions and I am sure everyone is looking forward to savouring the special atmosphere that a racing crowd brings. I am also thrilled to welcome Virgin Bet as sponsors of the Ayr Gold Cup Festival for the first time and everybody connected with Ayr Racecourse is proud to have such an exciting brand as title sponsors. Sponsorship has never been as important to racing than it is now in these difficult times and we are looking forward to working with Virgin Bet this week and hopefully for many years to come. Virgin Bet is the UK’s fastest growing sportsbook and to have them team up with Scotland’s biggest and richest flat racing Festival seems like a perfect fit. Our thanks go also to today’s other sponsors – the European Breeders Fund, BrandingHub Signs Design Print, Western House Hotel and Ayrshire Cancer Support whose continued support allows us to sustain the calibre of racing we have throughout this week. Today’s feature race is the Virgin Bet Kilkerran Cup and we have a fascinating contest in prospect. Nicholas T has won seven times here and earlier this season won the prestigious Northumberland Plate at Newcastle. His stable mate at the Jim Goldie yard Tommy G has also won seven times at the track and a further five horses in the line-up are dual winners here. The team at Ayr has worked tirelessly to ensure this Festival is a success and I would like to thank them all for their effort and dedication. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival.

Ayr Racecourse has held the ROA Gold Standard award for a Large Racecourse for five consecutive years.

David Brown Managing Director, Ayr Racecourse

LEADERBOARDS

ALL TO PLAY FOR IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS With the three day Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival upon us this is a crucial time in the jockeys, trainers and owners championships for the 2021 Flat season at Ayr. Paul Mulrennan continues to lead the Jockeys Championship by nine points from Andrew Mullen with Danny Tudhope two points further away in third so it is certainly all to play for with all three riders having plenty of mounts this week. In the Trainers Championship Jim Goldie sits on 64 points with David O’Meara and Keith Dalgleish 14 points behind in joint second and once again all three will have several runners each this week. Johnnie Delta Racing have a four point lead over Paul Stewart in the Owners Championship.

Karl has been one of the leading trainers in the country for many years now and tends to send a big team of horses from his Yorkshire base to Ayr for the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup Festival. Karl usually has a particularly strong string of juveniles and is represented by Teddy’s Profit, who has shown promise in both his starts, in the EBF Novice Stakes. Another interesting runner from the yard is Invincibly in the second division of the Luxury Breaks At Western House Hotel Handicap. This gelding showed improved form at Haydock last time out.

David, born just 12 miles from the track in Irvine, loves this Festival and rode Winter Power to win the Harry Rosebery Stakes last year for Tim Easterby. He teams up with Cassy O in the Virgin Bet Handicap and this horse won the corresponding race last year and went on to win again 24 hours later. David rides another Tim Easterby horse Highwaygrey in today’s feature race the Virgin Bet Kilkerran Cup.

The most successful trainer in history has a few runners here this week and will be hoping to be among the winners. Mark saddles course winner Fairmac in the Kilkerran Cup and Joe Fanning rides the horse who won the opening race on the Friday of this meeting last year and then won over course and distance here in July. Mark’s two year-olds are also to be feared, he runs recent Salisbury winner Outbreak in the opening race, the EBF Novice Stakes.

All eyes will be on Paul in Saturday’s Virgin Bet Doonside Cup when he rides Euchen Glen a horse he has ridden to victory no fewer than eight times. He also has mounts in most of the other feature races at the Festival and will have a realistic chance of a first Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup victory on Pendleton for Michael Dods. He is enjoying another excellent season and looks to have an outstanding chance this afternoon on Rory for Jim Goldie in the Branding Hub Handicap.

Jim always has his horses primed for big runs at the Ayr Gold cup Festival and this year will be no exception. He is enjoying another excellent season and a few of his stable stalwarts will be in action over the three days of the Festival including Euchen Glen in the Virgin Bet Doonside Cup on Saturday. Another great servant to the yard is Nicholas T, who contests this afternoon’s feature race the Virgin Bet Kilkerran Cup. The Goldie camp will be very disappointed if they aren’t among the winners this week.

This afternoon the Hart-Quinn combination team up on First Impression in the Virgin Bet Kilkerran Cup, a race the horse won last year when partnered by Ben Curtis.

THIS DAY IN...

First Impression (Right) Fending off his rivals

The opening day of the Virgin Ayr Gold Cup Festival has seen some stunning performances down the years these include…

2020 – FIRST IMPRESSION

Trainer John Quinn likes to target the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup with his horses and last year was no exception and First Impression was primed to run a big race in the feature race of the afternoon the Kilkerran Cup and certainly didn’t disappoint. Given a confident ride from Ben Curtis he locked horns with Spirit Dancer over a furlong out and it was a ding-dong battle all the way to the line where he prevailed by three quarters of a length.

2019 – BARDO CONTIGUO

Running in Division Two of the mile handicap this Roger Varian trained three year-old had been off the track for three months prior to this outing and did well to overcome trouble in running to win rather cosily under a good ride from David Egan. Shortly after the Ayr race the gelding was sold to race in Ireland where he is still competing at tracks like Leopardstown, the Curragh and Balinrobe.

2016 - SECRET NUMBER

Godolphin have a great record in the Doonside Cup and when it was temporarily switched from being run on the Saturday to the opening day they once again produced a horse on top of his game when Secret Number won for Saeed bin Suroor and Danny Tudhope. Returning from a near year-long absence from the track the lightly raced six year-old was far too good for the opposition and won with ease from Motdaw. In 2017 he won a Group 2 contest in Turkey.

2013 – DREAM WALKER

Dream Walker was a four year-old when he won the Class 4 1m handicap on the opening day of the Ayr Gold Cup Festival eight years ago. Ridden by apprentice Phillip Prince and trained by Brian Ellison he tracked the leaders and came with a well-timed run to win comfortably. He won six more races bringing his career tally to 11 wins and also enjoyed a spell in Ireland.

GLOBAL HUMOR has registered two of his three wins this year over course and distance and, having finished well over the minimum distance at Haydock last time, the six-year-old is tipped to produce a big run now returning to this trip. Northern Express still gives the impression that he has more in the locker and the removal of the hood looks set to help his cause, while fellow three-year-old Darvel also has headgear removed on this occasion and can get involved.

EMPIRESTATEOFMIND has continued to improve since having blinkers applied and John Quinn’s gelding is capable of landing the hat-trick following successes at Musselburgh and Thirsk. Mi Capricho was a disappointing fifth behind the selection at the Scottish venue on his penultimate outing before returning to form at Hamilton the following week. A chance is taken on BRINGITONBORIS, who served notice of a return to form at Newcastle earlier in the month. Keith Dalgleish’s charge won a division of this contest last year off 4lb lower and he looks to hold every chance of doing so again with Joe Fanning returning to the saddle. Both Daniel Deronda and Invincibly warrant serious consideration following strong runner-up efforts earlier in the month. Newcastle winner Tilsitt has a solid record around here despite never winning, while Diamond Haze cannot be overlooked.

MY LITTLE QUEENS has been improving this season after wins at Hamilton and Musselburgh. The daughter of Mastercraftsman has produced her best form on the turf and gets the vote to continue her progression here, after a fifth-placed effort on the all-weather at Newcastle. Bollin Margaret should appreciate running against her own sex and is likely to be on the premises, while Alyara also has claims after her breakthrough success at Carlisle.

SIXTH RACE 4.45

VIRGIN BET KILKERRAN CUP HANDICAP (CLASS 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

This one mile, two-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards is a handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70. This particular handicap is also open to horses rated 101 and 102 as well as horses rated 80 and below.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER FIRST IMPRESSION

SP: 17/2 Age/Weight: 3-8-7 Runners: 12 Jockey: Ben Curtis Trainer: John Quinn Summary: A really exciting running of the Kilkerran Cup saw First Impression driven by Ben Curtis to join issue with Spirit Dancer two furlongs out. A ding dong battle ensued with the John Quinn runner prevailing by three quarters of a length.

TODAY’S TIPS Fairmac has been a really consistent sort of late and could run well on his sixth start since the beginning of August, while Cockalorum has yet to finish out of the first three this term and runs off the same mark as when third in a big field at York. A winner over a mile on turf at Carlisle earlier in the season, Keith Dalgleish’s runner has performed well over this trip at Newcastle the last twice and could go one better than last time. THRILLA IN MANILA bounced back to form at Catterick when finishing half a length behind Militia and that looks strong form, especially as the race was won in a quick time. He gets the vote, while Rory has been progressing nicely and also looks a big player in this contest. Big Thanks disappointed last time but he showed plenty of promise at Beverley on his penultimate start, so he is not without a chance if he can put that latest run behind him.

Handicap debutants Tendentious and Keep The Faith have both shaped as though staying would be their game and merit respect, while Wor Willie struck in handicap company last time but has been given a 5lb higher mark to contend with here. Wily veteran Nakeeta is likely to be staying on when others have cried enough but a chance is taken on GRACES QUEST. Iain Jardine’s filly beat some higher-rated rivals when landing a seller at Musselburgh last time and could be a major player off bottom weight.

HORSE CARE AT AYR At every race meeting at Ayr there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses especially those returning after a race. MEDIA COVERAGE & RECORDING FOR PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES All Attendees (which for the purposes of this clause also includes horses and for the avoidance of any doubt includes families with children) are reminded that many races and fixtures are given coverage on television, radio and in print and various other forms of media. By entering the Racecourse Attendees are accepting they may appear in such coverage which may also include printed or electronic material used for the promotion of the Racecourse. Accordingly, Attendees shall have no right to object to their inclusion in any much coverage whether produced by the Racecourse or by third parties authorised by the Racecourse. Furthermore by entering the Racecourse each Attendee consents to the passing of still or moving images of them to third parties authorised by the Racecourse for the purposes of the production of printed or electronic material to be used solely for the Promotion of the Racecourse.
