Autumn/Winter 2010

will continue to be the natural home to the more established comedians, musicians and tribute acts that have been a staple at the venue, along with the new addition of a number of larger scale dramas, some West End productions and our new style pantomime, Mother Goose, this Christmas.

Welcome... There were two things that really excited me when I arrived here. Firstly, being given the chance to revive the venue in terms of how it looks and the shows it presents, and secondly creating a business which had a future. These first six months have been firmly focused on the former as it is only by appealing to a wider audience that the latter has any chance of succeeding. I hope that when you look through the pages of this season’s brochure and then visit us you will appreciate the changes we have made. The cinema has been converted into our new Studio Theatre, which will add small scale theatre, stand up comedy and fringe performances to our repertoire. The studio will also host our exciting new series performances, broadcast live by satellite from both The Royal Opera House and The South Bank Centre this season alongside a selection of pre-recorded performances from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and Glyndebourne. Our film programme of art house cinema will be supplemented by an ongoing collection of classic films – some old, some not so old; but all rarely shown on a big screen anymore. The Main Stage

Town Hall

A venue like this also has a full community remit, however, and it would be remiss of me not to mention our new sister venues; The Town Hall, The Glasshouse Studio in the Temperate House and South Lodge in The Jephson Gardens at this point, as these venues help us deliver that commitment. I am very thankful to the huge number of community organisations and amateur theatre companies that use all four of our buildings, for their understanding and support during this period of change. We also have to recognise the current climate and we’ve tried to make coming here as affordable as possible through keeping prices as low as we dare, and through our new 20% discount ticket offer on selected shows. We now have a further 18 months to demonstrate that the venue can deliver an important, vibrant and affordable contribution to the well being and cultural life of the district. I hope very much that what we’re doing here appeals to you and that it will attract your support over the next few months. Keep in touch and let us know what you think. Kind regards
