THAT ALL MAY BE ONE, JOHN 17:21 2023
On February 2, 2023, in the festivities of the presentation of Baby Jesus in the temple, the Eucharist was solemnly celebrated in the Chapel of the Santa Rosa de Lima School, of the Dominican Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. The Apostolic Nuncio, Monsignor Paolo Rocco Gualtieri, invited all consecrated persons to recognize and welcome the Lord throughout their lives. Likewise, he emphasized that we must follow more closely, since Jesus is the light that illuminates everyone, and that same light is what gives meaning to Religious Life.
SHARING
The community of Father Paul Watsson House of Formation participated with great fervor in the Eucharist, as active members of the missionary Church in Peru, aware that we are called to announce the Gospel and console the people of God who suffer
From the mass to the table, once the Eucharist was concluded, the host sisters invited us to go to a community area to celebrate together the joy of congregating as members of one body, the mystical body of Christ, which it serves.
VARIOUS CHARISMS, ONE MISSION
During the sharing, each brother interacted with members of other religious communities, enriching that space that humanizes, harmonizes, and makes us feel that we are in the same boat to sail and go to the depths, rowing together with the people of God.
LIFE
FOLLOWING THE LORD MORE CLOSELY: THE MEANING OF RELIGIOUS
HANDS THAT GIVE ARE NEVER EMPTY
On March 3, the community of Franciscan Friars receives a valuable donation from Cáritas Arquidiocesanas de Lima and Mr. Carlos Adolfo Diaz Reyes, director of the Academia de Futbol Kyros (Kyros Soccer Academy), was immediately contacted. He serves 70 low-income children at the academy.
This donation was equivalent to 7 packages, including cookies, milk, water, juice, chocolate milk, and cereal.
This aid contributed to the strengthening and space for sports; for example, the practice schedules were extended with the water resources, thus increasing the time to keep the children active and keeping them from other activities that could affect their human development, such as falling prey to vices.
The vast majority of the children benefited were from homes living in poverty.
With the purpose of being a bridge between the institutions and the less fortunate, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement chose the academy to be the direct beneficiary of the donation made by Cáritas de Lima.
The children expressed their gratitude to God, Cáritas and the Franciscan Friars for their support
START OF THE ISET 2023 ACADEMIC PERIOD
On March 6, 2023 academic year was inaugurated with the Eucharist at the Instituto Superior de Estudios Teologicos (ISET) (Higher Institute of Theological Studies).
The Eucharist was presided over by Monsignor Juan Jose Salaverry OP, Dean of the Educational Institution.
In the homily, he exhorted the students to always have an open and attentive spirit to the new social changes that are taking place, and along with this, to be able to respond as future pastoral agents.
The community of Franciscan Friars attended with great joy. It was a time for celebration because two brothers began one more facet such as academics, which will be very useful in the formation process and will allow them to expand their knowledge from the world of philosophy, which broadens their thinking.
The brothers who began their first year of philosophy were: Franks Williams Lopez Carlo and Teodoro Jose Zamora.
May God grant them wisdom and perseverance in this transcendental process of their lives, in preparation to serve the people of God, and that together with other brothers from other communities, they can find new knowledge to generate life.
SOCCER WITH FAITH
To help in the training of the children who attend the Kyros Soccer Academy, Mr. Carlos invited Fr. Jose so that together with the brothers they could collaborate on basic topics abouttheChurch.OntheafternoononMarch24,we attended the municipal field grounds where the children met with the instructor to share moments of reflection with them.
Weseized thisopportunity, and togetherwiththechildren, some restless others focused, it was pleasant to listen to them and interact in group dynamics; in their restlessness, some asked, why do you dress like that? referring to the Clergy Robe, and others stated that they would like to be priests when they grow up.
Let the children come to me, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. Sharing with them took place in that harmonious atmosphere. Once the topic was concluded, each of the children went to the field to continue with their training, educating in faith, with values for life.
OPENING TO THE MISSION
In preparation for Holy Week, Br. Alexander Espinosa Guerrero, SA and Br. Teodoro, representing Fr. Paul Watsson fraternity, attended a chat organized by the Brotherhood of Our Lord Crucified of RIMAC. The topic “Commitment and Service” was delivered to the members of the brotherhood. Br. Alexander invited the members to assume their commitment as baptized individuals, not only are they called to serve on the days of festivities of Our Lord of RIMAC, but the service to the Church is continuous, and the participation of the sacraments is essential for their spiritual growth. In this way, the friars fulfill their role of inserting themselves and serving the communities where they are requested as spiritual support, always maintaining harmony with the parish priests. Approximately 200 brothers participated in this instructional event.
INTERCULTURALITY THAT UNITES
On June 16, as it is the day of interculturality, the great Isetian 2023 event began with a welcoming Eucharist, with dances and chants. This event, promoted by the academic institution, was a celebration with dances and songs in order to share and learn about the cultural diversity that converges at ISET, where most of the student community comes from abroad, that is, from 17 countries.

ROSARY WITH NEIGHBORS
The community of Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in Lima, Peru, continues to accompany neighbors who get together every Saturday at 6:00 pm to pray the Holy Rosary in Salta Park of Pueblo Libre.
The Marian fervor is present every Saturday. It is gratifying to meet and pray to the Mother of the Savior, under the patronage of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. It is also worth mentioning that the Augustinian Missionary Sisters are a fundamental pillar in the encouragement of this group that celebrate and live their faith through the Holy Rosary.
IN SERVICE TO OTHERS
With great joy and enthusiasm, Fr. Jose M Delgado, Br. Alexander Espinosa and Br. Yasser Zamora, left on June 16 fortheApostolicVicariateofSanRamón,specificallytoVilla Rica, located in the Jungle, 12 hours by land from Lima.
A mission, a service, to collaborate with the Franciscan Sisters of the Divine Shepherd to train the teaching and administrative staff, and at the same time take advantage of the space to launch networks in the search for young people who have vocational concerns and to be able to accompany them in their discernment.
VIA CRUCIS AT SAN LUCAS PARISH
On March 31, 2023, at the invitation of the Parish Priest, Fr. Carlos Mayorga, an altar was set up to await the passing of the Holy Via Crucis. The participation in the last Via Crucis of the San Lucas parish was touching. It consisted of a broad tour of the main streets of the parish district, in preparation for the Via Crucis on Good Friday. At each station, a reflection was made for on peace, the environment, the conversion of each person, religious and priestly vocations, and the active secular life, for families, the sick and all those who suffer from psychological illnesses and of other kind. As he passed in front of our house, Fr. Carlos asked the Lord for the community of Franciscan Friars so that the Lord would help us to remain faithful in the call and for the increase in vocations.
PALM SUNDAY
Holy Week began in April, and Fr. Jose celebrated the Eucharist in the 2 de Mayo neighborhood near the RIMAC River, a marginal area of the metropolis of Lima.
This day commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. In many places they say chants, such as: “With palms and branches we praise Christ the King”, “Christ yesterday, Christ today and Christ always”, and the Hymn You Will Reign is sung. This is how Holy Week or Great Week is announced.
Fulfilling the mission and echoing the lyrics of the Hymn “Missionary Soul,” being with the people with the smell of sheep to accompany them in their spiritual life. The beginning of Holy Week is the annual Christian commemoration of the Passion of Christ; that is, the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Via Crucis, the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, to celebrate the resurrection, and an invitation to a new and transformed life day by day.
VOCATIONAL FAIR OF DIOCESE OF CALLAO
On Sunday, April 18, 2023, we were invited by the vocational pastoral of the Diocese of Callao, to participate and introduce the community to young people interested in Religious Life.
It began with the Holy Eucharist presided over by Mons. Luis Alberto Barrera Pacheco, who invited young people to look at God, but also exhorted devotees to be merciful to those who seek or knock on doors of formation houses, to welcome them, pray for them, accompany them, guide them, and direct them in their process so that together they can make the path towards holiness, being attentive to the changes that occur. The vocation does not end in the process of “enamoring” the aspirants, but rather it is to provide close, human accompaniment and, above all, under the action of the Holy Spirit, to let oneself be carried away.
The attendance was notable. Approximately 20 religious communities, including Institutes, Societies of Apostolic Life, Religious Orders and Congregations.
For the occasion, the community of Franciscan Friars of the Atonement designed a small three-fold brochure with the motto: “Take a chance:” it is an invitation to young people who sometimes do not find meaning in their lives, but at the same time God invites them not to be afraid.
Among the notable slogans that could be seen there are: “Say yes to Jesus”, “Take an important step in your life”, “He calls you; they need you”, “Looking for something more in your life?” “Are you excited about the mission of Evangelizing?” “Dare,” “Jesus needs you,” “I will die, but my work will not die,” “The time has come to act,” “We are here,” “You can be a Franciscan.”
61ST ANNIVERSARY OF SAN LUCAS PARISH
On the occasion of the 61st Anniversary of the San Lucas Parish, the community of Franciscan Friars of the Atonement collaborated with the parish by providing the field to hold the volleyball tournament where 8 teams participated, 4 teams from the parish, 3 from different parishes and a team organized by the Friars.
First thing in the morning under the gray sky, the Paz y Bien team, organized by the friars, were the first to play against the confirmation youth of the parish, with the Paz y Bien team being the winner. Afterwards, the result of the other teams was awaited, and we got to the semi-finals; however, the trophy was not achieved. For the night, a music concert and bingo were organized in the street by the parish.
CELEBRATING ECUMENICAL LIFE
In tune with our charism, together with the ecumenical community, on June 27, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement participated in the unity breakfast.
With Ecumenical News as the topic, together with these small meetings, this is where true ecumenism is conceived and grows, initiatives of the faithful of different confessions who long to know and recognize each other more and more as brothers of Christ, the path of unity is the way and is driven by the action and strength of the Holy Spirit.
This important opportunity for reflection is held at the YMCA headquarters, and the participation of members of the Anglican Church, Methodists, Presbyterians, Adventists, and other ecclesial groups also stands out.

ECUMENICAL MEETING
Br. Alex and Br. Yasser represented the fraternity by participating in an ecumenical meeting.
APOSTOLIC VICARIATE MISSION OF SAN RAMON
Once the first semester of ISET was concluded, Fr. Jose, together with Monsignor Gerardo, organized the missionary tour to a few communities of the vicariate. On July 26, we left by land and surely echoing in each other, the song that says, “Lord, I have missionary soul,” began the divine adventure. La Merced, Yurinaky, Perene, Florida, Pichanaky, Mazamary, Puerto Ocopa, Satipo, Oventeni and Atalaya were visited.
It is worth mentioning that these were moments to rekindle the missionary spirit. Navigating for 8 hours reminded of Peter when he said: “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water,” and Jesus said to him: “Come.”
“Whoever leaves their home for me will find me.” With that missionary spirit, our Franciscan sisters gave us a warm welcome in Perene.
“Whoever leaves their home for me will have eternal life.” With that missionary spirit, our Franciscan sisters gave us a warm welcome in Perene.
THE LORD GAVE ME BROTHERS
In a festive, fraternal and very Franciscan atmosphere, the regional meeting of the SFO was held in the house of the Friars, on Sunday, September 3, 2023.
The brothers of the SFO carried out activities to spend time in fraternity, as well as to raise funds for the projects they carry out.
It was full of surprises, gymkhana games, raffles, drawings, and dances.
The friars shared a moment of peace and goodwill with the members of the different fraternities who were present. Approximately 110 brothers were present.
Brothers of the Secular Franciscan Order spending a pleasant day as a family in a fraternal spirit, also tasting Peruvian food, which they prepared with great care for the occasion.
AFFECTIVITY
AND CONSECRATED LIFE
In order to form balanced leaders and pastoral agents, the Office of the Rector of the Higher Institute of Theological Studies, in its continuous education program offered on September 15 a talk on affectivity and consecrated life, given by the priest of North American origin, Fr. Kevin Flaherty, SJ.
Father Flaherty made a deep reflection about the management of affectivity and how to manage it, not as a way to escape from our affectivity, but rather channeling it and transforming it to put it to work on our consecrated life, and for the benefit of the people of God who are served.
Affectivity must be integrated and seen as a gift from God, which invites us to donate to others, without malice and prejudice. The brothers Franks and Teo, who are active members of the alma mater, participated in this very important talk.
The final invitation was not to be afraid, and above all, not to get attached to others, because it ultimately affects others, but to know that in the religious life, we will change constantly due to the lifestyle. We are itinerant. We shall not put our eyes and affections on anything or anyone, but channel them towards holiness. Assume and take care of emotional life like the treatment given to flowers, which wither, leaving their beauty impregnated within us. In this way, affectivity drives us to live with joy and detachment, being, as Saint Francis of Assisi said, a living Gospel.
On September 15, Brothers Alex, Yasser, Frank and Indilicio, collaborated with topics for the preparation of the youngsters who are going to receive the sacrament of confirmation at the School of the Franciscan Sisters of Copacabana.
To do this, they traveled to the Diocese of Lurín, which is located two hours from the P. Paul Watson formation house.
TALK TO CONFIRMATION YOUTH GROUP FROM THE SCHOOL OF THE FRANCISCAN SISTERS OF COPACABANA
ON THE PATH TO HOLINESS
Upon the pleasant visit of the Minister General Fr. Brian Terry S.A. and Fr. Daniel Callahan, S.A. to the community on September 16, 2023, the guardian of the house, Fr. Jose M Delgado, S.A. took the opportunity to present brothers Indilicio de la Trinidad and Frank López to be admitted to the Novitiate, in a solemn ceremony with much simplicity and with the presence of the Crucified Sisters Adorers of the Eucharist. The aforementioned brothers took another step in their process of following Jesus and continual conversion.
The community of Friars welcomed the brothers who began the process, asking God to guide, lead and inspire them to follow Him faithfully and in coherence with His lifestyle.
Fr. his reflection, Fr. Daniel invited them to persevere, pray abundantly and see Jesus as their teacher and model of formation.
RECOGNITION OF PASTORAL WORK
On the celebration of the Centennial in honor of Our Crucified Lord of RIMAC in Alameda de los Descalzos, the Board of Directors unanimously selected, as every year, outstandingindividualswhoservedtheentrusted congregation with great commitment. Fr. Jose M Delgado S.A., guardian of the Father Paul Wattson formation house in Lima, Peru was elected to receive the medal of distinction.
On September 27, 2023, the group of individuals selected to be worthy of the medal of distinction of merit were awarded in the Santa Liberata Parish for their contribution to the Brotherhood of the Crucified Lord of RIMAC. In their words of gratitude, Fr. Jose dedicated this recognition to the work of the fraternity in Peru. In the image, Father Francisco Arias Magallanes, Spiritual Director of the Brotherhood, and Diego Alonso Urrutia, religious administrator. The religious administrator thanked Fr. Jose for his contribution and pastoral assistance, and to the other members for being the hope for the future of the Church.
ISET OLYMPICS 2023
In order to promote fraternization, the COES [Comité de Operación Económica del Sistema Interconectado Nacional (Nacional National Interconnected System Financial Operation Committee)], ISET 2023 together with the presidents of the sports, culture, liturgy and other commissions, organized the Olympic week from September 22 to October 6, 2023, which hosted sports disciplines such as: Volleyball, soccer, basketball and ping pong. On this occasion, Brothers Frank and Teodoro participated along with their first-year philosophy classmates, some of whom participated in the various disciplines. For the semifinal and final, the other brothers of the fraternity came to encourage the brothers who participated in this great event.
It was not possible to reach the finals; however, the goal of being able to interact more closely with members of other religious communities was achieved.
MUJERES DEL ALBA (WOMEN OF THE DAWN)
As part of the formation process promoted by the guardian and formation companion, Fr. Jose M Delgado, from September 20 to 22, the brothers in formation participated in the workshop, facilitated by the Conference of Religious People of Peru, of which we are active members of this teaching center, where the human, academic, spiritual, fraternal facets, and the following of Jesus are delved into. The workshop was taught by a Jesuit priest from Mexico and a group of Theologists experts from the Pontifical Catholic University [Universidad Pontificia Católica (PUC)].
The topic had as motto: “Women of the Dawn;” that is, for the Institution Conference of Religious People of Peru, women of the dawn are the inspiration for following Jesus, because they were the first to announce the Resurrection. In that sense, a reflection is made about the fundamental role of women who are protagonists in the history of the Church and with emphasis on their role as missionaries in Latin America.
Today, the cry of women in Latin America resonates loudly. The dawn emerges with the voices of women. Some women like Magdalene, Mary, and Salome, very early on the first day of the week, arrived at the tomb at sunrise (Mark. 16: 1 - 2).
In the midst of darkness, they set out to wake up the world and announce the encounter with Jesus.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL CALLED TO DO?
With the topic “What Do you Feel Called to Do?” there was a vocational gathering convened by the vocational commission of the diocese of Carabayllo, on October 1, 2023, where approximately 50 young people from the diocese participated.
Several religious communities participated, which spoke from their experience, as well as couples who spoke about the importance of marriage today, and trials and challenges for families.
All the speakers agreed that the risk must be taken in the vocation to respond generously to the call that God makes from the various charisms, and especially as baptized people. On this occasion, Brother Teodoro had the opportunity to attend this moment of vocational discernment.
KNOWING FRANCIS OF ASSISI
On October 3, 2023, prior to the solemnity of Saint Francis of Assisi, the friars participated in a pleasant and fraternal moment with members of the ecumenical group that meet at the YMCA. It was a very pleasant event because, in this meeting, the main figure was Saint Francis as a model of an ecumenical, ecological, and very integral Christian, brother of everything and everyone. He followed Jesus, leaving everything behind, and thus invites all Christians to empty themselves to be light amid darkness.
The image shows moments of deep prayer with the brothers, where they asked for the unity of all Christians and for peace in the world.
SOLEMNITY IN HONOR OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI
As members of the same Franciscan family, the Franciscan friars of the Atonement were invited by their Franciscan sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Mary to celebrate with them on October 4 the gift of fraternity and Franciscan spirituality on the occasion of the solemnity in honor of the seraphic Father of Assisi.
After the Eucharistic celebration, the sisters invited everyone to go to the dining room to enjoy an exquisite lunch, with Peruvian flavor and Salvadoran aroma. It is worth mentioning that the community of the Franciscan sisters of the Immaculate Conception is made up of 2 Peruvian sisters and 3 Central American sisters of Salvadoran origin.
In order to continue spending time after the appetizing lunch, we shared a moment of fraternal dance.
In the image we see the fruits produced in their garden from which we enjoyed a delicious salad.
ECUMENICAL PRAYER FOR PEACE
Last October 21, at the headquarters of the YMCA Organization, there was a peak moment of prayer to ask for peace in the countries of Ukraine and Russia and worldwide where there are conflicts that destabilize the peace of families.
Likewise, there was time for reflection and spending time with the young people from different religious denominations and parishes, about community life, dialogue, charisma, and ecumenism.
After this, there were moments of deep prayer to ask for God’s intervention in countries that suffer the consequences of the selfishness of those in power.
A light for God to illuminate the lives of those who have power, may the light reach them and illuminate them with wisdom on how to exercise their power with justice and righteousness.
RETREAT FOR CONFIRMATION YOUNG GROUP
On November 11, 2023, the friars collaborated with a retreat for the youngsters who are preparing to receive the sacrament of confirmation in the “El Sagrario” chapel of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Lima. Br. Alex and Luiggi Guaman Cordova participated as base members, and Br. Yasser Zamora and Br. Teodoro Zamora as support members.
Brother Teodoro taught the topic, Why am I afraid?
An interesting topic in the sense that young people today live in a disposable culture. “I came so that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10: 10).
When we are alive, spontaneity is born within us to: Respond to life’s setbacks, and say I can be better, nothing can paralyze me, fear often helps us move forward. Fr. Jose M Delgado officiated the Eucharist and collaborated in the confession of the youngsters.
The youngsters were very happy upon listening to each of the topics offered by the team of friars, in which they were shown the realities of life, and how to respond from the world where each of them as young individuals move.
ISET 2023 THEOLOGICAL REFLECTION
From November 13 to 16, the week of theological reflection was held at the Higher Institute of Theological Studies ISET Juan XXIII. The topic of reflection focused on the 10 years of Pope Francis’ Pontificate, challenges and opportunities for the hierarchical Church and the parishioners or laypersons.
Renowned theologians and academics from other higher education institutions such as the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru PUC, the Apostolic Nuncio represented by his secretary, and teachers from the Higher Institute of Theological Studies among others, participated in the group of speakers. Different topics regarding the ten years of Pope Francis’ pontificate were addressed during the four-day duration of the theological reflection. The analysis or reflection was issued from a constructive critical perspective.
It was an opportunity to recognize and value the contribution of Pope Francis in the renewal of the Church, a Church that is still in force and making it possible to keep alive the hopes that the Second Vatican Council brought with it. One of the very remarkable topics shared by the former professor at the Pontifical University, Mr. Rolando Annes Cobian, was titled the shadows of a closed world.
In this topic, he mentioned that we live in a world of inequalities from the economic, social and political fields, a liquid culture of consumerism and disposal, insecurity and mistrust, and interest in collective society has been lost, that is, each person has entrenched themselves in their own battle spaces, sometimes from a computer, because technologies have come to cool down face-to-face communication, bringing us closer to those far away and distancing us from those around us.
Another relevant aspect was seeing how the economy encapsulates the poor, the elderly, the youth, and children who are not profitable, that is, here the throwaway culture is fulfilled. You are great while you are useful to me, after that, I immediately put distance between us and marginalize you. In that sense, Pope Francis exhorts us to let ourselves go out of ourselves to live a reality of one-on-one, the encounter, the reality, to stop living in isolation and aspire to live a true universal brotherhood.
An invitation was also extended to live in a culture of hope, to listen to the call to conversion, to get closer to others, to know how to say no to indifference, hatred, and racism, since we are one human family.
For the self-formation of the brothers, participating in these opportunities for reflection is of vital importance because it helps them create awareness and live in the present with their feet on the ground.
CELEBRATING THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF MARY
To celebrate the festivity in honor of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Sisters Servant of Jesus Christ extended an invitation to the community to share a fraternal time with them, and Fr. Jose officiated the Holy Eucharist on the eve of the Solemnity of the ever Immaculate Virgin Mary.
At the end of the Eucharist, the sisters gave their welcome speech and then proceeded to pray the Holy Rosary where they asked for peace, the health of the sick, the migrants, the unity of families and the increase in vocations.
AUGUSTINIAN SISTERS RELIGIOUS PROFESSION
With a solemn Eucharist of thanksgiving, sisters Carolina from Argentina and Carmen from Peru, gave their generous Yes to the call of God on Our Lady of Guadalupe’s festivities on December 12, at the San Lucas Parish of Pueblo Libre in Lima Peru.
Why was that date chosen? surely because the words of the Virgin: “Am I not here, I, who am your Mother?” take on a new meaning in the response of consecration to God in their lives and in that of the Augustinian Missionary sisters. That “I am” of the Virgin, that “I am” is to remain permanently imprinted in their hearts, to share with others the learning that they experienced during their stages of vocational discernment, thus being a light for the world in the midst of so many adversities. They chose that date to project the image of a Church that carries Christ in its bosom, and that they will bear fruit wherever the Lord sends them.
As a sign that we are called to live a great universal fraternity, the festivities after the Eucharist were held in the house of the friars, who welcomed the sisters and all their guests for such an occasion, and moments of fraternization were experienced with all the communities that accompanied the sisters to share this transcendental moment in their lives.
IN HISTORY
December 15 was a memorable and solemn date for the friars present in Lima, Peru, during the celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the founding of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement.
The admonition for the occasion invited us to build a reign based on dialogue, unity, healing, harmony, compassion, solidarity, mercy, love and goodwill. Values that were the dream of the founders, Father Paul Wattson and Mother Lurana White, who had that immense desire to put their strength into the unity of the Church of Christ.
Likewise, in this solemn and transcendental celebration for the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, brothers Alexander, Yasser and Teodoro renewed their vows for one more year. In the homily offered by Fr. Nelson, a Combonian Missionary, invited the brothers to live their consecrated life as a free gift offered to God in order to always be attentive and vigilant to hear the voice of God in the midst of so many noises that can distract us and make us lose sight of the horizon.
The guardian of the house, Fr. Jose Delgado delegated by the Minister General, received the renewal of vows of the brothers. At the end, Br. Alexander thanked God and all the people who accompanied the friars in this important time, with the attendance of approximately 15 religious communities and members of ecumenical groups.
THE PERFECT GIFT IS JESUS CHRIST
On Sunday, December 17, at the request of the Crucified Sisters Adorers of the Eucharist, first communion catechists of the San Lucas Parish, Br. Teodoro was invited to teach a topic at the retreat for the children in preparation for Christmas.
The topic chosen by the brother was “Jesus Christ the perfect gift.” He delved into how to prepare to receive Jesus Christ in a consumerist and insensitive world. During the presentation, the children actively participated in response to the questions asked by the brother.
Likewise, he made an acrostic with the letters of “NAVIDAD” (CHRISTMAS) so that the children could understand the meaning of Christmas. “N” nacimiento (birth), “A” adoración (worship) was the response when Jesus came to this earth, Cfr. Lucas 2:1314. “V”, vida (life) John. 14:6, “I” imagen (image) of the invisible God Col, 1:15, “D”, dar (give) reminds us of one of the characteristics of God, of giving, 1 John. 4:8, the letter “A” amor (love) refers to The true love: Act, work, take steps, generate life, be a bridge, communicate, make an effort, do what is necessary to serve. It is like the love of our parents for each of us, a love willing to do anything, to give their lives if possible. And finally, the letter “D” evokes the divinity of Jesus, “He did not consider equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” Philippians 2:6-7.
The day ended with a hot cocoa party in Salta Park, as a Christmas celebration with other children from the parish.
At the end, the brother emphasized remembering that Jesus is our model. You and I can live and walk in this world as He did. Do not worry about gifts but think on the fact that there are greater needs that deserve attention, for example, helping people who need human and spiritual assistance and care.
CELEBRATING IN FRANCISCAN FRATERNITY
With great religious fervor, on December 21, the friarsparticipated in the Eucharistic celebration at the home of the Franciscan sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, in memory of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the temple of Jerusalem.
It was a very special moment for all those present because three branches of the Franciscan family were gathered, including the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception.
Fr. Jose in his homily invited the sisters and brothers to live this time of Advent as an opportunity for conversion, as a fragment of the Gospel said, «Today salvation has come to this house; because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost».
After the Eucharistic celebration, there was a feast for everyone with hot cocoa, refreshments, sodas, popcorn, and the inevitable panettones, which are a part of Peruvian culture during Christmas time.
Like every good Franciscan, we could not miss this opportunity to play some Chinese checkers and UNO, and also our bodies needed to burn a little bit of fat after the snacks provided by the sisters, so, a few dances took place at the rhythm of Peruvian, Salvadoran, Colombian and Nicaraguan songs, and this is how we had a pleasant time in brotherhood.
GIVE BREAD TO YOUR BROTHER
At the request of Father Carlos Mayorga Rodriguez, parish priest of the San Lucas Parish, a cordial invitation was extended for two brothers to accompany him and the social action group of the parish to go and spend some time with our less fortunate siblings from the diocese of Lurín, 2 hours away from where the formation house of the Friars is located.
Due to an excellent coordination with leaders of the Pachacámac community, from the early hours of December 23, a truck and 3 vans containing food, clothing and toys were loaded for the children of the area. 60 families benefited.
In his speech, Father Carlos thanked the friars for their presence and invited them to encourage the children with songs and group dynamics to transmit a little joy to them.
The beneficiary families were grateful for the gesture of sharing with them, because many of them would not have enough to eat on December 24. Father Carlos told them that all this help came thanks to the generosity of all the good-hearted people who made it possible with their contribution to collect everything shared with them.
NATIVITY MASS
With a solemn Welcome and procession, the Eucharist began in commemoration of the birth of Emmanuel, in the San Lucas parish in Pueblo Libre.
At the entrance admonition, the monitor welcomed and referred to the time of Advent that the readings led us to be vigilant. He is already among us; God has come to the world to save all creation.
The celebrating priest blessed the Nativity Scene and the Christmas tree as a sign that the great night of the birth of God with us has started.
In the homily, Father Carlos urged the parishioners to open their hearts to change, to the renewal of the spirit, to allow themselves to be transformed by God, to give space to God, to be generous with people who suffer. The invitation is to be like the shepherds and the angels who sang, to ask for the peace to the world, that peace the Child (referring to baby Jesus) brought, today that is so needed in an increasingly self-centered world. At the end of the Eucharist due to the large crowd of the faithful, Father Carlos passed by with the image of the Child so that each faithful could venerate Him.
With the solemn blessing, he invited each one of them to go with joy to announce the longawaited of the people, to make his light shine, especially to make it present to those brothers who suffer.
CELEBRATING THE NATIVITY
On December 25, the Eucharist of the Nativity of the Lord was shared at home with the Sisters Servants of Jesus Christ.
With great fervor and religious joy, that moment of the celebration of the manifestation of the Word to men was lived and remembered.
In his homily, Fr. Jose highlighted that the Nativity is also the consecration of the Body of Christ, luminous temples of the divinity that has remained forever in the Sanctuary.
The image shows the art and skills of the brothers in the elaboration the Nativity Scene, which above all reminds us that it is in the heart of each one of us that space must be given so that it is He who transforms life and invites to conversion every day.
After the Eucharistic celebration, the friars invited the sisters to share a simple breakfast, prepared with much love to seal the moment of the Birth of God with us.
At sea, life is more delightful. After breakfast, preparations began to start the trip to the beach to continue the recreative activities with sister water.
CELEBRATING DAY OF THE INNOCENTS
«Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt » (Matthew 2:13).
We have been read, dear brothers, the holy gospel of Saint Luke, it speaks of the precious death of the Innocent martyrs of Christ. The fact that they were beheaded as children means that the glory of martyrdom must be accessed through the path of humility and that if one does not convert and become like a child again, one cannot give one’s life for Christ.
Fr. Jose invited us to reflect carefully about the martyrs and to try to follow their footsteps as much as possible to participate in this heavenly festivity. Likewise in community life, we must be brothers in suffering, we will also be brothers in enjoying consolation.
After the Eucharist, the Sisters Servants of Jesus invited the friars to prepare lunch with them. It was a fraternal get-together from a service and Franciscan spirit. Some brothers prepared a delicious puree of bituca (tuber from the jungle), the sisters prepared an exquisite sweet and sour pork chop, others dedicated themselves to cooking a delicious soup to surprise the sisters who had not had that type of soup, while other brothers dedicated themselves to helping clean the house among other activities.
After lunch, board games such as UNO, Chinese Checkers, among others, could not be absent. These moments help to fraternize. And to finish the Innocents Day, the sisters invited the brothers to enjoy delicious vanilla and turmeric ice creams
LAST ROSARY OF 2023
With a moving message of welcome and offering, Augustine Missionary Sister Deniss opened the last rosary of the year that was shared with the residents of Salta Park as every Saturday of the year. Each of those who recited the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary prayed for different causes.
After the Holy Rosary concluded, the Augustinian Missionary Sisters invited everyone present to spend a moment in their home to share a snack. In that spirit of celebration and joy, some praises were sung to thank God for each one of those present and those absent, and to ask Mother Mary to continue motivating them to pray the Holy Rosary in 2024. This is how fraternal sharing ended on December 30.
EUCHARIST OF THE END OF THE YEAR 2023
On December 31, the last mass of the year was celebrated in the friars’ house. For the occasion, the Crucified Sisters Adorers of the Eucharist, the Servants of Jesus, Augustinian Missionaries and some families close to the friars and the parish priest of San Lucas parish were invited. Vespers were prayed together with the guests, then the Eucharist began with a welcome message, which invited to reflection about the special celebration of the Holy Family of Nazareth, a model for every family. In the homily, Fr. Jose, reflected about the importance of an education based on the values learned at home, from the family as the first school of domestic formation.
Once the Eucharist was over, those present were invited to share a fraternal time with the friars. A simple dinner was prepared, but with a lot of love to end the year by thanking God for the vocation to which each one has been called to, and for so many good things that happened in 2023.
Another way to show what we do
THAT ALL MAY BE ONE.
