CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the start of the Jumps season at Ascot. When we ran Royal Ascot behind closed doors back in June, I don’t think any of us thought we would still be racing without crowds come the start of the winter sport. Today would normally be one of our popular family days, with fireworks. We dearly look forward to welcoming the public back but in the meantime, are delighted to be hosting another exciting card on ITV and Sky Sports Racing. Today’s highlight is the £80,000 Grade 3 Sodexo Gold Cup Handicap Chase over three miles. Last year’s impressive winner Vinndication heads to Wetherby today for the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase, where he will take on the highest-rated horse in training and Ascot favourite Cyrname, with connections of both horses seeking to explore Gold Cup possibilities. Today’s renewal of the Sodexo Gold Cup features plenty of familiar names to get Jumps fans excited about the coming season including Black Corton, Blaklion, Might Bite, Mister Malarky and Walk In The Mill. Sodexo, who we partner with on our hospitality wing, 1711 By Ascot, also support the preceding two mile Listed Handicap Hurdle with our grateful thanks. Also sponsoring today are the UK Tote, who are backing four races on the card. I encourage you to try the new “Survivor” bet which was launched as an on-course bet at Royal Ascot and is now being widely rolled out. The outcome of the concluding tote.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat race may well be worth following in the future, with last year’s race throwing up the Grade 2 Dovecote Hurdle winner Highway One O Two and Third Time Lucki who was third in the Grade 1 Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. The 2018 running was won by the high-class Emitom and today we will see the exciting Arturus - a three-parts brother to the dual Champion Hurdle winner Hurricane Fly make his debut. Our thanks go to the UK Tote and to our further race sponsors; Ascot Underwriting and Fever-Tree.

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman WELCOME 3

2020-21 JUMPS SEASON PREVIEW

CYRNAME (LEFT) GETS THE BETTER OF ALTIOR IN LAST YEAR’S RENEWAL OF THE GRADE 2 1965 CHASE

On a day’s racing that would usually be rounded off by a spectacular fireworks display, the new Jumps season at Ascot will nevertheless get underway with a resounding bang this afternoon – and there is much to look forward to throughout the 2020/21 campaign. The second day of our next meeting (Saturday 21st November) features a pair of Grade 2 contests. The Coral Hurdle has has been won by numerous Champion Hurdlers in the past, including Dawn Run, Hardy Eustace, Annie Power and Faugheen. This year’s renewal could see the seasonal bow of the former Cheltenham Festival and Grade 1 winning-mare Laurina, an interesting new recruit to the championship yard of Paul Nicholls from Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins. On the same card, The 1965 Chase is expected to act as an early-season target for a number of top staying chasers being primed for the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. Last year’s running saw the Nicholls-trained Cyrname end the 19-race unbeaten run of Nicky Henderson’s magnificent dual Champion Chaser Altior with an exemplary performance over fences. Britain’s highest-rated chaser heads to Wetherby for the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase this afternoon, stepping up to three miles for the first time since his 2019 King George defeat to stablemate Clan Des Obeaux. We hope to welcome Cyrname back to Ascot - a course at which he has won three times - later this season. The highlight of our two-day Christmas meeting is The Long Walk Hurdle on Saturday 19th December. As one of Britain’s most prestigious long-distance hurdle races, the Grade 1 has been claimed by many of the very best staying hurdlers including Baracouda, Big Buck’s, Thistlecrack and Paisley Park, all of whom landed the spoils en route to Cheltenham Festival glory in the Stayers’ Hurdle. The previous day features a pair of novice contests, both of them interesting trials ahead of Cheltenham next March. 4

2020-21 JUMPS SEASON PREVIEW

Quality racing continues to come thick and fast in the new year. Another valuable card on Saturday 23rd January is spearheaded by the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase, a high-class affair which should attract some of the most elite two-mile chasers in training. The race has been won by the likes of Desert Orchid, Sprinter Sacre, Sire De Grugy, Altior and the hugely popular three-time winner Un De Sceaux, who in the 2020 renewal finished second to Philip Hobbs’ stable star Defi Du Seuil in one of last season’s most hotly-anticipated clashes. The card also includes a Grade 2 Mares’ Hurdle - registered as The Warfield - which in recent years has been won by Grade 1 winners Vroum Vroum Mag, Bitofapuzzle and La Bague Au Roi, as well as Grand National runner-up Magic Of Light, the winner of the last two renewals. Saturday 20th February is likely to be one of the very last chances to see some of racing’s biggest names in action ahead of Cheltenham the following month. The Grade 1 Betfair Ascot Chase, run over 2m5f, is yet another seasonal highlight boasting an impressive roll of honour, previous winners including the brilliant Kauto Star, Cue Card, Silviniaco Conti and Cyrname. The card also includes the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase, an important stepping stone to The Festival’s RSA Chase which has been won by many fine horses over the years, none more so than the great One Man in 1994. Last year’s edition was taken by the progressive Copperhead, who overcame testing conditions to seal a hat-trick of consecutive victories over fences, galloping home by 17 lengths. Colin Tizzard’s hugely exciting chaser lines up at Wetherby for the Grade 2 West Yorkshire Hurdle this afternoon before a tilt at the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury, a race for which he is currently second favourite. Although racegoers will - for now - be unable to experience the action at the track itself, we hope you enjoy what promises to be a thrilling season packed with established stars and rising talent alike, and look forward to welcoming you back to Ascot in the future.

5th Race 2.32pm The Fever-Tree Novices’ Hurdle Race (GBB Race)

This handicap hurdle for novice three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120 is run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 16-18

2nd Race 12.47pm The tote.co.uk Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race (GBB Race) (Div II)

This is the second division of Race 1. Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result, more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run, which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority allows the race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions. PAGES 22-24

3rd Race 1.20pm The Ascot Underwriting Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase (GBB Race)

This steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140 is run over two miles and about three furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 140 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 135. PAGES 28-30

4th Race 1.55pm The tote.co.uk Handicap Steeple Chase (Listed Race)

Listed races are high class and only bettered by a Grade 1, 2 or 3 contest. In effect, it is an intermediate level and many of the four-year-olds and upwards lining-up in this steeple chase run over two miles and about one furlong will be using the race as a springboard to possibly even better things.

6

CONTENTS

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular two-mile novices’ hurdle is for horses aged four and upwards. PAGES 40-42

6th Race 3.05pm The Sodexo Handicap Hurdle Race (Listed Race) (GBB Race)

Like the 1.55pm contest, this is a Listed race, although this particular handicap hurdle is to be run over two miles and has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating, this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised, they are allotted a mandatory penalty – 6lb in this race. PAGES 44-46

7th Race 3.40pm The Sodexo Gold Cup Handicap Steeple Chase (Grade 3) (GBB Race)

This Grade 3 contest is a three-mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 48-50

8th Race 4.17pm The tote.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race)

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race, or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred to, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutants or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the Flat or in hurdle races or steeple chases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, five and six, and will be run over two miles.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bears little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with The Queen Anne Stakes.

8

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of The Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius could emulate next year.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents The Gold Cup and The Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won The Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot in all. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with The Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 11 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - most recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. “We have 4 Zoustar foals on the farm. They all have great presence, good movers and are good-looking foals. I think these Zoustar’s are what every breeder hopes for and when they see them they’re going to sell very well.” David Cox, Baroda Stud

HHHH Won his bumper on good ground but has looked fine on softer over hurdles; however, he was left for dead by the winner when penalised at Fontwell (2m1f, soft) and surprising if there’s not something even smarter lurking here; will do well to win giving Official BHA Rating 122 weight all round.

HHH Won two of his eight starts on the Flat, his wins coming at trips just beyond 1m in Germany (soft/AW); found Group/ Listed company a struggle when last seen in 2018 and although no surprise should he make a hurdler for top connections, this is no easy introduction after so long out. HHHH €55,000 3yo out of a half-sister to smart chaser Chief Dan George, so he’s bred to stay well; narrowly failed to justify favouritism in a Warwick bumper (good) but he is bred to do better with experience and the stable has won this with My Tent Or Yours and Altior in recent seasons. HH All four Flat wins came at Yarmouth (1m-1m3.5f); peak RPR of 104 is an indication to his high level of ability but he has mostly steered clear of soft going throughout his career and ground conditions are a concern for this first run over hurdles. Official BHA Rating -

HHH Looked as good as ever when winning quite comfortably for Theo Gillard at Chepstow (2m, good) three weeks ago, his ninth hurdle success, and a subsequent 4lb rise doesn’t look excessive; has won on soft ground but may be ideally suited by a sounder surface. Official BHA Rating 142
