DAYS 1-3 ARRIVE IN DAR ES SALAAM Sleep: Hostel/hotel

Land in Dar es Salaam and step out onto African soil. Known as ‘Dar’ for short, you’ve arrived in Tanzania’s busiest city. A melting pot of East African cultures, Dar is a fantastic place to start your adventure. When you head out to explore, you’ll see Maasai tribesmen and Muslim sheiks walking side by side through the bustling markets and cafes. Contact the ground team and jump into expedition life. Start by changing some money and dividing it between the group. From now on, you’ll need

to manage the team budget in Tanzanian shillings. Plan ahead. Make a list of supplies you need from the market and decide which accommodation you need to book or confirm.

TRAVELLING RESPONSIBLY

RESPECTING THE LOCAL CULTURE IS A CRUCIAL PART OF OVERSEAS TRAVEL. WHAT SHOULD YOU WEAR? HOW SHOULD YOU GREET PEOPLE? WHICH RELIGIOUS CUSTOMS SHOULD YOU BE AWARE OF? REMEMBER TO DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE YOU ARRIVE, ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS AND TAKE YOUR LEAD FROM THE LOCALS.

DAYS 4-6 SOUTHERN PARES TREK Sleep: Camping Travel: Transfer 7-8hrs to Same Trek: 3 days

Take a private transfer to the small town of Same, passing simple villages, forested mountains and African bush on the way. As you travel, you’ll get a real feel for local life as you pass simple villages, forested mountains and wild African bush.

There are lots of great trekking routes here, from one-day trips via caves and lakes to a three-day ascent of Shengena Peak (2,462m). Get together as a team and decide which you’d like to tackle – most groups choose three separate day-treks.

Arrive in the lush Pare Mountains, part of the Eastern Arc Mountains. Tourists rarely visit this remote area, so the traditions and folklore of the Pare people remain largely untouched. Head to the markets in Same and stock up on food supplies before you start trekking. This is your chance to acclimatise and getting to grips with mountain life.

DAYS 7-13 COMMUNITY-LED PROJECT Sleep: Camping Travel: Transfer 3-4hrs to Moshi, transfer 3-4hrs to the community

DAYS 14-16 MAASAI TREK IN MONDULI JUU Sleep: Camping Travel: Transfer 2hrs to start point Trek: 3 days

Time for a completely different challenge. Spend the next few days contributing to a community-led project that supports local needs in rural Tanzania. You’ll find out exactly what your project involves nearer the time, as it will depend on what’s needed most when you visit. This is a side of Tanzania that few tourists see. Rural life can be tough,

Trekking through Tanzania with the legendary Maasai tribe is a oncein-a-lifetime experience that you’ll never forget. You’ll spend the next three days exploring the Monduli district – a cluster of Maasai villages beneath the Monduli Mountains and the mighty volcanic peak of Ol Doinyo Lengai (‘Mountain of God’).

and you’ll have none of the comforts you’re used to back home. You’ll be living and working alongside the community, so grab this opportunity to immerse yourself in their culture. Make new friends, learn a few words in Swahili and try to appreciate the reality of rural life. These are the stories that will stay with you long after you leave.

Along the way, you’ll see rare glimpses of Maasai life. Your guides have grown up in this area, so take this opportunity to ask them all about Maasai life.

Take on the role of team leader and get to know your Maasai guides. Together, you’ll set off from the village of Emairete, which lies in a sacred volcanic crater. Steer your group through Maasai farmland and rainforest to the village of Enguiki.

DAY 17 NGORONGORO CRATER SAFARI Sleep: Camping Travel: Transfer 2-3hrs to the safari camp

Thought this trip couldn’t get any better? It just did. You’re about to experience a day in the Ngorongoro Crater – one of the best safari destinations in the world. A massive volcanic basin, spanning a hundred square miles, the Ngorongoro Crater teems with animals, from zebra and wildebeest to hippos and gazelle. This wildlife mecca is home to the highest density of lions in Africa. In fact, it’s home to all five of the Big Five: lions, leopards, rhino, buffalo and elephants.

The cool early mornings and evenings are the best time to spot wildlife, so bring some binoculars for a closer look. There they are, roaming free on the plains and drinking at the waterhole. Pinch yourself – yes, they really are right in front of you.

The magic happens when you set out on game drives across the savannah.

DAYS 18-21 ZANZIBAR OR SWAHILI COAST Sleep: Camping/other Travel: Transfer 10-12hrs to Dar es Salaam, transport to the coast/Zanzibar varies

Time to hit the beach. Travel back to Dar and plan your own itinerary from here. Zanzibar and the Swahili Coast are perfect places to round-off your expedition, with their white sands and fascinating history. This was a major hub of East African slavery, and you’ll find poignant reminders wherever you go. For the ultimate escape, book a ferry to the spice islands of Zanzibar.

The largest island (Unguja) has a beautiful old town and stunning beaches. Alternatively, the beach town of Bagamoyo is north of Dar. Full of history, everything from ivory to slaves were once shipped from here to Zanzibar. To the south is Kipepeo Beach – an upmarket escape for snorkelling, boat rides and lazy days. You’ll have enough budget left to camp, or you could dip into your own funds for an upgrade. WHEN YOU’RE BUYING SOUVENIRS, TRY HAGGLING IN SWAHILI. ASK ‘BEI GANI?’ FOR THE

HOW TO HAGGLE

PRICE. ‘GHALI SANA’ MEANS ‘VERY EXPENSIVE’ AND ‘PUNGUZA KIDOGO’ ASKS THE SELLER TO LOWER THE PRICE. DON’T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY – THE BEST TACTIC IS TO SMILE AND HAVE FUN.

DAY 22 TRAVEL HOME FROM DAR ES SALAAM Travel: Ferry/transfer 2hrs to Dar (depending on start location)

Time to go. Cram everything into your backpack and set off for the airport. It’s been a life-changing month and you’ve achieved more than you ever imagined. Check-in, sit back and take a moment to reflect on everything you’ve experienced. You’ve led your team across Maasai lands and mountain terrain, immersed yourself in local
