CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the second day of the September Racing Weekend at Ascot. As we head into the autumn of the 2021 Flat season thoughts inevitably start to turn towards 2022 and the opening two races today will both feature some exciting two-year-olds who will hopefully have big futures ahead of them. Today’s feature race is the Lavazza Stakes, a Heritage Handicap over a mile and a half for three-year-olds worth £75,000. Roger Varian has won the last two renewals with Shandoz and Apparate so it may be worth paying attention to his only runner this time – Alfaadhel. I would also like to thank all of our other race sponsors today including the European Breeders Fund, Fever-Tree and the Carey Group who have named our fourth race in support of the Lighthouse Club, an extremely valuable charity working in the construction industry. You will see that two of our own local partners – First Days and the Windsor & Eton Sea Cadets – have races in their names as well and you can find out more about those valuable community organisations in these pages. Additionally, we are promoting National Racehorse Week through the naming of our opening race. You can find out more about this exciting initiative that will be the first ever nationwide celebration of the racehorse that takes place from 12th-19th September by visiting the website - nationalracehorseweek.uk/ Today’s racecard also features a round up of the Retraining of Racehorses National Championships which took place last week at Aintree and included a horse called American, who won a novice hurdle at Ascot in 2015 when trained by Harry Fry. The British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap Stakes, the fifth race on the card, is often a race worth following. Last year it was won by Dreamloper who returned to Ascot this year to win the Group 3 Valiant Stakes in July. Away from Ascot today is the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock where several of the leading British sprinters will clash. The field includes this year’s Jersey Stakes winner Creative Force and Art Power who was a winner at Royal Ascot in 2020. Glen Shiel will line up under Hollie Doyle, the same pairing that were successful in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes last October and no doubt they will be back on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot next month to try and defend that crown. I hope you have a great day and we look forward to seeing you again soon at Ascot. Sir Francis Brooke Bt. Her Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

1st Race 2.00pm The National Racehorse Week British EBF Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

5th Race 4.20pm The Iron Stand British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

This seven furlongs Novice Stakes is restricted to two-year-olds but in order to take part all of the runners must meet certain conditions. Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run in a maximum of six races are eligible to run. Weights are set according to sex before previous winners are allocated penalties depending on the level at which they have been successful. PAGES 22-24

2nd Race 2.35pm The First Days British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

This one mile Novice Stakes is also restricted to two-year-olds but the same rules apply. However, as this race is for fillies’ only, penalties are set depending on the level at which they have been successful previously. PAGES 28-30

3rd Race 3.10pm The Lavazza Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

This race is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 36-38

4th Race 3.45pm The Careys Foundation Supporting The Lighthouse Club Handicap Stakes

This race is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. Similar to the previous race, having no rating restrictions attached to it has still impacts the higher rated horses as they still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, so excpect this racer to be very competitive too!

2

CONTENTS

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. PAGES 44-46

6th Race 4.55pm The Fever-Tree Handicap Stakes

This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb. PAGES 48-50

7th Race 5.30pm The Windsor & Eton Sea Cadets Handicap Stakes

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes.

6

A S H O RT H I STO RY

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents the Gold Cup and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - more recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. Tom Ryall is a Racing Groom, working for racehorse trainer Harry Fry. Here is his career story. “Let me start from the beginning. In common with many youngsters, my ambition from an early age in my home town of Doncaster was to become a professional footballer. I was involved with local teams from the age of four, and the sport consumed my childhood. However, after I had been with been with my Sunday league team Barnburgh & Harrington for over 12 years, the club called time, leaving me somewhat puzzled about what to do with my spare time and career. In June 2014, having successfully completed my A-levels, I was accepted by Leeds Metropolitan University to study business and sport management. After much discussion with close family and friends, I decided to decline the offer in favour of pursuing a career in the horseracing industry. Some might say it was a bold move, but I felt that I was ready to get out into the real world, so to speak, and start my own life adventure. My strong interest in horseracing came from my father’s side of the family. After owning a couple of horses as part of a syndicate, I went to local racedays from an early age, and this led to a family friend introducing me to the National Horseracing College, which is situated only ten miles from my home in Doncaster. After researching what the college offered, I was successful in my application for a place on the 12-week residential course to part take in the Horse Care and Riding Level 1 Diploma. That was another bold move, as I had zero experience riding horses of any kind. However, I was determined to be successful in the industry. After completing the course, I was sent to the stable of Harry Fry, an up-and-coming National Hunt trainer who was once pupil assistant to multiple champion trainer Paul Nicholls, for whom I worked as a Racing Groom, alongside completing Levels 2 & 3 in the Horse Care and Riding Diploma. My time with Mr Fry in Dorset has been invaluable, as I have experienced the racing industry in a totally hands-on role. I believe this is a huge starting point in any individual’s racing career, as it introduces them to how much time and thought is put in to the training of each individual horse. After four seasons, I was promoted to the role of Assistant Head Groom, which meant taking on more responsibility, as I was in charge in his and the assistant trainer’s absence. The time working in a racing yard has been invaluable and has given me an unbelievable insight into what actually happens behind the scenes within the racing industry.” Find out more about careers, jobs and training in horseracing, visit: www.careersinracing.com and start your journey.

WINDSOR AND ETON SEA CADETS Today we are highlighting the work of the Windsor and Eton branch of the Sea Cadets. Based right on the River Thames, the charity aims to give young people a fun and engaging environment in which to learn skills with confidence and to become the best possible versions of themselves. The charity runs a huge a variety of courses, including sports, academic qualifications and practical skills, as well as competitions. With their excellent base on the river, they spend a lot of time on the water, rowing, kayaking, paddle-boarding and powerboating. Their main objective is to give young people access to as many courses, opportunities, trips, offshore experiences, international exchanges, competitions and other events as possible! Most of the activities are heavily subsidised and they offer bursaries, where possible, to ensure that all young people have the chance to get involved. They’ve been in existence for over 100 years; helping young people find a sense of community, pride and self-worth. Click here to find out more about what it’s like to be part of the sea cadets. In recognition of their work, we have named our 5.30pm race “The Windsor & Eton Sea Cadets Handicap Stakes”. The charity is also our official bucket collectors today, so please support if you can. To find out more about the charity, visit: www.sea-cadets.org/windsoreton or pop down on a Tuesday or Thursday evening to see for yourself. Registered Charity No. 313013

THE ASCOT ENQUIRY Ray Dawson Ray Dawson had his best Ascot raceday to date when winning the “Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes” on Zain Claudette in July of this year. The popular Irishman is taking nothing for granted and following a spell on the side-lines through injury last year he is making the most of every opportunity that comes his way. Taking heed of the advice he was given when starting out, Ray can be found riding for some of the leading trainers and the 2021 season will no doubt go down as his best yet. In the Ascot Enquiry Ray shares his favourite Ascot moment so far, his racing heroes and the star-studded line-up of guests he would like to invite to Ascot to enjoy the racing. 1. Your favourite Ascot moment so far? Winning the “Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes” on Zain Claudette in July. 2. Did you always want to be a jockey? No, I wanted to be a rugby player until I was 15 years old and then decided to become a jockey. 3. Did you grow up riding ponies? Yes, I had a pony growing up and did plenty of showjumping and hunting so I was lucky in that respect. 4. Your racing hero? I would have to say both Ruby Walsh and Mick Kinane, I couldn’t choose between them! 5. Best advice ever given to you? Work as hard as you possibly can and don’t give up on your dreams. 6. The one horse from racing history you would have liked to ride? Frankel – doesn’t everyone say him? 7. The one Ascot race you would like to win? The Gold Cup at Royal Ascot would be fantastic. 8. If you were not a jockey which job would you be doing? Absolutely no idea. It would be a bit late to become a rugby player and I am absolutely useless at everything else! 9. Advice you would give to a wannabe jockey? The same advice that was given to me, work hard and don’t give up. 10. Five famous people (dead or alive) you would invite to a box at Ascot to enjoy a day’s racing? Robert Downey Jr. as he seems a nice chap, Britney Spears because she seems good fun, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robin Williams. 52 T H E A SCOT E N Q U I RY
