WHAT DOES SUSS DO?

The development of Start Up Street pre-prototype 1 had consisted of conversations between the lead partners and a continuation of the work generated at the Urban Ideas Bakery held in October, 2010. The team had several assumptions on how the concept could work in practice so that an animation and description of Start Up Street could be generated as a starting point for discussion/ development. You can find this animation on the blog: http:// startupstreetstirling.wordpress.com/about/ The following is a list of key learnings we took away from running the first prototype. Start Up Street needs a ground team The success of Start Up Street needs a ground team, at least one person day to day working on the project. As part of the Exciting Idea Generation workshop, discussions had commenced on the role of a City Lab, which would be located inside the

arcade and run by a small team, ideally packaged up as a social enterprise. The role of the city lab was to understand customer needs and translate these into ventures run in shops by the public. To run this the majority agreed that Start Up Street needs an on the ground admin who’s focus is on running this process and maintaining relationships between interested parties, Stirling Council and local business. This role was considered as either an investment from an organisation like Creative Scotland, to pay for a part time admin to work with the development partners until June 2012 and then continue the project on. The second options was to look for people within Stirling Council and develop a new/ additional role for them to run Start Up Street in the city centre. The role of keeping momentum and interest in Start Up Street was discussed as having to be by someone local from Stirling currently, or willing to base themselves in the City.

HOW SUSS COULD WORK

1. AWARE We’ve put together a SUSS Framework that breaks down the process by which a SUSS ground team could develop toward a market (or similar) event. At its most basic, this process should be integral to the services that SUSS provide and offer their customers. By identifying and sticking to this process, we are able to gather data on outcomes, and whether the process needs to be tweaked.

Furthermore it gives us a unique opportunity to fully understand a potential process that can be undertaken to transform a high street. This is not a linear A to B process, however there are key activities that should be maintained. The rest of the process should be interpreted only as a guide. The intended use is to act as a guide for future events, and to be able to convey the success of SUSS to a public audience through a clear, transparent process.

BECOMING AWARE OF SUSS

As highlighted in the blueprint, there are a variety of users that would become aware of the service during the “pre idea” phase. We already have a group of interested parties who signed up to be involved with the future of SUSS. To begin with, we need to reengage this group, motivate and invigorate them to help towards the goal of the market event. Utilising social media channels has proved successful when only a short amount of time is set aside to maintain the blog and twitter account. Going forward, this will be imperative in staying in contact with followers of SUSS. It keeps users updated on project and interests that are being submitted.

Furthermore, this dialogue should be ongoing. Used as a ‘call-out’ at the beginning of any event, and maintained throughout its course, social media marketing should relate to both the general public (not necessarily restricted to Stirling) as well as established organisations and potential funders. Offline, we will utilise posters as per the first prototyping workshop to instil further interest in the project.

keeping people informed on the projected and has provided the most interest & feedback.

Although the blog format has served its purpose well up until now, we feel that a key transition in driving this project further will be the provision of a functioning website which allows users to add some of the features shown over the next few pages.

With additional funding, and through close and careful development with our web designers we believe a website could be achieved that could truly capture the potential of the ideas in Stirling and provide a viable platform to push these forward.

The website will form the key touchpoint throughout Start Up Street Stirling. It has thus far proved to be the most viable option for

We believe this should taken forward as the next step.

THE SUSS CLUB Congratulations! (And Thank You) for joining the Start Up Street Stirling Club. In this pack you will find four items which we hope will come in useful.

JOINING SUSS

1 To join SUSS should be simple, requiring little effort to add, view, rate, comment and engage with ideas. The purpose of joining SUSS is not to sign up and collect details, but rather to gain an understanding of the users needs, expectations, ideas and thoughts about Stirling and SUSS. The service should focus on collaboration, on understanding the assets available to the users when attempting to drive their ideas and ventures forward. By encouraging users to comment, vote and share ideas we envision that some groups will for from shared interest. This puts SUSS in a unique position, as this group interested puts any one concept in a much stronger position of being pushed forward.

At this stage, we have also introduced the volunteers to the ideas. Again, without signing on, these users can explore the concepts within the SUSS website and have the option to then give details to help with ideas. For those who do sign up, and are keen/ committed enough to develop their idea, a series of workshops will support these individuals in their development. The first of which is perhaps the most important. The “Business Model Canvas Workshop will help support the users to begin to understand for themselves how their business might work, including key relationships, resources, revenues streams etc they intend to establish.

A few months ago while we were at the gym, my friends and I decided that we would like to start a smoothie company. We want to get an idea of what kinds of smoothies people like best before we open a shop in Stirling, and thought having a stall at the market would be the best way to do this.

MARKET FIT OUT

Simple, customisable spaces. Karen MacPherson graduated from Duncan and Jordanstone College of Art. Her current exhibition at the Scottish Parliament “Design and Democracy” event highlights the use of standard size flat pack wood such as the type that could be provided by Norbord, and involving someone like Karen in the project will also sit well with the Year of Creative Scotland 2012.

PACK ONE

“We are in a unique and unprecedented position. The proximity, profile, vision and energy of London 2012 and Glasgow 2014, reinforced within a Year of Creative Scotland, enables us to profile and celebrate the key contribution that a strong, vibrant cultural offer brings to our lives and how we are perceived nationally and internationally. We are encouraging the cultural sector to respond with ambition and exploit the opportunities available in the next three years.

PACK TWO

“ Year of Creative Scotland in 2012 will celebrate and promote Scotland’s cultural and creative vibrancy, shine a spotlight on our creative assets, provide a test-bed for new initiatives and a launch platform for activity to support Year of Homecoming in 2014. It will provide a chance to work together to promote Scotland’s festivals, our great cities, to get Scotland dancing and to shine a spotlight on the contribution that people and places play in making us a leading creative nation.”

PACK THREE

Karen could provide initial practical advice on setting up an individual space.
