Tablet Basics Your Tablet's Layout

Turning the Tablet On/Off Turn Your Tablet On 1. Press and hold the Power/Lock Key Turn Your Tablet Off 1. Press and hold the Power/Lock Key to open the Device options menu 2. Touch Power Off to turn the Tablet off. Your screen remains blank while your Tablet is off (unless the battery is charging)

Note: To save battery power, the Tablet automatically turns off when the screen is left idle. You will still be able to receive messages while the Tablet screen is off. To switch it back on, press the Home Key.

Touchscreen Navigation Your Tablet's touchscreen lets you control actions through a variety of touch gestures. Touch To select icons or apps, simply touch with your finger. This touch gesture is used when typing with the on-screen keyboard and any on-screen buttons.

Touch and Hold Opens the available icon or application Rotate the device This changes the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the Tablet sideways. Pinch to Zoom Using your thumb and forefinger pinch the screen to zoom in or out when viewing a page. Swiping Place your finger on the screen and without lifting it, move it from left to right to swipe. This moves between one screen and another.

Power Saving To extend your Tablet’s battery life, click on Power Saving from the device Settings menu. You can also toggle these settings on or off at the top of the screen in the status bar. Show remaining Battery The battery indicator in the top right of the Home screen will show you roughly how much life is left but if you want to see a more accurate indication: 1. Select to Settings Menu and select Display 2. Tick the box next to Display battery percentage 3. This will show how much power is left

Increase Battery Life There are many ways to preserve battery life. From the Settings option, tap Battery

1. Battery Settings This screen will show the current charge status of the battery; a rough estimate of how long it will last based on what the Galaxy is currently up to.

2. Screen Settings Tapping on the screen will show the current power requirements of the screen and it’s brightness

3. Location Settings Untick the box Use GPS Satellites from this screen as this option can drain the battery. You can re-enable this option when you need it.

4. Wi-Fi Sleep To turn off the power when the Tablet is in Sleep Mode will preserve your battery life. To do this select WiFi from the Settings menu, then select the Advanced Option, touch Keep Wi-Fi on During Sleep

Your Home Screen You can customise your Home Screen by adding application icons, shortcuts, folders and widgets. When you swipe the Home Screen left or right it will display additional screens.

Creating Shortcuts Adding Items and Apps 1. Press the Home key and then touch Apps icon 2. Touch and hold the App icon and then drag it to a Home Screen 3. Release the screen to lock the new shortcut into its new position on the Home Screen Adding Items from the Home Screen 1. Press the Home Key to display the Home screen. 2. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen, and then choose Apps and widgets. 3. Touch and hold the app icon you wish to add, drag it to the Home screen. Release the icon to lock it onto the screen.

Adding and Removing Primary Shortcuts Primary shortcuts are shown on the bottom row of the screen and remain static on all Home screens eg Contacts, Internet and Apps. You can add up to 5 Primary shortcuts in addition to the default shortcuts. To change any other primary shortcuts 1. From the Home Key 2. Touch and hold the primary shortcut you would like to replace and drag it onto an empty space on the Tablet 3. Touch and hold a new shortcut on the Home screen, then drag it to the empty space in the row of Primary shortcuts. 4. Touch and hold a new shortcut on the Home screen, and then drag it to the empty s pace in the row of primary shortcuts.

Navigation Bar Status Bar The Status Bar at the top of the Home screen provides device and service information on the right side and notification alerts on the left.

Notifications The Notification area indicates new message, events(data sync status, new messages, calendar events, call status etc). You can expand this area to display the Notification screen that provides more detailed information about the current on-screen notification icons. To view notification alerts, touch and hold the Status Bar and drag it down.

If you want to add further notification icons, select Settings, Display option. Press and hold the notification to add and drag the button to the Status Bar.

Setting Up Your Galaxy Tablet The first time you turn on your Galaxy Tablet you’ll have to run through a quick setup process to get everything connected and working.

Wi-Fi From the list of available Wi-Fi networks that the Tablet has been able to detect, touch the name of the one that you want to use. If it is locked you’ll need to type in the password then hit Connect. Bluetooth Switch Bluetooth On from Settings menu. The Tablet will search for devices to connect to. Tap the device name to connect.

Personalisation Personalise your Home screen and sound by selecting the following options from the Device option of Settings. Sound – change the sound when you receive text messages etc Wallpaper – change the background screen on your Home screen Display – change font size, time outs settings.

How to create and remove a Widget Widgets are interactive tools that you can place on your Tablet’s Home Screen Widgets provide quick access to information without requiring you to open the application that manages this information. An example is the Calendar widget, which provides a quick view of your upcoming calendar events without opening the Calendar application.

Adding and Removing Widgets 1. Touch Apps from the Home Screen, then Touch the Widgets tab at the top of the screen. 2. Touch and hold an available widget icon. 3. Position the widget on the screen, and release it to add it to the Home screen. 4. If the widget is too large, you will receive the following message: "No more room on this page." 5. The device will then attempt to place the widget on a Home screen with the necessary space. If there is no room on any existing Home screen, and there are additional Home screens available, a new Home screen will be added. The widget will be placed on the new Home screen.

Delete a Widget 1. Touch and hold the widget. Drag the widget to the Remove bar at the top of your screen, and release it. 2. The widget is removed from the Home screen but is still available in the Widgets tab.

Resize a Widget 1. Some widgets can be resized. To resize a widget, touch and hold the widget, then release it. If the widget can be resized, you will see a frame around the widget. 2. Touch and drag to adjust the size of the widget. When you are satisfied with the new size, release the widget, and touch anywhere outside the widget to exit the edit mode.

Task Manager All Apps continue to run in the background even when you can’t see them, unless you shut them down manually. Close them with the Task Manager. Active applications lets you quickly return to recently used apps. When you exit an app by pressing Home, the application is saved in its current state and will remain active in the background. When you touch Back button, the application will close in its current state. Pressing either key will add the application to the list. Access the Task Manager Active Applications The Active applications tab displays all of the applications running on your phone. Touch End to end an application, or touch End all to end all running applications. You should save any information you might need in each application before ending the application.

Downloaded Applications The Downloaded tab displays all of the applications downloaded and installed on your device. Information such as the amount of space the application takes up is also displayed. This tab is where you Uninstall an application from your device.

RAM Manager The RAM tab displays the memory location your device temporarily loads information into when executing an application or using other device functions. If the RAM status indicator is full and device response has slowed, clearing the RAM on your device will improve its performance. Touching Clear memory will not uninstall applications from the phone, but it will end certain open applications. Before touching Clear memory, make sure you save any wanted information in open applications. After you clear the RAM, some applications may take longer to open the first time you use them.

Clear Defaults The Clear defaults tab displays all the applications you have assigned to open a file. If more than one application that can open a file resides on the device, you will be prompted to select which application to use. If you choose Always in the Complete action using prompt, you can reset the selection by touching Clear next to the application name.

Storage The Storage tab displays a summary of your device's system storage, used and available, and the amount of information stored on an installed microSD™ card.

Help The Help tab displays helpful information on how to extend the battery life of your device.

Returning to the Task Manager Holding the Home Key will take you back to the Task Manager screen.

Multi Window By using Multi window you can view two Apps on the screen at the same time Enable Multi Window in the Display settings 1. Press the Home Key and then touch the Menu Key 2. Select Display 3. Touch the Multi Window to activate the feature Using Multi Window Any of the apps found in the Multi window panel can run at the same time as another Multi window app. Run Multi Apps Together 1. Activate the Multi Window 2. Touch the Tab to display the Apps tray 3. Touch and hold an app icon until it detaches from the panel, then drag it off the Apps tray. Release it over the top area of the screen 4. Touch and hold a second app icon until it detaches from the panel, then drag it off the Apps tray. Release it over the bottom area of the screen Switch the placement of the Two Apps Touch the Split bar to display the Switch, Maximize and Close icons

Screen Capture Capture the image of the current screen anytime 1. Touch and hold the Power/Lock Key and the Home Key at the same time to create an image of the current screen. A white border flashes around the edge of the screen indicating a screen capture. 2. The screen capture is automatically saved to the Gallery in an Album labelled the Screenshots.

Smart Screen This feature allows your Tablet to detect when you are looking at the screen and not to time out.

1. Press the Home Key and Tap the Menu Key 2. Select Settings, then Display and Smart screen 3. Touch Smart Stay to set the screen to stay on as long as you are looking at it.

Contact Add a Contact You can add contacts directly into the Contacts application. 1. Press Home Key and touch Contacts icon from your Screen 2. Touch Contact fields to enter information 3. If you need more fields, tap the plus symbol next to the relevant field 4. A new box will appear See and Use Contact Info 1. Tap the contact’s name and their information will appear on the screen 2. Tap their email address to compose an email or phone number to call the person

Edit a Contact 1. Press the Contact icon and touch Contacts 2. Touch a Contact to display it and then touch Edit 3. Touch any field you want to change, edit the information 4. Touch Save Assign a Photo to a Contact 1. Press the Contact and touch Contacts 2. Touch a Contact to display it and then touch the picture icon 3. Choose an image 4. Resize the photo by dragging the sides of the blue border and then touch Done Delete a Contact 1. Press the Contact icon and touch Contacts 2. Touch a Contact to display it and then touch Delete icon 3. Touch OK Share a Contact 1. Press the Contact icon and touch Contacts 2. Touch a Contact to display it and then touch the Menu key and select Share Namecard via 3. Touch Selected contact to send the currently displayed contact 4. Touch to select method of sharing 12


Camera App The Galaxy Tablet comes equipped with a high quality digital camera. Open the Camera App 1. From the Home Screen, tap the Camera icon 2. Tap any part of the screen to make this the main focal point of the image. A green square will then appear to confirm your selection and the auto focus will focus on it Shooting Modes 1. Tap on the Mode button to the lower right of the screen, you will see a series of options eg Night, Sports etc 2. Choose the Mode that suits the type of shot you are taking Camera Settings 1. On the main viewfinder, tap on the Cog icon . 2. This opens the settings and enables you to change various options eg turning on/off flash, setting the timer etc

Edit and Share Photos Your photos are automatically stored in the Gallery app. 1. Tap the photo you wish to select 2. You will see options to rotate or crop your photo. Tap the Edit button and choose Effects. This will allow you to add a frame, filters, colour etc 3. When you’ve applied your changes, press the Save button in the top right corner of the screen. Save it with a name Send Photo 1. Open the photo and press Share 2. A list of apps you can share your photo will appear, Tap on your selection 3. A new email will appear with your photo attached 4. Add a recipient and the message and Send 13


Video Camera Galaxy Tablets are equipped with powerful video camera that is simple to use. Shoot a Video 1. Tap on the Camera app 2. Tap on the icon showing a camera with two arrows pointing left and right to switch between front and rear camera. 3. Tap on the video camera to start shooting 4. A counter in the top right corner tells you how long you’ve been shooting 5. The stop and pause buttons appear at the bottom of the screen Reviewing the footage 1. When you have stopped recording, a thumbnail will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen 2. Tap on this to review your video 3. Select Trim option which looks like the pair of scissors icon at the top of the screen. 4. A frame by frame timeline of the video appears. 5. Drag the start and end markers to trim your video 6. Tap the Done button when finished.

DropBox Dropbox is a Cloud storage service and lets you drag and drop files where they can be securely stored. DropBox is an easy way to store, share and access all your files, photos and documents from multiple devices. This is a free app to download.

Upload and Share a file in Dropbox 1. Tap the Menu button 2. Choose Upload and browse for the file (any file from your Galaxy’s internal storage can be chosen)

Open Dropbox files 1. Open the Dropbox app 2. Browse from the list of files stored in the menu 3. Tap the file to download and open it on your device Manage Dropbox Files 1. Tap the icon to the right of a file in the Dropbox list (this brings up an Options menu) 2. You can now delete, rename and moves files within Dropbox 3. Tapping the Favourite button will download a local copy of the file so you can open it without an online connection. 4. Tap the Favourites icon at the top to see all files stored in this folder

Adobe Reader Open Pdf documents from your email or from the web with this app from Adobe. It has various features designed to make reading documents easier and you can add notes and comments or highlight sections of the text for future reference. This is a free app to download.

How to use the Memo App To Write a Memo 1. From the Home screen, tap on the Memo app 2. Once you tap on the memo a keyboard will appear. You can either key in your memo or by tapping the pencil icon next to the Spacebar you can write with your finger. If using a pen, the app will recognise the letters. 3. Touching the memo icon on the top left of the screen, returns to the main memo page 4. Your screen will now look like a pinboard with all your existing memos pinned to it Delete a Memo 1. Touch the bin icon at the top right of the screen 2. Select the memo or memos you want to remove 3. Select Delete

S Planner App Open the Calendar 1. Tap on the S Planner App. The default view will be the current month with today’s date highlighted. 2. Moving forwards or backwards thought the months, you can swipe up, down, left or right Or Tap the month buttons at the bottom of the screen 3. Tap the white button at the top of the screen to pull down the menu. This enables you to switch between daily, weekly, monthly or annual views. 4. Tapping on the today button brings you back to today’s date.

Events and Tasks The List and Task options at the bottom of the list enables you to see all events and tasks that you have created in the list form. To create a new event 1. Tap twice on the date and then tap Edit Event Details 2. Fill in all the necessary information in the window. Press Save
